I mean WTF? How in earth did a major publication think that it was fine to publish his little sexual fantasy about hurting a woman like that?

I’m no fan of the Royals in any form, and could care less about their infighting, but why are we surprised that there is so much violence against women and girls when this kind of article by an influential man is seen as okay to write?
Where’s his description of a naked, vulnerable Harry being assaulted??

You are 100% correct, I have not read the books. A friend tried to introduce me to GOT (the TV series) several years ago when he was pirating them from the USA via some illegal streaming service. It wasn't for me - and that was before I knew about the shit pelting, but I can obviously see that it has mass appeal.

Part of the problem is that Clarkson wasn't kicked off Top gear for what he did (and did repeatedly).
His contract wasn't renewed which meant that he could get off with no real punishment/sanction and no marks against his name.
Its why he is still aloud to post shit like this.

So, I'm trying to understand what he's saying. iI you hate someone on a "cellular level", logically that means it's beyond their actions (because from the article, she's worse than Rose West apparently), but relates to something more fundamental about what makes them who they are. Like race. Or being a woman.
If you hate someone at a cellular level, my read is that it has nothing to do with what they say or do - it's just hate for what they represent.
Obviously I've complained and believe everyone should do so. It terrifies me that this article was published.

Clarkson using it as a reference with a real woman was stupid and not funny. Just like many bad taste attempts at humour, see my previous comment regarding John bishop joking about killing his wife and putting her head in the fridge. I doubt he was suggesting he was actually going to kill her.

That said it isn't nonsense to judge people who are thrilled with GOT's excess brutality and degradation of women. It is weird to enjoy that crap. 'Epic fantasy' or not.

I have no interest in the royal family and all that stuff. However, you have to accept he deliberately chose this topic to write about, selected the right analogy and I can imagine he was pleased with the final post-editorial version (as I was when I published in academia doing a PhD many years ago). It is an insight on the man, who he is, how he thinks, his view of the world, what is right, what is acceptable.

He is very popular. Lots of people love him and his work. I detest the man. I've known and know a few people like that in real life too. All too common a mindset.

Actually, I have read the books. I was a bit put off by the reportedly soft porn element to the dramatisation on screen so haven't seen much of the series.

The thing is, great literature is one thing and acceptable codes of behaviour are another.

Othello for example is a great play, but anyone would be pilloried who suggested that a woman should be treated like that just because she is in a relationship with someone from a different culture. And making that suggestion wouldn't be funny or witty, it would be inane.

Clarkson's comment was deplorable and in bad taste. Also not funny. I don't think he should be "cancelled", just seen as what he is, a journalist who isn't as funny as he thinks he is. Also, increasingly out of touch.
