To think I can’t be the only one who fantasises about this scenario?

You wake up one morning and everyone has disappeared. You’re completely alone - you have the whole country to yourself.

Everyone else will come back eventually but for a few weeks, it’s just you.

You can do whatever you want with no consequence. Tear-arse down the M1 at 100mph, have a wander around Buckingham palace … what would you do?

And tell me I’m not the only one who has this daydream?

YABU - it’s just you
YANBU - I have this fantasy too!

Yeah I think about this but terminally- like what if there was a virus that wiped out humanity and I was the only one left because I was flukily immune. What would I do? I mean obviously it’s not gonna happen but sometimes it’s just interesting to think about this stuff. It doesn’t mean I actively want everyone to die.

WunWun · 26/12/2022 23:12

And you've purposefully invented the killing part to fit your weird "sociopath" theory

How would you prefer to phrase the wish that every other living human being disappears and no longer exists?

SugarNspices · 26/12/2022 23:13

Calm down @BloodAndFire it's just a story in their mind they don't want anyone or anyone's kids dead.

There have been plenty of sci fi books and films on this sort of thing. Op I'm sure isn't a psychopath or sociopath, there are much more horrible fantasies people can have.
It's not a personal attack that they are wanting to be rid of you and your loved ones for a few weeks.

WunWun · 26/12/2022 23:13

Jesus Christ, if anyone is getting unnerved that the OP exists you are EXTREMELY sheltered. It's a wonder you make it through the day.

icanwearwhatiwant · 26/12/2022 23:13

Those people who are really struggling here, would you accept that op has the power to safely freeze in position all of humankind, go and have her adventures then unfreeze with no harm done?
I could live more happily with this scenario.

XenoBitch · 26/12/2022 23:14

I like the PP suggestion of looking through Rightmove.

After I ride around shopping centres on a motorcycle, I will browse Rightmove for the most extravagant houses, and go have luxurious baths in all of them. A bath crawl around the country.

Then after normality has resumed, I will create a blog with reviews and photographic evidence of my bubbly adventures, and confuse a lot of people.

Sarahcoggles · 26/12/2022 23:12

I think the reason a couple of us are taking this seriously is because it's actually very very strange to think that there are people among us who genuinely think this would be good. It's a scenario that most people would find terrifying, and learning that others have a completely different view of the world is unnerving, when that view involves their desire to rid the world of everyone but themselves.

Okay so you wouldn’t like it, but for all you know OP’s scenario has just happened to someone else (I mean obviously not, but theoretically).

In theory you could have just “disappeared” for a few weeks and now come back. You wouldn’t know, you’ve been ‘switched off’ somehow … only the person it had happened to is aware.

Now tell me again why you find that so horrifying?!

APotatoFlewAcrossTheRoomLastNightExcuseTheMess · 26/12/2022 23:15

At first I thought as like 🤨 no, I have literally never thought of that before... After reading your replies, I'm liking the cut of your jib! I feel I totally understand the world as you'd be in it (even the irrational way everything will still work etc!) So you've got a fellow sociopath here, the pp better hope we don't get together and go on a mad rampage! 🤭

So long as I know it's only temporary, damn right I'd be making the most of it! I know what I'll be thinking about next time insomnia hits! Although... If everyone has disappeared... What's that noise I can hear... Sounds like footsteps... Heavy breathing... Maybe I've watched too many horror movies/docs to be thinking too much about it in the dead of night 🤣

Yeah, let’s go with this scenario 😂 although they’ll still find something “distressing” about that I bet

There is no reason to, because when she outlined the scenario she clearly said they would be coming back. It's not reality. Obviously. Do you genuinely want me to come up with some sci-fi scenarios as to how it could happen? But you can only think of killing? You just have a poor imagination

Oblomov22 · 26/12/2022 23:16

I'd like it. I'm an Ambivert, absolutely party animal, but love being home alone pottering, for down time. I'd be happy for a week. Bombing up motorways. Having lunch on my own. Then I'd want to see my closest girlfriends for a curry and wine.

I do dream of running away and living in a shack in the middle of nowhere. For a week. Then come back to Dh and ds's, but they hadn't noticed I'd gone because I've time travelled and in this world / their world I've only been gone 10 minutes.
(I assume many others have this fantasy).

PumpkinLumpkin · 26/12/2022 23:16

I'd be shit fucking scared and spooked out my nut. I'm a huge introvert but the thought of this has given me the absolute creeps.

BloodAndFire · 26/12/2022 23:17

namechange5575 · 26/12/2022 23:13

Goodness me, @BloodAndFire Imagination, the ability to mentally place ourselves in another person's shoes, or in another context that we have not experienced, and observe the feelings and thoughts that they evokes, is usually held to be a beautiful creative aspect of humanity, and celebrated.

You may also want to read up on Thought-Action fusion. 'Thought-action fusion is one cognitive distortion common to people with OCD. Thought-action fusion is the belief that thinking about a negative or immoral action is equally as bad as actually committing the action itself. This is sometimes called moral thought-action fusion.'

I am sorry that you find OP's daydreaming so distressing though.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I think you missed the fact that the op sees this as a positive and desirable imaginary scenario, not a negative and immoral one, so it's completely irrelevant here.

She's not expressed this in terms of fear or nightmare or horror, but as something she relishes the thought of.

There is nothing to celebrate, and nothing beautiful , about fantasising about wiping out all other human beings except yourself.

I could live more happily with this scenario.

There's another Arthur C Clarke story where someone can do this - 'All the time in the world' - again, other circumstances make it less than idyllic. I don't think Arthur C Clarke was a sociopath.

StrawberryWater · 26/12/2022 23:17

Probably just go look around some well known tourist destinations in peace. It would be bliss.

Id probably go look round a few houses too.

Honper · 26/12/2022 23:17

I'd love to be able to go everywhere and do everything.

But, surely it would mean less. Like, if there were no people then Buckingham Palace would just be another building. A nice building, but just that.

Plus, I'd be worried about the zombies.

LuluBlakey1 · 26/12/2022 23:18

I often imagine this. I'd love it for 3 or 4 weeks but then I'd be scared about things like power stations, no medical care.
I'm quite capable of surviving on tinned things for that time and bottled water if the water ran out. Plenty of wood for the woodburner.
I wouldn't be scared of being alone- I'd like that. Walking, reading, driving - it would be great.

Ha! But if they froze in position then that would make life very difficult! It would make driving impossible for example. I've been thinking things like trying to identify how long the internet would work if no one was there (not long at all - not a lot of time for dystopian downloads!) and what info I could get from the local library... although if it happened in the middle of the working week and a lot of people were entering otherwise locked doors..... that could be very handy!

WunWun · 26/12/2022 23:18

Hands up here who has ever watched a film.

Oh my god ... I'm so unnerved that Stephen King exists... What I sociopath... How can I live in a world with someone who thinks up stuff like that

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 26/12/2022 23:18

I'm breaking into Liberty's and Selfridges and helping myself to lovely clothes and shoes.

poefaced · 26/12/2022 23:18

Oooh no, too scary. I’d like the world at my feet and do what I want but not to be alone in it.

Kamia · 26/12/2022 23:18

I don't have this fantasy but I fantasise going to an island with no men and children for a little while. There are some men but they are servers and have to wear a cute little uniform. Some can serve me nice drinks and fan me while I lay around with the sun on my face.
It sounds sexist but the men around me can be so lazy and us women carry the brunt of the work and childcare duties so it's a nice dream.

Strangely enough, I don't interpret a fantasy about wanting to wipe out several billion people as being personally directed at me or my family. That would be almost, but not quite, as egomaniacal as the original post.

Wanderingoff · 26/12/2022 23:19

HVe you watched passenger the movie?
