Egg and soldiers - toast or bread!?

Ok this is lighthearted but it drives my DH mad!

I grew up in Essex so I don’t know if this is an Essex thing but whenever I make egg and soldiers I always cut up buttered bread.

My DH was really confused and asked why have I not toasted the bread so I asked him “what do you mean?” And he just looked at me like I was mad and went on to say you need to use toast because it’s stiff so it’s easy to dip in the egg but I’ve never done it that way, I do it that same way my Nan has always made them, including drawing silly faces on the eggs!

My DH isn’t from the UK either and his whole family find some things I do a bit baffling in general 🙈

So AIBU for dipping bread and not toast? 😂

Toast you animal

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/12/2022 17:07

I'd completely forgotten until I saw this thread that when I was little, my parents always gave us bread soldiers with boiled eggs! And I grew up in Essex.....

2020nymph · 22/12/2022 17:11

Loving all these replies 😂

I was all set to say toast but then I remembered we would occasionally have bread but it would be fresh baked loaf from the bakery.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 22/12/2022 17:17

If the bread is fresh and crusty then it's just wrong to toast it! So either is correct.

TheHateIsNotGood · 22/12/2022 17:27

I normally have toast but sometimes I just fancy bread and butter instead. Works best if you fold over the soldiers so they're shorter and thicker, you can squash them a bit to get them inside the egg. It seems the whites taste better when scooped onto bread and butter too

Toast!

Surely trying to dip bread into a boiled egg is like thumbing in a semi...?

😂😂😂

Toast, OP. Obv.

This debate is on Stacey Solomon’s instagram today….hello Stacey!

Buttered bread here too. From the responses on here I think we must be special and unique...

MarshaBradyo · 22/12/2022 17:36

Toast always

SkinnyFatte · 22/12/2022 17:38

Toast and butter not spread.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 22/12/2022 17:41

Absolutely toast but with butter and marmite. Yum!

spongebunnyfatpants · 22/12/2022 17:45

Nope you don't toast the bread, it's much better that way.

Menopausecankissmyass · 22/12/2022 17:54

Bread and lashings of butter all the way.... Toast is just wrong imo

Thick white bread smothered in lurpak, cut into soldiers.

Pickingmyselfup · 22/12/2022 18:06

Definitely toast but only lightly and definitely buttered. Salt must be sprinkles on the top and the inner or the rest of the egg.

eurochick · 22/12/2022 18:07

Toast you deviant!

I am astounded at the overwhelming toast vote - I had no idea. Always bread here!

InFiveMins · 22/12/2022 18:20

Bread for me, ever since I was a child! I don't dip the bread soldiers into the egg (apart from the crusts which are sturdier). I spoon the egg onto the bread soldier.

Now I've typed it out I realise how weird it is and think I'll make toasted soldiers from now on!

KillingLoneliness · 22/12/2022 18:22

I feel like we are getting more and more bread people! 🤣 I feel less strange now!

I’m with you OP. Thick white bread with plenty of butter. Toast just makes the whole think scratchy instead of the delicious gooey comfort it’s supposed to be!

NumberTheory · 22/12/2022 18:36

(And I’ve always dipped the bread, it holds up fine if it’s thick.)

Don't! You'll be disappointed.
My OH made them with toast (I assumed it's because he's foreign), and it was all wrong!!

OldTinHat · 22/12/2022 18:50

Midlands born here - always bread, never toast. Toast would be very wrong.
