While volunteering at a soup kitchen, Rishi Sunak asked a homeless man if 'he would like to get into the finance industry '

From the guardian:Rishi Sunak has been criticised over an awkward exchange with a homeless person while volunteering at a soup kitchen in front of television cameras.

The prime minister visited a shelter on Friday, where after a brief exchange he asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.

The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

...I have no words.

The homeless man used to work in finance but left when he became homeless. They had a full conversation that ended with Rishi giving him a business card and asking him to give him a call when he’s ready. My sister was there and saw it all.

My mum was there and says your sister is lying
Or maybe I’m making it up

God he is a prat. And lives on another planet.

We could have a society that feeds and houses people. We could have a society that works towards better cleaner energy provision, better health outcomes, secure food supplies, for all the people currently here and support the establishment of similar societies for others abroad. We could even have one that works towards space travel and exploration for our species! Instead we have Sunak from international wealth unable to think of anything other than generating more imaginary wealth out of electronic games to make more luxury yachts, and other circuses like celebrity gossip.

I don't think it hurts for the PM to tell the man it could be possible if that's what he wants.

I'm not too knowledgable about the finer points of it but I don't think you can 'want' yourself out of poverty. I dunno but I reckon when working people are having to use food banks, and footballers are having to get involved in battling for kids to get meals and people in otherwise 'normal' jobs are choosing between eating or heating then I just think the issue goes far deeper than just 'working a bit harder'.

is working a bit harder not a standard MNer response to being in poverty.

In reality no one in this country should be using a foodbank or a homeless shelter , and political advisers must be having a laugh thinking these places are great for a photo-op.

GlumShoe · 24/12/2022 18:02

Typical out of touch, dead behind the eyes, self absorbed Tory bastard.

Florenz · 24/12/2022 18:07

Politicians never really come across well when dealing with normal people.

loislovesstewie · 24/12/2022 18:07

I assume that the man concerned is actually street homeless? If so, he's really got a very big mountain to climb before he would be able to resume a profession. I'm saying that from the experience of working as a homeless officer for donkeys years.

I don't think this is so awful actually. I volunteer at a homeless drop in centre in a City. Some of the guys have jobs.
I also have a cousin who worked for Trussell Trust who had some great stories of businesses in London who encouraged their staff to give some time regularly to Foodbank and there was a homeless guy who had been offered a job earning a top salary as he had good previous experience.
Some homeless people are just in a place they need lifting out of with the right support and opportunities.

CriticalAlert · 24/12/2022 18:12

Perhaps Rishi will get the guy a job on £200 pa doing fa. It's beyond embarrassing. This Tory government are foul and couldn't care less about anything apart from getting rich and helping their mates get rich.

AnonWeeMouse · 24/12/2022 18:28

According to the Metro:
Reports vary, but according to the Sunday Times’ Rich List for 2022, the net worth of Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, is estimated to be in the region of £730 million.

This makes him richer than King Charles III, who is worth an estimated £600 million.

And Regarding Trussell Trust
Expenditure in 2020-21 was £18.72m

That means, realistically, Sunak and Murtys networth is enough to run the entire Trussell trust for about 35-40 years..

Let that sink on for just a second.

Those 2 people have enough cash that they could help Millions upon Millions of families for 40 years.

There isn't a cost of living crisis, there's a hoarding of wealth crisis.

And yet Sunak has the cheek to dish out a few eggs to the homeless for a photo op? Suppose it beats actually doing something.

Other outlets are available

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11571711/Rishi-Sunak-asks-homeless-man-shelter-works-business.html

It also references the incident when he filled up someone elses car and had an issue with scanning his can of coke when he presented his card to the scanning machine

The comments are brutal

Cosplaying as an ordinary person. Trouble is that he has no idea how ordinary people live.

Im no fan of Sunak, but why the assumption on here that a homeless man cant be in the finance industry?

I've worked in many homeless shelters, and have known homeless people in hospitality, legal work, business, and justice, to name but a few.

Certainly not impossible for a homeless man to be working in finance, or to get a job in finance

Last time I worked in a finance based job I had to pass a credit check as part of identity and fraud checks.

Iam4eels · 24/12/2022 18:33

Difficult to pass a credit check with no address.

Don’t know why anyone is surprised , Rishi has more wealth with his wife than the Royal family ffs. He said when young on a video that he didn’t know anyone from the working class, and here’s the kicker there are working class folks amongst us that think these Elton educated or in his case Winchester are like us really ffs .
They are so far removed pissed me off when folks thought how down to earth boris was forgetting that he was in the Bullingdon club and abused working class people.

TintinHadToBeMale · 24/12/2022 18:40

We had Farage too.

cakeorwine · 24/12/2022 18:40

Engage brain before speaking.

The guy never asked about wanting to get a job in business. I don't even think he was interested in talking about business. He just said "that's the business".

So many more things he could have talked about after the guy mentioned the economy.

EddyF · 24/12/2022 18:41

All I could concentrate on was that he did not have a mask on(nothing to do with covid). I hate services that speak over my food. All that spit and hot breath air getting into the food. That’s why I stopped eating at Subways. Asking what toppings I want without a mask/hair net. It’s disgusting.

RS is just an awkward man; it feels extremely fake when he’s talking to the public etc. He has no charm whatsoever. Just wooden.

I can't stand the people who are in a position to make the structural changes that would render charity redundant doing stupid charity stunts.

Why on Earth would you make up such a stupid lie? We can all see the footage and see that no such thing happened. The guy doesn’t work in finance, Rishi didn’t give him his card (do you seriously think the PM hands out business cards for people unaware of who he is and where his office is?)

Well if the current government continue like this, even more working people will be homeless soon...yippee

Happygirl79 · 24/12/2022 19:23

So out of touch with the reality of people's struggles to survive under a Conservative government

wackamole · 24/12/2022 19:23

This would be fine, IF the PM was going to move this type of discussion onto some kind of real world practical level.

Let's say this particular individual IS willing to work in finance and has the basic ability and work ethic, with some support, to succeed in establishing a career. How about some kind of program - maybe similar in some ways to post-career-break "returneeships" where potential employers indicate that they are open to hiring and (re)training currently homeless people? Get them prepared for common situations like the applicant having no physical address, not having worked in some time, having a patchy/gig/off-the-books work history, not having clothing or footwear to wear to an interview, not having place to take a shower, not having a quiet/private place to participate in a telephone/video interview, not having a mobile or regular phone number or computer/internet access, not having anywhere to receive post, not having transportation to get to an interview or office, not having a safe place to keep papers or equipment, not having references, not having a file cabinet full of old offer letters/contracts/tax returns, etc, not having government-issued ID, having a history of substance abuse and/or MH issues, etc. etc....

Let government ministers - oh hell, ANY MPs - who've worked in finance or hold interest or stocks in financial companies or sit on boards or have influence get those companies officially and publicly committed to reach out to homeless people and encourage them to apply for jobs that pay immediately and have on the job training, where they know they won't be brushed aside or shamed for not fitting the corporate mould or not having the kind of history usually required to even get the resume looked at.

That would be a start.

Unifolorn · 24/12/2022 19:27

He was serving food, he isn't going to stand and chat for hours, I expect he spoke to many people but of course the headliner was something that made him look stupid. I am not a fan of his, but cripes. I do hope he now reaches out though.
