From the guardian:Rishi Sunak has been criticised over an awkward exchange with a homeless person while volunteering at a soup kitchen in front of television cameras.

The prime minister visited a shelter on Friday, where after a brief exchange he asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.

The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

...I have no words.

Stop repeating this. It is untrue.

The actual transcript:

Homeless man "I'm interested in business"
Rishi "Oh yeah, what kind of business?"
Homeless man "Finance, it's good for the city of London"
Rishi "Absolutely right. I used to work in finance"

Don't believe the Labour trolls on here.

Wtf is wrong with you @starfro

Just because you’re homeless it doesn’t mean you don’t have aspirations. I remember John Bird doing an interview saying he was sure, that if the big issue gave people a livelihood, then they would get off the streets. He said he was shocked to discover the complexity of homelessness- the range of reasons for it and obstacles to moving away from it… maybe it was ok to ask about work? I don’t know…

I don't like seeing people trying to whip up hatred for politicians of any creed.

I'm a Lib Dem, but just hate lying when it involves anyone. It's disgusting.

Stopclutchingpearls · 24/12/2022 20:35

This country is free falling to be a shit hole and what I can’t fathom is that there are actual people on this post still willing to say they back the tories after the shit show of the last twelve years! Nothing works any more I would be very ashamed if I had voted tory

Her manager at Tory-bot HQ is hassling her to get out there and obfuscate the issue even harder than she is already?

The DM and right-wing hate Rishi, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I really hope it's not racism.

Iam4eels · 24/12/2022 20:40

I think its more the fact he's a completely out of touch twat rather than racism.

True - but if I was homeless, hungry and getting food at a soup kitchen, and the PM asked me if I worked for a business, I might find it hard to say how I really felt.

"No, I'm homeless" was quite restrained. It could have been a lot worse

NewBootsAndRanty · 24/12/2022 20:40

What footage source would you prefer @starfro ?
The Guardian? The BBC? They can't all be fake.

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 24/12/2022 20:41

Out of touch from the rest of the UK, I hate the Tories with every inch of me.

Have you seen the video?

Yes.

And, no, someone who is homeless is very unlikely to have a business. Or to work in a business

They may have had a business in the past (even if only a market stall/window cleaning business) - and lost their business through bankruptcy or mental health problems etc.

Who is the first person in the conversation to mention the word "finance"?

If you were homeless, hungry and at a soup kitchen, and the Prime Minister asked you if you "worked for a business", what would you say?

I think Sunak was very lucky. He could have had a major PR disaster.

@NewBootsAndRanty It is not true. The Conservative supporters are at this point just lying about what was said.

Sunak asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.
The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

Oh dear. You have repeatedly been caught lying on the royal threads and now you are doing it on the politics thread. What on earth is the matter with you?

FuckFuckGo · 24/12/2022 20:46

I’m with you @starfro. The poster arguing with you keeps omitting the part where the man says he’s interested in finance. And I’m not convinced he said ‘that’s the business’. I listened to it several times and the first part of that sentence was inaudible.

I loathe the Tories and have no fondness for Sunak, but just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean that everything he says or does is automatically outrageous.

I feel for the bloke in the video most of all, having this exchange circulated and shared and pored over by millions of people, having his situation of homelessness exploited for the purpose of having a go at Sunak.

I hope all of those outraged out it to good use and consider donating to a homeless charity off the back of this instead of gnashing their teeth about the Tories.

There were several other reports on TV around homelessness and rough sleeping yesterday, including one on the excellent Dynamic Pathway to Independence scheme in Watford, which to give them some credit, the government is funding through 2025.

There was also a camera crew following outreach workers who were checking on the welfare of rough sleepers in London. The shocking fact they reported was that one in four of these had jobs, and many did not have any stereotypical drug or mental health problems. The biggest problem is simply the cost of somewhere to live.

Exactly! I'm not voting for the Tories, although I do prefer Rishi to Truss/Boris.

I nearly shared the video with my friends, but bothered to watch it first and it didn't match the headlines.

I hate this modern "gotcha" journalism. Concentrate on policies FFS!
