From the guardian:Rishi Sunak has been criticised over an awkward exchange with a homeless person while volunteering at a soup kitchen in front of television cameras.

The prime minister visited a shelter on Friday, where after a brief exchange he asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.

The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

...I have no words.

It was clumsy and makes him look utterly clueless. As an aside, over a million people didn't receive their £67 December energy cost vouchers because of postal strikes and the offices were already closed yesterday so you couldn't do a thing about it. Something they could have just texted or emailed the barcode for, people are now spending Christmas without. It's obscene having such clueless leaders when a substantial amount of people who aren't homeless won't have electric at Christmas while Rishi is over indulging on the trappings of a billionaire lifestyle. Anyone who votes Tory again after this shower wants their heads looked at.

The homeless man used to work in finance but left when he became homeless. They had a full conversation that ended with Rishi giving him a business card and asking him to give him a call when he’s ready. My sister was there and saw it all.

NewBootsAndRanty · 24/12/2022 16:13

@Fadedpicture if you want to see the context, it's all available to watch in the video in the article.

RunLolaRun102 · 24/12/2022 16:13

Or claimed he worked there any way

Iam4eels · 24/12/2022 16:13

He literally asked "do you work in business?" No spin needed, it was cringy enough on its own.

His follow up was to ask the man if he had any plans for the weekend.

Was she, aye?

What's wrong with encouraging people to better themselves? Lifting oneself out poverty has to start somewhere. Where is Kier Starmer? Is he helping at a food kitchen? Or Is he too busy supporting Wee Jimmy cranky in destroying the rights of natal females?

jetadore · 24/12/2022 16:16

Well done Rishi, keep spreading the message, if everyone took your advice and just “got into finance” instead of expecting handouts then they wouldn’t be homeless would they?

Mycatsgoldtooth · 24/12/2022 16:18

Beyond awful

Because he wasn't encouraging him to better himself, he was asking a tone-deaf question because he clearly had no idea about the lives of the service users he was there to pretend to help.

Kier Starmer isn't the PM, Rishi Sunak is which is why this is a thread about him.

Comedycook · 24/12/2022 16:22

I don't understand why he asked if a man visiting a homeless kitchen worked in business? Unless the Tories now believe that even those working in successful careers should be too poor to afford food? Is this their manifesto? To create a country where even those employed need charity to survive?

bakewellbride · 24/12/2022 16:22

Shocking. Cringe-worthy.

Iam4eels · 24/12/2022 16:22

I wonder how long it'll be until the Tory-bots try to claim Dean was a paid actor. I've seen the "he used to be in finance and Rishi gave him a business card, my sister/friend/neighbour/cat was there" story almost word for word elsewhere by several different people so I guess the twisting of the truth is already starting.

Benmac · 24/12/2022 16:54

I said you were unreasonable only because I am not sure why this would suprise you about Sunak. He has no life experience with anyone other than privileged people. He cannot pretend.
Bojo would have been " Hail fellow, well met" but everyone would know he was acting.

Roselilly36 · 24/12/2022 16:56

Just shows what an idiot he is.

cakeorwine · 24/12/2022 16:58

I wonder if Sunak wonders what events leads someone to become homeless?

He knew he was being filmed. I wonder what advice he was given about how to interact and "the optics".

cakeorwine · 24/12/2022 17:00

According to the Daily Mail, this was the conversation

Dean - 'Are you going to sort the economy out?'
Rishi - 'That is exactly what I'm trying to do.'
Dean - 'That's the business.'
Rishi - 'Do you work in business? Do you want some fruit?'
Dean - 'No I'm homeless. I'm actually a homeless person. But I am interested in business.
Rishi - 'What kind of business?'
Dean - 'I like finance, it's good for the city and em when finance and stuff is doing well we all do well in London.'
Rishi - 'Yeah that's absolutely right. So I used to work in finance.'
Dean - 'Yeah I heard, ex-investment banker.'
Rishi - 'Well I did lots of different things but yeah you're right. But the good thing now is if you look at all the jobs in finance, the majority of them are outside London now. Is that something you would like to get into?'
Dean - 'Yeah I wouldn't mind. But, I don't know, I'd like to get through Christmas first.'
Rishi -
'What's your plan, what are you doing this weekend?'
Dean - 'No idea. I'm hoping that the St Mungo's can help me get into some temporary accommodation so I'm not on the street.'

Unifolorn · 24/12/2022 17:01

Amazing how many people seem to have missed the start of the conversation which adds context. Quelle surprise.

CoffeeBoy · 24/12/2022 17:01

Poor old Rishi. Obviously his minions didn’t tell him where he was going and the poor love thought he was dishing up in the Price Waterhouse Cooper staff canteen. Helping out due to staff shortages. 🤷‍♀️

AnonWeeMouse · 24/12/2022 17:02

Op may not have words...

I have several that describes both Sunak the Tories and their supporters and voters.

The most placid and non offensive one would be calling them a bunch of NIMBY obsessives.
It gets worse from there.

Wanderingoff · 24/12/2022 17:02

I think the what are you doing this weekend comment is far worse tbh

cakeorwine · 24/12/2022 17:04

You can hear the intonations in the interaction

Rishi heard him say "that's the business"
Rishi then says "Do you work in business?"
And Dean says "No, I'm homeless"

I think Sunak forgot that he was in a homeless setting.

Greenfairydust · 24/12/2022 17:05

This cheap PR stunt backfired spectacularly.

It showed how out of touch and privileged these useless politicians are.

I cannot wait to se the back of the Tories.

Video is here

It's the intonation when the guy says "No, I'm homeless after he says do you work in business"

AnonWeeMouse · 24/12/2022 17:06

Dean - 'Are you going to sort the economy out?'
Rishi - 'That is exactly what I'm trying to do.'
Dean - 'That's the business.'
Rishi - 'Do you work in business? Do you want some fruit?'
Dean - 'No I'm homeless. I'm actually a homeless person. But I am interested in business.

Rishi should have then said something like-
"Homelessness is a big issue that were also working on. What do you think would help with that?"
