I bought a JOIE 360° car seat which at the time seemed extortionate but when I look at how much ease it has given me over the years I think it was worth every penny.
Ditto expensive Dr Marten boots.

AIBU to ask what you've considered expensive when you bought it but in hindsight realised was worth it?

My Didriksons winter coat. Worth every single penny, especially at current temperatures. I don't spend a lot on most clothes, but for coats and boots it's worth paying for quality and durability.

BoardingSchoolMater · 17/12/2022 22:26

Agree re D R Harris toiletries and a heat pump tumble dryer, along with the school fees, Aga, mattress, cashmere and Charlie Bigham. And decent scent (Chanel or Floris).

In my defence, I don't spend anything on make-up, nails, cosmetic stuff, hair etc.

I do love Dr Marten boots and used to have several pairs in the 90,s when they were about £50-70 ,they were still expensive at the time but so worth it lasted for years ,sadly they are out of my price range now and can't justify the cost just for me but still love them.

The quality has sunk massively now so you're not missing much. Solovairs (the original Dr Marten bootmaker) are much better for off-the-shelf boots now.

KimberleyClark · 17/12/2022 22:28

Oh yes Charlie Bigham. Actually good value substitute for a take away.

BatshitBanshee · 17/12/2022 22:31

Private maternity and postnatal care. My consultant was a complete warrior for me in my last pregnancy and birth - and afterwards when I needed some MH help. I've gone back to them for subsequent pregnancy, literally told DH I'm not going through another pregnancy or birth without my consultant.

Cleaner: just does the kitchen and bathrooms, but as we both work full time, I work away once a week, DS has a million activities and we want some time together at the weekend… it’s worth every penny.

velvertiser.
ghd straighteners
Longchamp tote bag
ray bans
cosy leather uggs. 6 years on and they’re still worn every winter

not worth it:
dyson hairdryer: prefer my cheap babyliss
instapot. Used it twice. Gave it to my friend who was going to buy one. Hope she gets more use out of it

IntentionalError · 17/12/2022 22:35

Apple devices. My iPhone 6s lasted five years, and the iPad on which I’m typing this is still going strong after 4.5 years.

Spent £1500 on a mattress but got it off the returns list in dreams so was actually a £3500 mattress, the packaging had been opened but that was it... Best £1500 ever!.
My gold jewellery... only appreciates in value(if you buy wisely) and I LOVE jewellery

Decent shoes, have 4 doc Martins but always buy in the boxing day sales for half price - still look good as new.

Anything ninja - have the blender and airfryer just amazing and so worth the money

I have recently purchased the Joseph Joseph washing basket, food bin and toilet brush- hoping by pp it lasts as long as you all say, it was bloody expensive!

I’m not going to read about it but as soon as I read goose coat I thought erm no I’ve a feeling that’s not going to be ethical.

It’s much worse than that.
You said you won’t look it up so I won’t upset you with the details. But it’s worse than you’re thinking about geese.

HootOwlStrikesAgain · 17/12/2022 22:37

Echo a lot of the things said already! Buy once or buy twice (or many more times) so I collect things very gradually that are good quality:

• Global kitchen knives
• All kitchenware basically - it is a false economy to buy it cheap. I started with none, bought cheap and all useless. Have instead now spent 20 years upgrading it all to decent stuff and so much better.
• High thread count bed linen and a high quality matress. Also heavy velvet blankets to go on top.
• perfumes (you can tell the difference with good quality ones from a mile away).
• Coats and knitwear. Coats stuffed with goose down so actually warm. Knitwear made of cashmere/ alpaca etc so soft but warm and lasts.
• Shoes. Most high street ones are awful now. Found a company in Italy and you send them your measurements and they make custom made boots for not that much more than decent quality off-the-shelf versions from shops in the UK.
• private healthcare definitely. Without it my parents would be dead, I'd be unable to work now and one of my children would be deaf.
• miele appliances, yes, to PP!

Notellinganyone · 17/12/2022 22:38

Independent Midwives for DC2&3’s births. Best money I ever spent . Decent mattress - last one lasted 15 years and bought a new one last year. Cashmere jumpers and wool coats for warmth.

Notallislost · 17/12/2022 22:39

Oh and clarity braces and laser hair removal - life changing in so many ways!

Bluevelvetsofa · 17/12/2022 22:40

Heated seats and heated steering wheel in the car.
My Apple Watch, old though it is now
Cashmere, not that I have much

ChristmasCaroline · 17/12/2022 22:44

And agree with Birkenstocks too. Bought a pair for going on honeymoon years ago, and although they are pretty expensive for sandals, they are worth it price per wear

LankylegsFromOz · 17/12/2022 22:46

Pilates! The return on investment will see me through a healthy old age.

BedTaker · 17/12/2022 22:46

Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax bath oil. It's like 50 quid for a bottle, but each time you use it it's like a proper experience, it really is amazing!

HootOwlStrikesAgain · 17/12/2022 22:48

KimberleyClark · 17/12/2022 22:13

Expensive perfume is not worth the money. They spend far more on branding than the actual perfume.

Oh but it is.

StillMedusa · 17/12/2022 22:48

My GHDs... 16 years old and still going strong.
My Barbour coat... god only knows how old that is!
My Emma mattress... I have arthritis and it has reduced my back pain considerably even tho it feels hard as a brick.
Macbook... 12 years old and refuses to die!

UniversalAunt · 17/12/2022 22:50

Ninja Foodie.
Now a couple of years old, used three times a day.
If it broke - which seems unlikely as it is built like a tank - I’d replace without a moment’s hesitation. It toasts, roasts, grills, pressure cooks, sautés, air fries & prolly more than I have not yet worked out. The one accommodation in the kitchen I made was to get a low table to put it on so that I could see & reach down into it. It takes small effort to find Pyrex/casseroles to fit the smaller diameter, but Google/Amazon usually has stuff. Just one missing feature is a ‘ping’ - like a microwave - when cooking has completed, but I can live without it.

Seasalt raincoat, about £150 for comfy robust stylish warm rainproof coat with good zips.

Good mattress, this one from John Lewis in the sale, otherwise scary money, but worth every penny.

Good shoes.

Regular visits to dental hygienist - every 12 weeks - to keep gums in good order & teeth super bright.

And agree with Birkenstocks too. Bought a pair for going on honeymoon years ago, and although they are pretty expensive for sandals, they are worth it price per wear

They also make very comfortable winter boots.
