Egg and soldiers - toast or bread!?

Ok this is lighthearted but it drives my DH mad!

I grew up in Essex so I don’t know if this is an Essex thing but whenever I make egg and soldiers I always cut up buttered bread.

My DH was really confused and asked why have I not toasted the bread so I asked him “what do you mean?” And he just looked at me like I was mad and went on to say you need to use toast because it’s stiff so it’s easy to dip in the egg but I’ve never done it that way, I do it that same way my Nan has always made them, including drawing silly faces on the eggs!

My DH isn’t from the UK either and his whole family find some things I do a bit baffling in general 🙈

So AIBU for dipping bread and not toast? 😂

Bread and butter!

BarbaraofSeville · 22/12/2022 15:55

Another vote for team bread and butter. I've not had dippy eggs and soldiers for probably decades but now I want them very much and we have some Warburtons white sliced, so I think I might have that for breakfast tomorrow.

I fear this is going to be another one of those great MN Divides like shoes on/off or loo brushes yes/no, what have you started @KillingLoneliness ?

They can’t stand to attention like soldiers, to be dipped in, unless it’s toasted. On a side note, boiled eggs in our family are named chuckle eggs so for us it’s chuckle egg and soldiers. We only call boiled eggs this though, we aren’t heathens.

Toast!

Surely trying to dip bread into a boiled egg is like thumbing in a semi...?

THE SCREAM I JUST SCRUM

Blowyourowntrumpet · 22/12/2022 16:03

Buttered bread. Never toast

Like feeding a slug into a slot machine.

Toast lol

I'm in Southampton if that makes any difference

randomchap · 22/12/2022 16:09

Absolutely bread. White loaf, thickly sliced, buttered and cut into soldiers.

Toast is OK if the bread is getting stale

Watsername · 22/12/2022 16:10

Bread and butter - I called them ‘choochers’ with a short ‘oo’ like in book. (I think it was my own babyish pronunciation of ‘cho choos’ like trains).

Lochroy · 22/12/2022 16:11

Toast. What use is a flaccid soldier?

yaflouloci · 22/12/2022 16:13

Who eats snotty eggs on floppy bread?!

ChopSuey2 · 22/12/2022 16:13

Prinnny · 22/12/2022 15:29

One slice toasted one slice just buttered is the correct way, obvs

This. I no longer eat eggs, but it seems I am still invested in this debate 😂

Tinytigertail · 22/12/2022 16:14

Absolutely depends on the bread, a nice fresh crusty loaf -bread and loads of salted butter. Generic sliced stuff - toast it.

Chuckie egg for us

AtomicRitual · 22/12/2022 16:17

I cannot stand eggs nowadays, but used to have them lots as a child. I distinctly remember bread with a thick spread of yummy salty butter on them.

My DM learned from her DM, who was German, so that throws another nationality in to the mix!

Bread

If it's good enough for Stacy Solomon....

Couldn't quite think how to put it but..... very much this!

felulageller · 22/12/2022 16:20

Toast

CherieBabySpliffUp · 22/12/2022 16:29

Team bread all the way.

PurplePastaBake · 22/12/2022 16:36

Bread. The dipping slows down the toast eating so it’s just cold and chewy.

Elefant1 · 22/12/2022 16:36

Soldiers were always bread and butter when I was growing up. I am now gluten free and GF bread is no good for soldiers whether it's toasted or not, it just falls apart 😕

My daughter has the Schar white bread and that toasts well and works fine as soldiers .
