How do you not eat all the Christmas stuff 🤷🏻‍♀️

Was planning to do the Christmas shop on Thursday but now thinking it will be packed, wondering whether to get it all tomorrow and be done with it…but, how do you stop yourself tucking into it?
I know that if I know that boxes or Heroes, crisps, crackers, cheese etc is there…I’ll probably start eating a bit each night 😬
Or is that just me?
Should I do it on Thursday to avoid this?
Also, not just me…Dd, 4, will go to the fridge and eat bits and Dh def will too!

It's funny how some of us can compartmentalise foods for special occasions and some can't.

I wonder if it depends on who you live with and their eating habits. One Xmas I lived with a boyfriend who was a complete hoover. Any food that I bought would disappear when I was at work and I never got a look in. I learned to get my hands on some sooner rather than later.

I was brought up in a family of four, and pretty much everything was shared equally. So I grew up with a mental thing in the back of my mind thinking 1/4 of this is mine iyswim. Many men I've lived with don't have that (I've never lived with a woman!) and just eat without considering they're actually taking it away from someone else or like at Xmas they may not be able to get more for actual Xmas day.

Now I live alone, no one is going to pinch anything and I won't miss out. I've swung a bit too far the other way now, buy treats on a whim and forget that I've bought them and discover them months later Confused

I wish I could indulge on cheese and crackers, but where the hell do I find them? None in my Lidl and Asda. It's crazy. Where did you buy plain crackers? Is there national shortage or something?

XmasElf10 · 19/12/2022 10:26

We start early! This week is a "Christmassy" week so we eat a few bits every day. You can only eat so much food on Xmas day!

I found some nice cheese in Sainsburys and Morrisons. Cracker assortment in Morrisons.

DH isn't really a snacker, but wouldn't eat our Christmas food early anyway, kids are too young to help themselves and I've just never felt tempted, don't want to end up without something on the day due to eating it beforehand.
We do like pigs in blankets though, so always buy extra to eat beforehand.

Erm just don’t eat it!

Have a modest Christmas without some of the things you mention. Look at some of them as things to get next week as part of the 12 days of Christmas, perhaps.

You have recognised an issue or kind of addiction, an important step.

Could you put the Xmas fridge stuff in a cardboard box and tape it shut before it goes in the fridge?

How big is your fridge 😐

Yeah, I've got quite a small fridge and it's like fridge Tetris at Christmas 😅

I'm just curious is all. I know there's huge chest freezers but I've never seen a fridge that could hold a cardboard box of food. Maybe I've had a sheltered life.

Scalottia · 19/12/2022 11:42

Why is a 4 year old helping herself to things from the fridge?

Just buy it and don't eat it.

Thank you ❤ I think I might go for a trip around supermarkets today then. I need carrots and parsnips for 23rd of December to do some cooking. I think they will be fine for 4 days, I could kill two birds with one stone and be done with Christmas shopping and actually enjoy my days off work.

I know, I was agreeing with you Xmas Smile

Mind, some people do have those roomy American fridges, don't they?

TheKitchenWitch · 19/12/2022 11:54

I plan (and make/buy) things specifically for the run up to Christmas.

zingally · 19/12/2022 12:30

Apart from stuff for set meals, anything else is pretty much fair game. I'll probably do my big shop first thing Thursday morning, and then it's game on. DH and I are pretty good at self-restraint, so will naturally spread our treats out over the weekend. The kids are nearly 6, so don't have free rein over the fridge away. I have a chest freezer in the garage, so some of their treat bits will go in there to start with.

I have some self control. I also don't like eating loads of crap.

Does your 4yo really go to the fridge and help themselves?

BirdyWoof · 19/12/2022 12:38

Willowswood · 18/12/2022 18:57

Because if you start eating it, you just have to replace it or have nothing for Christmas!!

Have you really got such little willpower? Comes across as quite greedy.

Are you always this miserable or is it just Christmas week?

Tigofigo · 19/12/2022 12:42

We've already eaten all the mince pies, nearly all the chocolates and have started tucking in to the port and stilton ... And loving it.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 19/12/2022 12:42

I don't buy loads but I put it all in a separate cupboard, or in the salad drawer of the fridge if needed, so it's not counted in with general food.

Eat it!
for a week or so, indulge in yummy stuff.
and don’t feel bad about it

This.

My husband opened the tub of Quality Street a few days ago, and we've scoffed the lot. Need to buy more in the week

justasking111 · 19/12/2022 12:50

Shopped for goodies this morning. Hidden away bar the fridge stuff.

To be fair, the tubs are absolutely tiny these days.

I remember a tub of Quality Street lasting about a week, if not longer, when I was a child. Now it’s 2 or 3 days!

At this time of year we use the conservatory as a second "fridge".

We generally start things like Christmas cake on Christmas Eve because usually we are too stuffed with other things on Christmas Day and the following days to fancy any.

I'm always puzzled at questions like the OP has posted. People used to say to us "how can you not drink all the wine in your wine rack?" Erm, well we buy wine so that it is there when we fancy some, but don't want to drink wine every day.

Do people really have such little self control?
