To think I can’t be the only one who fantasises about this scenario?

You wake up one morning and everyone has disappeared. You’re completely alone - you have the whole country to yourself.

Everyone else will come back eventually but for a few weeks, it’s just you.

You can do whatever you want with no consequence. Tear-arse down the M1 at 100mph, have a wander around Buckingham palace … what would you do?

And tell me I’m not the only one who has this daydream?

YABU - it’s just you
YANBU - I have this fantasy too!

No, that’s one thing that definitely doesn’t work in my daydream 😂

There's another Arthur C Clarke story where someone can do this - 'All the time in the world' - again, other circumstances make it less than idyllic. I don't think Arthur C Clarke was a sociopath.

As far as I'm aware, Arthur C Clarke didn't frame this as a positive scenario. And he was, you know, actually a proper writer who created and published proper truly fantastical stories, which went somewhat beyond the incredible daydreams of, er, nicking crisps and handbags and looking at someone's living room.

This is what I started wondering with my little alternative 'Bernard's watch' scenario 😅

Wanderingoff · 26/12/2022 23:22

Would I know that there were no scary aliens and zombies around the corner?

Hawkins001 · 26/12/2022 23:23

If it's a couple of weeks, read the files of our various intelligence agencies.

Xtraincome · 26/12/2022 23:23

Yes I think about this. But if it happened I would hope to God it wouldn't be when I am on my period- as every sodding time something fun is planned it times in perfectly with my flow. Only those with heavy periods will get it. But, if I had the chance, period-free I would:

  • go to Calke Abbey and look through every single room and take food with me to eat at the table in the parlour
  • walk around my home town
  • go to London and raid Harrods for the next 10 years of Xmas gifts for family and friends
  • stay in the most plush hotel
  • drive a shit load of fancy cars whilst wearing diamonds I've nicked from Harrods
  • choose a well-stocked mansion in Mayfair and watch Netflix and eat fancy food.

Not the most exciting for some but good for me.

Hawkins001 · 26/12/2022 23:24

Then acquire £250,000

DidYaMeanChapsWilly · 26/12/2022 23:25

Well @BloodAndFire you’ve certainly added a spin to the thread I wasn’t expecting 😂 cheered me up no end!

Im going to add you in to my scenario, now you’re stuck with me for a few weeks … get your seatbelt on! 😂

Oh, so fantasies are only sociopathic if they're not well thought out or the fantasist isn't talented. Gotcha.

gavisconismyfriend · 26/12/2022 23:26

You need to up the fantasy level! Everything keeps working, so no need to worry about lack of power etc, it is just the people who aren’t there/ you don’t see/have to interact with. Nor do you have to work. So essentially you have a few weeks of freedom to do what you like, whilst having all your usual home comforts available, and not having to speak to people.

Am also an introvert……..

Hawkins001 · 26/12/2022 23:26

although I do hope all the animals would be looked after, the reactors would it go critical etc

NoGoodUsernamee · 26/12/2022 23:26

1-2 days sounds great! Def not weeks.

Hawkins001 · 26/12/2022 23:26

*not

namechange5575 · 26/12/2022 23:27

@BloodAndFire do you not understand this as a fantasy? Do you know what a fantasy means in this kind of discussion? Usually it means that an idea has popped into someone's mind and they explore it and they discover some surprises. The narrative goes in ways they hadn't predicted. OP might have noticed how peaceful it is, have some childish glee at opening a box of chocolates in a supermarket, enjoy s break from the responsibilities of work, childcare, demands of small talk. The daydream is pleasurable.

A fantasy isn't something someone wishes to turn into a reality. The points you make, loss of people, hints of death - seem to come from your imagination, not from OPs imagination. I can only imagine you've had significant threat or loss in your life, and so that's where your imagination goes.

Oh no... people's pets!

OP - can pets/farm/zoo animals be frozen in time so they are ok?

OhChristmasTreeOhChristmasTreeFaLaLa · 26/12/2022 23:27

It'd be my worst nightmare, I'd be really lonely and my husband does all the cooking so I'd be hungry too 🤣. I need other people, I feel jumpy downstairs at night on my own too, I'd never cope alone. I sound about 5, I'm actually late 30s with 3 young children 🤣 I just wouldn't last long alone. Surprisingly I travelled allover the world alone in my 20s, I've clearly turned into a needy old bore in my old age 😆.

Chinnegan · 26/12/2022 23:27

I totally get what you mean OP I often imagine these scenarios as I read a lot of sci fi. I hope there would still be wildlife which would get braver over the few weeks so I could see herds of deer wandering through town and things like that. I get too anxious of getting attacked to go hiking and camping on my own so I'd just immerse myself in nature for a few week.

SuckItNietzsche · 26/12/2022 23:28

Sarahcoggles · 26/12/2022 23:06

It actually unnerves me that there are people walking around who want me to disappear. Not because they don't like me - they don't even know me - but just because I occupy space and take up oxygen, and they want it all for themselves. They want my kids to disappear too. And their own kids. It's just too weird to get my head around.

Good Lord. She doesn't WANT you to, she's thinking about "What if?" You know, as writers, artists and philosophers have been doing since the dawn of time as they try to make sense of the human condition.

Hawkins001 · 26/12/2022 23:28

Although on the flip side, could always go nuclear, and go to the main control for our nukes, and launch them all, as I'm guessing in theory, other countries would have some that would be automatically launched etc.

XenoBitch · 26/12/2022 23:27

Yeah this is the bit I’m stuck on, I’d want my dog with me but I’d need to know the other animals were all ok

Sometimes I steal a horse and ride across England on it … but where does it come from? Because if one horse is available, where are the other horses? I can’t look after them all … I don’t even know how to look after horses … (and this is usually the point I start to stress myself out with the details 😂)

Insaneinthemembraneee · 26/12/2022 23:31

I love daydreaming about this when I first wake up.
I'd have a dog for company 😂 that's all I'd need.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 26/12/2022 22:56

I'd be at New Scotland Yard rummaging through the 'closed for 30 years' /secret files.

I know at least one name on that list.

I'd wander round Windsor Castle then I'd go to MI5 and look through all of their files too.

Then, when everyone came back, I'd drip feed my 'knowledge' onto MN!

These are genius ideas! That would be me too. It would be fascinating.

And then I'd snoop around all the royal palaces, No 10, chequers etc.

and a trip to Harrod's to play dress up in designer shoes. Grin

Christinatherabbit · 26/12/2022 23:31

No!!! Just the thought makes me freak out. I would hate it 😫
