Worst Wedding Reception Ever?

TheShellBeach · 23/12/2022 14:46

I am still trying to get my head round this one.

It was a friend's wedding last week and they happy couple invited twelve people to their reception.

After the ceremony (which was lovely) we went back to the couple's house.

There was no wedding cake. No drinks. We made ourselves cups of tea and coffee.

Then the groom handed out menus for the local curry house. Once we'd all picked what we wanted, he asked us to transfer the cost of our orders to his bank account, before he phoned up and placed the order.

After we'd eaten and tidied up, the newlyweds asked us to leave because they were tired.......................no speeches, no fun, no dancing, no music and NO FOOD provided.

AIBU to think this was the worst wedding reception ever?

@TheShellBeach ah but at least you got fed! 🤣
Could you not ask if the £50 voucher you gave them not go towards your curry?

KatieGalPal · 23/12/2022 15:43

A woman I worked with had similar. Invited to the wedding of a colleague of her DH at a fancy hotel. Sit down for the meal and comes to realise that the bride and groom have only paid for the wedding breakfasts for HALF the guests, the other half were fully expected to order of the hotel’s menu and pay themselves. My friend and her DP left (and took the present). Utterly bizarre

Readabookgroucho · 23/12/2022 15:43

That’s one off the tightest things I’ve ever heard of! Unless they’re both on the breadline or something
i can imagine doing this to guests

What was lucky? They got invited to someone's house to pay for a curry they didn't ask for before being asked to leave.

Not sure what OP is supposed to be grateful for.

YANBU OP it sounds awful. Do you know the couple well?

Well, in my OP I said they were friends, but actually he is a very distant cousin a hundred times removed on DH's side. We were surprised to be asked as we only met them once before.

Yes, that's shit.

If they didn't want to spend much, they could have set up a home-prepared buffet, or asked everyone to bring a set dish, or even had a potluck. That would have been very nice.

Ordering curry and getting everyone to transfer money first? Nah.

I agree. How skanky

There's something in this that I find both hilarious and sad that somebody can be so fucking miserable on their wedding day...😂😪

OwwwMuuuum · 23/12/2022 15:45

It’s really bizarre to invite second cousins one hundred times removed, that you’ve only met once before, to your twelve person wedding.

Thats before we even get into the food and the goodbye.

Veryxonfused · 23/12/2022 15:45

This would be only ok if
a - they told you this would be the ‘reception’
b - they paid for the takeaway

TheShellBeach · 23/12/2022 15:45

Unless they’re both on the breadline or something

I honestly do not think they are on the breadline.
The house, the furniture.......all good quality. Nice neighbourhood.

Unless they were both made redundant a few days before the wedding

We had fish and chips for our wedding reception. We did pay for it though

xmaslurgy · 23/12/2022 15:46

Hope the mail don't get hold of this

Coldhouseflowers · 23/12/2022 15:46

Was it April the 1st ?? Sounds awful , there’s low key but this is a joke 😂

Readabookgroucho · 23/12/2022 15:46

I did go to one of a colleagues, we did church then went to reception to discover only half of us had reception invites.
The other 4 had church and evening only.
it was in a tiny village on a a Sunday and nothing was open, son4 of us ( and a few other guest who hadn’t realised ) sat in a spare room at the venue for 5 hours absolutely famished as there was no bar, no other food, no village shop open….
we’d no car as had come via about 6!trains to the arse end of nowhere.
bizarre.

Argeed. It is meant to be your wedding day & a very special day and they way they've celebrated it has ducked the joy out of it.

I have a theory that nearer relatives were invited and declined, knowing what these two are like.

We were surprised to be invited, I admit.

There is nothing wrong with that! It was being asked to pay which felt very odd.

I've been to more enjoyable wakes than that sounds. How utterly bizarre.

LovingTheAbbreviations · 23/12/2022 15:48

Getting you to pay is defo not wedding protocol! Defo weird in my view! Each to their own tho. I would take the gift back if they asked me to pay for the dinner though, two can play at that game 😂

Bog · 23/12/2022 15:51

He shouldn't have asked for payment. That was rude imo.

TenzingNorgay · 23/12/2022 15:51

Well you're not very trustworthy are you? I bet all your family and friends never trust you with any secrets.

It doesn't sound great, but neither do you, judging people behind their backs and gossiping about them. Sly.
