While volunteering at a soup kitchen, Rishi Sunak asked a homeless man if 'he would like to get into the finance industry '

From the guardian:Rishi Sunak has been criticised over an awkward exchange with a homeless person while volunteering at a soup kitchen in front of television cameras.

The prime minister visited a shelter on Friday, where after a brief exchange he asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.

The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

...I have no words.

The actual transcript:

Homeless man "I'm interested in business"
Rishi "Oh yeah, what kind of business?"
Homeless man "Finance, it's good for the city of London"
Rishi "Absolutely right. I used to work in finance"

Don't believe the Labour trolls on here.

The transcript doesn't read that the homeless man said that he wanted to get into a business like finance, to which Rishi replied "oh, I used to do that". That's your spin.

@Borborygmus This is a normal conversation to you??

Sunak asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.
The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

The man mentioned he was interested in business and finance prior to Sunak discussing his background in the finance industry. I can only assume you haven't watched the video.

Do you have a klaxon set up so as soon as anyone criticises the Conservative party you know you have to get online?

No - do you have one for the Labour Party?

Any plans for the weekend?

Sunak said 'What's your plan ...?' Perfectly sensible question. Why are you assuming the homeless man hasn't been offered Christmas lunch somewhere, even if it's in a community centre/church hall?

He spoke to him like a regular person

This.

"That's the business"

(So yes, that means, good you are sorting out the economy"

"Do you have, do you work in business, Do you want fruit?"

"No, I'm homeless"

Did you hear the tone in the comment "No, I'm homeless"

Dean - 'Are you going to sort the economy out?'
Rishi - 'That is exactly what I'm trying to do.'
Dean - 'That's the business.'
Rishi - 'Do you work in business? Do you want some fruit?'
Dean - 'No I'm homeless. I'm actually a homeless person. But I am interested in business.
Rishi - 'What kind of business?'
Dean - 'I like finance, it's good for the city and em when finance and stuff is doing well we all do well in London.'
Rishi - 'Yeah that's absolutely right. So I used to work in finance.'
Dean - 'Yeah I heard, ex-investment banker.'
Rishi - 'Well I did lots of different things but yeah you're right. But the good thing now is if you look at all the jobs in finance, the majority of them are outside London now. Is that something you would like to get into?'
Dean - 'Yeah I wouldn't mind. But, I don't know, I'd like to get through Christmas first.'
Rishi -
'What's your plan, what are you doing this weekend?'
Dean - 'No idea. I'm hoping that the St Mungo's can help me get into some temporary accommodation so I'm not on the street.'

I'm honestly baffled as to why anyone would have any reason to say anything supportive of the Tories at this stage. Surely most people can see that this government has totally run out of steam. Every party has a cycle and it's painfully obvious that the Tories are at the end of theirs.

No, he doesn't

I would hardly call that talking about his ambitions to work in finance. It's Sunak who has suddenly started talking about business and then finance jobs outside London.

According to whom? Dean mentioned something about law associations - I can't see that in your transcript.

My thoughts exactly.

I'd have to see the recording. It is hard to know if he was just awkward but with good motives. Perhaps he was intending to try to assist some of the people he meets in shelters to get a job in the finance industry: perhaps one of his wife's companies.

I had an evening job in my twenties making telesales calls for a company which sold life insurance. I didn't have experience in that field, but I was mentored and told how to read a script and to ask open questions. It was quite useful experience and I think the financial services industry has longevity and is here to stay..

Anyone in this country is free to stand as an MP. Why are more normal people not doing it?! That is the question we need to ask ourselves foremost.

The homeless man used to work in finance but left when he became homeless. They had a full conversation that ended with Rishi giving him a business card and asking him to give him a call when he’s ready. My sister was there and saw it all.

That puts a different perspective on it!

Have you seen the video?

In fact, the first thing he says is "Hungry", in response to Sunak's question about how he is.

And, no, someone who is homeless is very unlikely to have a business. Or to work in a business.

Didn't the guy mention being interested in finance? I can't make out that bit of the convo.

I thought he'd asked the pm if he was going to sort out the country's finances. Then the pm either misheard or sent the conversation off down that really wierd path.
Not that declaring the soup kitchen to be a lovely place wasn't already wierd.

This is from the Daily Mail

Are you suggesting the Daily Mail has misinterpreted what Sunak has said?

Surely not?

He volunteered, which is more than I did. So no criticism. Yes, a photo opportunity but it's highlighted the work of volunteers and homelessness. Hopefully he will do something about it.

Hands up who was unaware about the existence of homelessness before Rishi did this?

Aside from Rishi, of course.
