You wake up one morning and everyone has disappeared. You’re completely alone - you have the whole country to yourself.

Everyone else will come back eventually but for a few weeks, it’s just you.

You can do whatever you want with no consequence. Tear-arse down the M1 at 100mph, have a wander around Buckingham palace … what would you do?

And tell me I’m not the only one who has this daydream?

I read Z for Zachariah 30 years ago as a teenager and this idea stuck... which seems quite strange in the context of the rest of the book! Anyway I have spent hundreds of hours during the last three decades thinking about this idea... being the only one left. It is more an exercise in problem solving for me and I don't really have a romantic idea of it - but I do think I would cope remarkedly well (until I went mad of course!). There is countless things you need to think about! I didn't really keep with the "only for a few weeks" ending you did OP. maybe that would lend different ideas and less problems!

There was a children's television series in the 1960s, 'The Magic Boomerang'. When a boy threw his boomerang, time stopped until it came back. I thought that was a good idea. He had the freedom of being uninterrupted but not the horror of everyone disappearing.

I think the 'fantasy' they have posted is sociopathic and disturbing.

The thought makes me feel quite weird. A bit like when I think too hard about the ocean floor or space.

Can I clarify a few things? Do I know from the start that everyone is coming back? Do I really need tinned stuff, or can the electricity just magically work? And the internet? I think I’d struggle if I couldn’t google things…

I think I watched sci fi series (can't remember what it was called) It was where everyone was paused except this young couple who I think couldn't be together in RL and they could unpause when they were ready to go back to normal life. They lasted a week together 😂 It would be cool if you could do that I think as long as the play button didn't break!

'Not having ID checked at the supermarket' doesn't really seem a worthwhile reason to fantasise about eradicating all humans except myself, tbh.

I agree with @BloodAndFire , it's such a strange and disturbing fantasy. I know it's meant to be light hearted but it sounds pathological.

I experienced this, about 18yrs ago i was living in birmingham, when England made it some final in some football match, maybe world cup. I went out cycling thinking it'll be much quieter on roads, didn't expect it to be completely deserted. For the next 90 minutes I saw not one car nor one person outside and my route is on some busy A roads. It was so bizarre! I ended up just weaving across the road like a little kid cos I could 😆, cycling right in the middle, doing all sorts lol

Then just as I came back near end of my ride suddenly cars appeared there were people on the streets again ....the mach had ended lol

But for those 90 mins I experienced what it would of been like if their was suddenly no people around

Do we know at the time they are coming back in a few weeks? If so then I would stock yp some food and books and have a nice relaxing time, but if I didn't know I might be devastated.

I’ve imagined the scenario where all electric and gas still works and petrol is freely available in the pumps … I can’t make it make sense but that would be the preferable option

I don't think it's going to happen. I think it's a really unpleasant and disturbed fantasy, and you seem (wilfully?) blind to it.
