To think I can’t be the only one who fantasises about this scenario?

You wake up one morning and everyone has disappeared. You’re completely alone - you have the whole country to yourself.

Everyone else will come back eventually but for a few weeks, it’s just you.

You can do whatever you want with no consequence. Tear-arse down the M1 at 100mph, have a wander around Buckingham palace … what would you do?

And tell me I’m not the only one who has this daydream?

YABU - it’s just you
YANBU - I have this fantasy too!

So...

  • All the animals are all ok and not trapped in houses/cages and are well fed/also disappeared if they are dependent on humans.
  • There is no cctv
  • I know for sure that everyone is coming back (and exactly when so I don't get caught out) so I'm not even slightly concerned about them.
  • Vital infrastructure is fully automated and not going to crash
  • I'm not going to get stuck or injured
  • Nothing is locked so I can go where I want without damaging anything
  • Things like cinemas and escalators continue to work as normal.

I would be so happy at first.
I'd definitely wear clothes that are really comfy and practical for adventures whether they look good or not. 😁
I'd whack on some music and sing my heart out without anyone sshhh'ing me.
I'd enjoy the frisson of going to out of bounds places and knowing I shouldn't be there but being safe from reprimand. I'd definitely explore some mansions (don't worry I'll take my shoes off)
I'd go to all the places I'd like to go to if they weren't usually so crowded like top tourist spots, but nature based ones like beautiful lakes.
I love the idea from pp of nature gradually getting more bold so I would start to see more and more creatures as I went about my adventures.

I think after a week or so of self indulgence I'd be fully decompressed and energised so ready for a project...
It would be great to try to influence things on everyone's return somehow. So, if the disappeared people blink in and out and are unaware of this, to them it's as though they were just going about their business nothing happened and they have no clue that there was a hole in the space-time continuum that only I had been down... I could potentially create messages that would seem magical and cause governments and the powerful to rethink and most importantly cooperate... If I had the time (now my details are going to trip me up) I could write on all the high buildings a message like 'regional centres of learning for renewable technology, manufacture and infrastructure will protect our future', (it might have to be snapper than that, or be worded as though it came from a God who cares and does exist) I would write a dossier outlining the economic model and resource pipeline (which I would either know or have found on a desk, during my adventures, already written by an amazing professor who was being overlooked or dismissed as 'too dotty'), and leave it on the desks of every world leader including unseen private corporates... to the returning people it would be as though they appeared like magic, it would feature on all the news headlines for weeks, emergency parliament's would be called all over the world and within a year of this magical event all private wealth from the world biggest companies and shallow pointless celebrities would be being ploughed into skilling up the young into being able to design and install and create renewable energy for all businesses and homes, private philanthropists would be awarding grants for people to be able to apply to have the new improvements (sensibly applied and nuanced for each person or business). These centres of learning, planning and manufacture would be located in areas where employment is needed most, the local population would be given all education needed to enable them to engage in the scheme without socio-economic barriers... Within 5 years of The Episode the world would be on a completely different trajectory and opportunity and hope would be available evenly across the globe.

Getting into the pedantic side, the problem with this daydream nowadays is that so much important stuff is on computers. No chance of breaking into MI5 and rifling through a file cabinet of secrets.

I guess you'd want the people to disappear during the daytime so all the buildings would be unlocked, but what about the cars? If they stopped where they were then a lot of roads would be literally impassible. Hmm.

But surely daydreaming (or having fantasies) is all about creating in your mind whatever scenario you want, and so any daydream could include having no obstacles (such as cars in the road) in the way.
I’m assuming the OP’s ‘fantasy’ allows for her to be by herself for a while, but have the ability to go wherever she wants, in the supermarket everything is up and running but there’s no people about, maybe she could fly abroad with the aeroplane piloting itself, again with no one around.

It’s a fantasy and not reality, so anything goes I suppose!

HowVeryLikeSibella · 27/12/2022 11:13

It depends on your personality type and what you fancy. Some people, in some moods, might just like to daydream about the idea of having places to themselves and all obstacles removed. Some people (or the same people in other moods) enjoy getting into the practical but ludicrous details of what they'd actually do, and how they'd overcome obstacles.

Within limits of course. It's key in these daydreams not to contemplate what would happen in chicken and pig farms. It's why I always stick to London, where I can realistically liberate the population of the city farms and stick my fingers in my ears about the rest.

I feel like that if DH goes away for a day or two and take the kids with him (sees him mum). Oh the joy of an empty house, let alone a whole country.

Not so keen on an empty country as I'd be fretting about an alien invasion all the time and where had all the people gone. No, it's just too weird.

AllOfThemWitches · 27/12/2022 12:50

No, I'd have a panic attack!

TimBoothseyes · 27/12/2022 13:30

I'd drive down to a beach, break into a caravan (bottled gas...cooking/hot water sorted), and live in solitary bliss for the duration.

Here's a thought, can you imagine if there was a room with all the things in it that you'd ever lost in your entire life, from money to train tickets to toys?! I lost a toy when I was four, and another really important one when I was five. I'd love to see those again.

I lost a ring I bought with my pocket money from Greenwich market when I was about 4. And one of Ballet Sindy's ballet shoes when I was about 6. I've never got over it. I'd bloody love a room like that. Maybe it's like the room of Erised in Harry Potter - but with lost things instead!

I’m scared of the dark and would be even more so on my own, so could you make this happen in the middle of summer please, OP? 😆

I'd be thieving money. I’d be a multi-millionaire by the end. 🤑

So am I!! And that would also be how I'd spend my time!
Maybe we should arrange our times to coincide so we can team up 🤣

Notthetoothfairy · 27/12/2022 20:13

I would hope to be in/able to get to London if this happens. I would have the most amazing ‘shopping’ spree in all the best department stores (let’s assume I have a car there and can make the CCTV stop working), drink cocktails in all the best places and do things like wandering through the natural history museum and science museum at my leisure.

I would also have a go at making the cinema work (I wonder if the internet, electricity etc would still all work for a while - presumably so) and would see if I could find some pets for company. I would also do a lot more getting back to nature and a lot less paid work!
