Repeatedly,

Every time I feel a little twist of contempt.

It's Covid, Co as in .co.uk and vid as in video. Isn't it? AIBU?

Does he also say pit-za for pizza? Definitely LTB if so.

StaunchMomma · 27/12/2022 13:05

God, this would drive me INSANE!

I cannot handle it when people mispronounce things at all.

Mine used to say Bri-exit rather than Brexit & I very nearly caved his head in with the Le Creuset.

(I jest, obvs).

Shitfather · 27/12/2022 13:06

Another vote for LTB.

Thingshavebecomeweird · 27/12/2022 13:10

Co. Short for Company.. how do the Covvid team pronounce that?

StaunchMomma · 27/12/2022 13:11

clary · 27/12/2022 10:53

I get the stress wrong and my kids laugh.

WhatsApp I say like what's up instead if stressing the 'Whats'

Hot dog I say like actual dogs that are overheated- stressing the dogs not the hot 🤷‍♀️🤣

My Mum does that with the hot dogs and it makes me howl- my son loses it with her, he's all 'Nanny! It's a HOT dog, not a hot DOG!!!'

My Nan also can't pronounce the name Nicole. Obviously it's NicOLE, but she says NICole & let's just say, our Nicole is not a fan of that 😂

It also does my nut when people pronounce MichELLE MEEEEESHelle.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/12/2022 10:47

I pronounce it 'Covvid'. It's short for 'Coronavirus'. You wouldn't say 'Co - ronavirus' - it's 'Corona' as in the word 'Coronation'.

So if I’m following this correctly, you pronounce Coronavirus as Coronayvirus, with the stress on the ‘nay’?

You are literally the only person I have ever heard pronounce it like that if so Confused

BungleandGeorge · 27/12/2022 13:24

I have a name that is pronounced differently by different accents/ regional variation. It’s still my name, I don’t expect for people to change the way they speak to pronounce it the same as me. That would be very odd…

RambamThankyouMam · 27/12/2022 12:22

A friend of mine calls it covvidd. He also pronounced Ebola as "EBBER-ler". Dickhead.

Are they from a European country by any chance?

GraceAnatomy · 27/12/2022 12:24

My mispronounced bugbear is when people pronounce the letters EX as Eggz.

Brexit - Breggzit
Example - Eggzample
Exit - Eggzit

Wait what? Isn't that just the English pronunciation?

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 27/12/2022 13:33

Hbh17 · 27/12/2022 10:52

He is BU to be mentioning this at all. Don't think I've even used the word for the best part of 2 years, as it's very tedious and now completely irrelevant.

Not if you work in care its not. My employers still insist on testing if you are unwell and we still have to stay off if we have it until we can produce two negative tests on two consecutive days. Those that work directly with residents are still required to wear masks indoors. I currently have covid and have now lost a fortune because they won’t let me work but would if it were just a cold which my symptoms are pretty much the same as.

clearlyclelia · 27/12/2022 13:27

Wait what? Isn't that just the English pronunciation?

Cambridge Dictionaries give
"example" /ɪɡˈzɑːmp(ə)l/
"exit" /ˈeksɪt/
"Brexit" /ˈbrɛksɪt, ˈbrɛɡzɪt/;

Interesting. I had always assumed either the /k/ or the /g/ were fine but only the entry for "Brexit" has the alternative.

KingscoteStaff · 27/12/2022 11:06

DM says Corvid - not sure what crows have got to do with it…

My ex used to say 'corvid' just to wind me up. I stopped listening to him.

Does anyone say the X in "example" like "exit"?
Exx-ample??
I'm honestly gobsmacked
But then your dictionary quote shows it as more like "egg-zample"

kimchifix · 27/12/2022 13:57

I drive past a road sign every day with graffiti that says "CONVID lie" 😂

SmartWatch · 27/12/2022 14:06

I say EX Ample and EX IT and BREX IT - I don't get the G here.

summer788 · 27/12/2022 14:15

ok lol ugliest
I

Bluekerfuffle · 27/12/2022 14:27

Mine says none where non should be used, as in “it’s none-negotiable.”

shinynewapple22 · 27/12/2022 15:27

@Bluekerfuffle surely non and none sound the same ? It's just the spelling ?

And to the posters discussing exit, example etc I would definitely pronounce example as eggsample - it sounds odd with an Ex sound .

AmazonPrim · 27/12/2022 15:29

Pretty sure Michael Gove also pronounced it the same way. It drove me fucking batty

verystablegenius · 27/12/2022 15:33

David Rennie of the Economist says Covvid. Lovely chap but he says it in all his podcasts

SouthwarkSwish · 27/12/2022 15:38

I don't pronounce it covvid...but a very very senior medical professor that I see for a medical condition does...which made me wonder...

amusedbush · 27/12/2022 15:44

SmartWatch · 27/12/2022 12:05

IOS is 'eye os' even though it should be I. O. S for iPhone operating system isn't it? Lots of people call it eye os for short instead of eye oh ess don't they? The Mac guys at work call it eye os.

I'm a learning technologist (and I work closely with IT) and I've never heard it called anything other than eye-oh-ess. I just googled and you're right, apparently either is fine. I absolutely don't ever want to hear it called eye-oss though Grin

RustySprings · 27/12/2022 15:47

I'm going to pronounce him Michael Govv from now on ...

I'm not sure. I thought I did but now I think I don't!

The letter "X" as a sound is generally /ks/ (think about any word with an "X" in. It's more like a /k/ then a /s/ (sex= /seks/)
I know that a /k/ sound often gets changed into a /g/.
I think I say both "exit" and "brexit" with a /k/ but I definitely say "example" with a /g/

I'm.now going to go down a rabbit hole to wonder why!

(I'm a Covid, not a Covvid though!)
