Egg and soldiers - toast or bread!?

Ok this is lighthearted but it drives my DH mad!

I grew up in Essex so I don’t know if this is an Essex thing but whenever I make egg and soldiers I always cut up buttered bread.

My DH was really confused and asked why have I not toasted the bread so I asked him “what do you mean?” And he just looked at me like I was mad and went on to say you need to use toast because it’s stiff so it’s easy to dip in the egg but I’ve never done it that way, I do it that same way my Nan has always made them, including drawing silly faces on the eggs!

My DH isn’t from the UK either and his whole family find some things I do a bit baffling in general 🙈

So AIBU for dipping bread and not toast? 😂

38 seconds in clearly toast 😂

PearlclutchersInc · 22/12/2022 15:32

Toast with loads of butter.

Although, crusty bread (at a push) for dipping might, just might be ok😋.

Happyplant · 22/12/2022 15:32

Toast or for a change sliced crumpets.

BabyFour2023 · 22/12/2022 15:33

How do you dip bread?? Doesn’t it flop about 🤮
TOAST!!!

Tiny2018 · 22/12/2022 15:33

Lincolnshire here, bread and butter cut into strips.

pigsducksandchickens · 22/12/2022 15:33

Great. I've spent 60 years eating my airmen (never had soldiers, we're RAF) with bread and now find I'm weird. Thanks.

But it's ok because DH has bread too. Obviously made for each other!

Hohoholdthesherry · 22/12/2022 15:34

I'm with you, OP, bread. I have never had problems dipping, PPs, what the frick kind of egg yolks and bread do you people have?

I’m so happy it’s not just me, I was beginning to doubt myself 🤣

Toast, liberally buttered with Marmite. Sheer comfort food heaven.

Idbemonica1 · 22/12/2022 15:37

Am in the minority but growing up it was buttered bread in our house

sanityisamyth · 22/12/2022 15:40

Toast! What is the point of dipping floppy bread into soggy egg??

maddiemookins16mum · 22/12/2022 15:42

Toast, Soilders stand to attention.

God I really fancy that for tea now.

Els1e · 22/12/2022 15:44

Bread and butter here. Never knew how wrong I was. 🤭

ColdHandsHotHead · 22/12/2022 15:44

I prefer bread with boiled eggs, but if you want to dip, it must be soldiers as bread is too soft, and also it's not warm.

Orormno · 22/12/2022 15:46

Toast for breakfast
bread for a childhood tea

Fromage · 22/12/2022 15:46

Toast makes soldiers.

Bread makes civilians.

BronwenFrideswide · 22/12/2022 15:46

Bread here too @KillingLoneliness another Northerner, don't doubt yourself - bread all the wayGrin

Purplechicken207 · 22/12/2022 15:48

Logistically, for dunking, toast makes more sense. But I grew up (Hertfordshire) with bread and butter soldiers...(and generally not keen on toast for some reason)

Morceaux · 22/12/2022 15:48

I always preferred it with bread as a child.

The more rigid crust bits would do the heavy lifting.

KimmySchmitt · 22/12/2022 15:48

You're all doing it wrong. Two or three 7 minute boiled eggs removed from the shell, mashed up in a cup with butter and salt, and then either toast or bread and butter to go with it as per your fancy that day,

FlirtyMelons · 22/12/2022 15:49

I've always had bread and butter with them.

cardibach · 22/12/2022 15:50

Bread and butter. Toast would be all the wrong texture. It’s supposed to be a soft comfort food. If you can’t dip bread in you’ve boiled your egg for too long and/or bought crap bread.

fairtrauchled · 22/12/2022 15:52

Toast.
I thought that was the law 😊

MintyPrincess · 22/12/2022 15:52

Toast.
You need the sturdiness

Oblomov22 · 22/12/2022 15:53

Toast. Always.
