To HATE phone calls

PolarBlair · 22/12/2022 16:31

Family member just phoned me. I missed the call. I phoned back. They missed my call. They phoned back. I picked up. They couldn't hear me. Cue "can you hear me? Hello? Hello? Are you there?"
Me "yes. I can hear you. Yes I can hear you. Yes I can hear you".
They hung up. Tried again. They could hear me.
Told me they'd see me at X time tomorrow. That was all.

I find that so stressful. My blood pressure hasn't come down. I'm actually tense

That could have been a text. JUST SEND ME A TEXT. "See you tomorrow at 2"

Yabu: OP you are so grumpy
yanbu: indeed a text would have sufficed

You need to get a grip.

RambamThankyouMam · 22/12/2022 16:48

I despise talking on the phone. I always have. I'd rather carve my message in caked cowpats with my bare hands than use telephone.

CocoLux · 22/12/2022 16:49

I hate phone calls too. Always have, from being a small child. They make me so anxious and tense.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 22/12/2022 16:49
Confused
TinselSniffer · 22/12/2022 16:51

I am exactly the same. It's all so unnecessarily STRESSFUL, especially if the person you're speaking to can't hear well!

Mistletoeandwinee · 22/12/2022 16:52

I love phone calls with family and friends. It's much more personal than a text.
However, I HATE phone calls with people I don't know or companies. I can't picture what they look like or their expressions or can't understand their accent. It's so stressful.

CrabDuckDuckCrab · 22/12/2022 16:56

Another phonecall dodger. I just hate them. HATE them. The only people I call regularly are my parents.

WatchoRulo · 22/12/2022 16:56

I know it's weirdly contrary but I find the fact that the promise of being able to talk to people pretty much anywhere doesn't match the reality intensely annoying.

I'd rather it didn't exist than the reality of "hello? Hello? can you hear me now" and the incredibly annoying radio interviews where we only get every 6th word and the interviewer acts like it's unusual and says "I think we got the gist of what you were saying" and makes some throwaway comment about technology. Why don't we just refrain from using it until the fucker works?

This is why I also prefer text.

InFiveMins · 22/12/2022 16:57

Same here. It's fucking annoying. Don't call to tell me you'll be 10 mins late, just send a text.

OldTinHat · 22/12/2022 17:00

Hahaha! My DM who is late 70s has just sent me a text to say 'let your fingers do the talking' - ie. stop phoning and just send a text!!

TonTonMacoute · 22/12/2022 17:04

Jesus wept! People can't cope with a phone call these days? Really? How utterly strange.

That's exactly what it was. Unnecessary stress!

But you see it wasn't just a phone call. It was 4 rounds of phone tag and two rounds of can you hear me now. For a 5 word message

Twinstudy · 22/12/2022 17:10

I hate it too. I used to spend hours on the phone as a teenager but I can't stand it now. Just send a bloody text.

But I'm a grumpy old cow and I think if I'm honest, it's partly the intrusion. Like I'm doing something but someone else wants to speak to me so I have to stop it to take their call. I know that makes me sound awful but I probably am so ...😄

Much rather arrange to meet via text and then chat in person.

I can see how that might be a bit irritating, and possibly even a waste of time, but stressful!?

PolarBlair · 22/12/2022 17:17

As a further question - to those of you who think I'm nuts/dramatic:

If, after I didn't pick up the first time, (the subsequent phone tag and the two can't hear you calls) would you have sent a message "see you tomorrow at 2" ... Or would you have persisted? At what point is it easier/nicer for you to send the text?

I don't mean to sound snarky, I'm just curious

I loathe phone calls too.

Not as bad as you OP in that it doesn't cause me stress or affect my blood pressure. But I don't enjoy them and try to end them asap

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 22/12/2022 17:28

Yanbu at all.

Yea fuck social anxiety and phobias, how fucking strange!

mast0650 · 22/12/2022 17:32

That sounds annoying. A text would certainly have been easier in that case. However, I also loathe going back and to and roundabout with messages trying to sort something a bit more complicated when just picking up the phone and discussing it would be so much easer! And a good chat on the the phone with a close friend is a wonderful thing when you have the time.

Westernesse · 22/12/2022 17:39

One of the rudest things you can do these days is to phone someone out of the blue. I absolutely hate it and have my phone on silent at all times so I can screen all calls then message the person back.

bellac11 · 22/12/2022 17:42

Yes I agree with you. I realise I sound like an old fogey but mobiles have ruined phone conversation for me

I cant really hear very well, its even worse when its an internet based line because of the delays and clicks and breaking up.

No one can ever seem to hear me on my phone despite it having full signal, its very stressful and although I dont have poor hearing I really struggle to hear people, also the sound is too loud even though I also cant hear, strange and frustrating.

SomeCommonThing · 22/12/2022 17:43

I hate phone calls.
DH will call me from his car hands free, but he drives a classic car and it's so loud I can't hear him over the engine noise.
My phone is permanently on silent. Just send a text.

Even at work I won't make a phone call that could be an email 😂

dogtheted · 22/12/2022 17:47

Same. My phone is always on silent. I absolutely hate phone calls, even with people I love.
