From the guardian:Rishi Sunak has been criticised over an awkward exchange with a homeless person while volunteering at a soup kitchen in front of television cameras.

The prime minister visited a shelter on Friday, where after a brief exchange he asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.

The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

...I have no words.

Allegra and Rishi must have blooper tallies to compare.

They unzip his mouth on one occasion as a festive treat, then this happens.

Typical out of touch, dead behind the eyes, self absorbed Tory bastard.

Hmmm, now that you mention it, who am I to disagree 😁😁

Actually I was ready to mock, no love for the Tories here but the bloke said he was interested in finance and why assume someone will always be homeless and not make any moves forward. I work in the third sector and that sounded like an attempt at not patronising someone tbh from someone out of his comfort zone.

This. Why patronise someone? Why not ask for aims? Why assume Homeless is all you are and will evermore be?

Good for Sunak I say.

antelopevalley · 24/12/2022 19:44

Xmas Grin So many Tory supporters on here. Listen to it, Sunak was not asking him about his wishes to make his life better, he was simply fucking clueless and talked to him like a junior work colleague.

I suspect context is everything and the Guardian will have out their own spin on it (and I'm very left leaning as a general rule). I don't think it hurts for the PM to tell the man it could be possible if that's what he wants.

The video is online so it doesn't matter what spin a media site puts on it. People can make their own mind up.

Unifolorn · 24/12/2022 19:52

He spoke to him like a regular person. I've met a lot of people with no fixed abode through work and most of them often comment one of the good things about being in hospital is that they're spoken to as people rather than spoken down to condescendingly or pityed. Just because someone is homeless now it doesn't mean they always have been and it doesn't mean they don't have skills, talent and ambition still. Of course survival is number one, and words alone are empty but curious what everyone else thinks should be said to homeless people?

antelopevalley · 24/12/2022 19:56

Watch the video yourself online. Don't believe the Tory supporter's spin.

Iam4eels
His follow up was to ask the man if he had any plans for the weekend

He said 'What's your plan (not plans) - which has a different emphasis.

AnonWeeMouse
Dean - 'Are you going to sort the economy out?'
Rishi - 'That is exactly what I'm trying to do.'
Dean - 'That's the business.'

Sky think he said 'best for business'

antelopevalley · 24/12/2022 19:59

@Unifolorn I have been officially homeless. Of no fixed abode is a strange phrase to use. Are you a police person?
He was not of no fixed abode, he was sleeping on the streets and wanted to get into temporary accommodation where he would still be officially homeless.

Clavinova · 24/12/2022 20:00

He spoke to him like a regular person

This.

antelopevalley · 24/12/2022 20:02

He did not!!
Speaking to someone as a regular person means recognising who you are talking to.
Sunak spoke to him like a junior colleague he met at the water cooler.
Any plans for the weekend?

antelopevalley · 24/12/2022 20:03

@Clavinova Do you have a klaxon set up so as soon as anyone criticises the Conservative party you know you have to get online?

starfro · 24/12/2022 20:04

The homeless man said that he wanted to get into a business like finance, to which Rishi replied "oh, I used to do that".

Normal conversation. We know that if it had been a Labour person they'd have spoken down to this man and treated him as sub-human.

Where in the transcript is that bit?

antelopevalley · 24/12/2022 20:08

@NewBootsAndRanty It is not true. The Conservative supporters are at this point just lying about what was said.

Sunak asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.
The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

Watch the video.

The homeless guy brings up the finance industry before Rishi does.

NewBootsAndRanty · 24/12/2022 20:10

I know @antelopevalley
I'm just agog at the brass neck.

Of course he/she does. He/She’s literally paid to come on here with whataboutary/ and cut and paste nonsense in support of the Tory party.

Borborygmus · 24/12/2022 20:11

I'm mystified by the fuss over this. I'm not a fan of Sunak, but this was a perfectly normal convesation.

antelopevalley · 24/12/2022 20:12

@NewBootsAndRanty Maybe they took lessons from Boris Johnson? Just openly lie and to hell with it.

A comment without foundation of course.
