While volunteering at a soup kitchen, Rishi Sunak asked a homeless man if 'he would like to get into the finance industry '

From the guardian:Rishi Sunak has been criticised over an awkward exchange with a homeless person while volunteering at a soup kitchen in front of television cameras.

The prime minister visited a shelter on Friday, where after a brief exchange he asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless. Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.

The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

...I have no words.

Hmm, he's awkward and not good at social chit chats and random conversations, it seems. Nothing wrong with that but not a great trait for a PM.

I'm not sure how the whole conversation went but perhaps he wants to help the man get a foot in the door somehow?

cakeorwine · 24/12/2022 17:11

He said "Do you have (and then he stops himself) , do you work in business?"

That's where it went wrong. He just heard the word business. After Dean said "that's the business"

If he was going to have a filmed conversation, there are better ways to do it.

Another load of crap from a Guardian reporter.

He should have said "do you have an interest in business?"

Other outlets are available

It also references the incident when he filled up someone elses car and had an issue with scanning his can of coke when he presented his card to the scanning machine

The comments are brutal

I don’t think he understands how to communicate with people earning under £90k pa

He should have said "do you have an interest in business?"

I think the word "business" in that conversation is just Dean saying "that's a good thing to do".

cakeorwine · 24/12/2022 17:20

Could have been worse though

"What brings you here today?"

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/12/2022 17:21

It was all terrible yet who in his team honestly thought he'd manage to pull it off!?? He's a billionaire serving food in soup kitchen! It's not a lovely place - it shouldn't even exist!

This. Food banks, soup kitchens and homelessness is becoming normal and that's on Sunak and his government. He hasn't got a fucking clue about the real world.

He's so rich, I imagine someone on 90k is an absolute peasant to him.

oreste · 24/12/2022 17:23

Within the context, It wasn't really appropriate to talk about much beyond the food on the plate. Nobody wants a long conversation over a plate of food, especially if they are starving and want to get on with eating it. Perhaps make a humorous comment. He is barely allowed to talk to the public but every time he is allowed, this happens.

I suspect context is everything and the Guardian will have out their own spin on it (and I'm very left leaning as a general rule). I don't think it hurts for the PM to tell the man it could be possible if that's what he wants.

How the hell could it be a possibility for the man at present?

What's wrong with encouraging people to better themselves? Lifting oneself out poverty has to start somewhere. Where is Kier Starmer? Is he helping at a food kitchen? Or Is he too busy supporting Wee Jimmy cranky in destroying the rights of natal females?

Because people who are homeless aren't in that situation because of a lack of encouragement. They can't be encouraged out of homelessness into finance! They need concrete help.

PenanceAdair · 24/12/2022 17:28

I also wonder what's the point of extremely rich people volunteering at a soup kitchen - is it to say 'hey look we can serve food, smile and speak to poor people'? It's bizarre.

I agree with pp, it shouldn't even exist and this is what these extremely rich people should be donating to/trying to eradicate.

Murdoch1949 · 24/12/2022 17:35

Sunak actually asked him if he was working in the finance industry. Guy replied, no, I'm homeless. Sunak is so out of touch, socially inept and just a fool. Remember he didn't know how to tap his card to pay for an item in a photo opp.

cakeorwine · 24/12/2022 17:38

I almost think he realised he his mistake when he quickly said, "Do you want some fruit"

The homeless man used to work in finance but left when he became homeless. They had a full conversation that ended with Rishi giving him a business card and asking him to give him a call when he’s ready. My sister was there and saw it all.

Cool story bro.

MissWired · 24/12/2022 17:43

He used to work for Goldman Sachs. Google that name sometime along with the word "corruption" and feast your eyes.

He's the banksters man, and shallow as a puddle to boot.

Nimbostratus100 · 24/12/2022 17:46

Im no fan of Sunak, but why the assumption on here that a homeless man cant be in the finance industry?

I've worked in many homeless shelters, and have known homeless people in hospitality, legal work, business, and justice, to name but a few.

Certainly not impossible for a homeless man to be working in finance, or to get a job in finance

loislovesstewie · 24/12/2022 17:54

Having some direct experience of MPs, I can say that the majority don't have a clue about how ordinary people live. I can't say much as it would be outing but I have had some very weird conversations where they can't get their heads around the lives of the have not. It pervades all parties.

Dayil · 24/12/2022 17:56

So what should he have said- that’s not going to happen then or something similar? Many people have hit rock bottom some people manage to move back up.

I’m no Guardian reader but I have watched the footage and it’s pretty awful.
The thing that really annoys me about Sunak is he acts like an over privileged knob but he wasn’t born into that. He came from an aspirational Mc background but going to Winchester or wherever, I imagine he wasn’t white, rich or posh enough and overcompensated to fit in so now he thinks he’s one of them - he’s not.
Hes rich enough but he’s still brown and his family haven’t been landowners for generations so he will never really fit in with Rees Mogg, Johnson et al.

At which point did the guy say he even wanted to work in finance?

Has anyone really suggested this?
