Egg and soldiers - toast or bread!?

Ok this is lighthearted but it drives my DH mad!

I grew up in Essex so I don’t know if this is an Essex thing but whenever I make egg and soldiers I always cut up buttered bread.

My DH was really confused and asked why have I not toasted the bread so I asked him “what do you mean?” And he just looked at me like I was mad and went on to say you need to use toast because it’s stiff so it’s easy to dip in the egg but I’ve never done it that way, I do it that same way my Nan has always made them, including drawing silly faces on the eggs!

My DH isn’t from the UK either and his whole family find some things I do a bit baffling in general 🙈

So AIBU for dipping bread and not toast? 😂

How do the soldiers stand up straight if they're made of floppy bread?!

I'm appalled.

Toast!

Surely trying to dip bread into a boiled egg is like thumbing in a semi...?

😂

EnglishMuffins · 22/12/2022 15:24

Are you Stacey Solomon?!

Toast, obviously!

thelobsterquadrille · 22/12/2022 15:24

How is it "egg and soldiers" if it's just cut up, floppy bits of bread?

Soldiers have to stand to attention surely Grin

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 22/12/2022 15:24

Are soldiers tall and straight or floppy op? Get a grip and toast your blooming bread!!

I’ve always kind of scooped with the bread if that makes sense

Crying at this analogy but yes, toast obviously!!!

This is why dating is such a minefield. Someone can appear completely normal, you become attached, then one day they serve you eggs and bread and you realise they are in fact a monster.

NameChagaiiiin · 22/12/2022 15:26

Bread when I was growing up. But I do toast now 🤣

All ya do is use the crust as to attention soldiers, and then you fold your buttery delicious bread strips in half to turn them into stealth soldiers for dunking time.

I really want eggs and soldiers now.

Sorry, no, that makes no sense at all. Bread just isn't strong enough to do the job. Only a real soldier can tackle a boiled egg.

Yorkshire lass here and it's Bread here with a load of real salty butter, my DH is South African and toasts his like a freak, my kids obviously choose the bread version as they aren't weirdo's like my lovely husband

Everydaywheniwakeup · 22/12/2022 15:28

Never toasted, don't think I've ever seen anyone use toast, sounds odd.

crazyBadger · 22/12/2022 15:28

The boy requested bacon to dip in his eggs... And extra bacon, and extra egg....and some toast soliders

SilentShite · 22/12/2022 15:28

Toast!

What you've been eating is a cut up egg sandwich. Not egg and lovely hot, buttery, toasted soldiers Grin

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 22/12/2022 15:28

Also how boiled are you toasty freaks yolks if you can't use bread?!?!

My DH is South African and my kids like yours prefer to use bread with plenty of butter 😋

One slice toasted one slice just buttered is the correct way, obvs

lovemelovemesaythatyouloveme · 22/12/2022 15:29

Toast!

12BottlesOfVintageChampagne · 22/12/2022 15:30

If I have sour dough, I prefer it untoasted. Supermarket bread - definitely toasted.

My husband unwrapped a 4-stick kitkat once, and proceeded to eat it like a sandwich. That shit needs to be disclosed early on in the relationship.

Glitterybee · 22/12/2022 15:30

Toast.

Stacey Solomon is that you ?

OooScotland · 22/12/2022 15:30

nice topic.

Soldiers for me are bread and butter. The crusts are great for that.

Toast isn’t wrong, I just never thought about doing it as soldiers because when I was a kid we didn’t have a toaster (we did have toast sometimes but you had to put the oven on for it and it was the mid 1970’s so…you know…) so my mum just did bread with boiled eggs. I’ve honestly never thought about it!

The fact that you are having to augment the shape of the bread to make it functional shows how wrong it is.

Toast thy bread woman!
