How do you not eat all the Christmas stuff 🤷🏻‍♀️

Was planning to do the Christmas shop on Thursday but now thinking it will be packed, wondering whether to get it all tomorrow and be done with it…but, how do you stop yourself tucking into it?
I know that if I know that boxes or Heroes, crisps, crackers, cheese etc is there…I’ll probably start eating a bit each night 😬
Or is that just me?
Should I do it on Thursday to avoid this?
Also, not just me…Dd, 4, will go to the fridge and eat bits and Dh def will too!

I think a week either side of Christmas is ‘Christmas’ and therefore fair game to be eaten. The couple of food shops I do around Christmas I buy the usual festive bits and they aren’t saved for the specific day.

thelobsterquadrille · 18/12/2022 19:19

We just eat it and replace it before Christmas Grin

fancyacuppatea · 18/12/2022 19:19

Willowswood · 18/12/2022 18:57

Because if you start eating it, you just have to replace it or have nothing for Christmas!!

Have you really got such little willpower? Comes across as quite greedy.

Oh do pipe down. Are you one of those competitive undereaters who "couldn't possibly eat a WHOLE salad"

I'm with you OP crisps are my vice and all the flavours, bar the mince pie flavour crisps have been tried and tested....repeatedly.

Fairislefandango · 18/12/2022 19:24

We won't be at home for Christmas, but when we do host we don't buy loads and loads of stuff or big tins of chocolates etc. We don't shop way in advance, and we don't eat and drink up the stuff we've bought for Christmas... because it's for Christmas!

Yesthatsit · 18/12/2022 19:25

I think I read on here once that normal sized people overindulge at Xmas on the actual day and eat normally the rest of the time. Fat people just use the season of Xmas as licence to eat what they like for weeks on end. I think about that every Christmas now when I’m looking at all the food!

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 18/12/2022 19:26

We start ours from half term.
So scoffing already

I may have indulged in a few of these earlier. You don't get many in a tin these days though.
I find them better than Wotsits because there's no orange dust. They're like Cheesy Moments but they seem to be long gone.

OooScotland · 18/12/2022 19:31

I started the food shopping day before yesterday and I’ve already somehow eaten a box of pringles and two packs of Tunnocks caramel wafers 😬 luckily for my DH I don’t like mince pies and stollen….

But the real question is when does Christmas begin? For me, 1 December is a bit early: it feels decadent and debauched like the last days of Rome to even sniff a Quality Street. But 24 December is a bit late to the party, turning up empty-handed and sober at midnight.

This year the snow was the tipping point for me: nature WANTED me to a box of Turkish delight with a charcuterie chaser.

6poundshower · 18/12/2022 19:43

We've eaten a Xmas cake this weekend...

I prefer to scoff for a couple of weeks in December, stop at Xmas day or boxing day latest, and thereby regain some normality before new years.

bigbluebus · 18/12/2022 19:46

Crisps and nibbly bits all go in the spare bedroom out of the way. (There are other crisps in the kitchen which can be eaten). I have a 2nd fridge in the garage which I put Christmas food into so everyone knows not to eat it until I give permission - although I mistakenly put a brie in the kitchen fridge last night and had to rescue it from DS's hands today as it was heading for his panini. (Other cheese was available).

theswoot · 18/12/2022 19:48

This is one thing I can recommend ADHD for. If I put it away, I forget about it. DH too!

Sparklingbrook · 18/12/2022 19:53

I had a brie, bacon and cranberry sauce sandwich yesterday. Cheese is cheese all year round as far as I'm concerned.

2ManyPjs · 18/12/2022 19:53

Anything that can be frozen shove it in the freezer until Xmas Eve, like smoked salmon (even chocolate)! Obviously won't be as fresh as unfrozen but at least it will still exist!

DashboardConfessional · 18/12/2022 19:55

Eh, DS has finished nursery and it's basically Christmas.

Cracks open the Pringles

AzureOrchid · 18/12/2022 19:57

Ha ha , this is so me. I’ve already eaten the St Agur and have cooked one packet of part bake rolls. Also cooked three packets of frozen party food. Also opened selection boxes to eat the chocolate then put the individual bars into the kids packed lunch boxes etc 🤣 I am a nightmare for this … if the stuffs there it gets used or eaten , I’ll need to go buy more stuff this week.

Notplayingball · 18/12/2022 19:58

We did our main Christmas shop on Friday and shops were heaving.

I have been good so far and kept away from mince pies.

Stomacharmeleon · 18/12/2022 20:00

My mum, without fail, would eat the brandy butter with a spoon at least five times before the big day...

Fairislefandango · 18/12/2022 20:01

But the real question is when does Christmas begin?

For me it's when schools break up. So around the 16th (though my dc don't break up until the 21st this year!). That's when I put the tree up etc, and I buy the odd few festive snacks intended to be eaten over the next week. If hosting I wouldn't buy the actual Christmas food until 21st or 22nd (except for ordering the turkey in advance!).

berrycakeandcustard · 18/12/2022 20:02

I have the same dilemma @Itsonlyaweekaway

I know if I buy too early I'll struggle to leave it there til Christmas, it'll just be too tempting! Like you, I can't afford to buy twice this year. Leave it too late to shop and I know from past experience all the the treats I like best will be gone from the shelves (I'm coeliac so there's not as much choice available).

Hope you find a solution and have a good, treat filled Christmas 🙂

DuplicateUserName · 18/12/2022 20:03

Itsonlyaweekaway · 18/12/2022 19:01

@Willowswood 🙄 I can likely hide chocolates, crisps, crackers etc from everyone and not touch it. But things like cheeses, pork pies and all the lovely nibbly bits will have to go in the fridge…they’ll just get demolished by Dd and Dh
I save it all for a nice Xmas Eve meal and chocs etc, Christmas Day meal and then my fave…the cheese and crackers. I can’t afford to get doubles of everything. Should I just leave it until Thursday and face the crowds 🤔 scared they’ll be nothing left!

Your child is 4, that's more than old enough to understand 'no'.

As for your DH, just make sure he replaces whatever Christmas stuff he eats.

If you get it tomorrow, it's only 5 days to wait anyway assuming you open most of the things on Christmas Eve?

RobertaFirmino · 18/12/2022 20:04

All of ours is in a designated cupboard. I can easily compartmentalise but I have had lots of addiction therapy in my life. DH wants to get stuck in straight away and normally, I'd be ok about it, we could always buy more. Things are tight this year though so he's been told that absolutely nothing is to be opened before the 23rd. If he does, he has to replace out of his personal spends, not the joint money.

I know this makes me sound like a tight arsed harridan but times are hard right now.

LittleCottage · 18/12/2022 20:08

Did it yesterday. Tucking in.

Figgypudding123 · 18/12/2022 20:09

This weekend DH ans I ate two boxes of Tunnock's snowballs and two tubs of Pringles that I'd tucked away at the back of the cupboard. Then we woke up to the fact that we have absolutely no self control and have refused to buy anymore Christmas snacks until 23rd....
