I bought a JOIE 360° car seat which at the time seemed extortionate but when I look at how much ease it has given me over the years I think it was worth every penny.
Ditto expensive Dr Marten boots.

AIBU to ask what you've considered expensive when you bought it but in hindsight realised was worth it?

What’s happened to it?

I was coming on to say my Brabantia- have had it 21 years and still going strong!

I spent £150 on a Wesco bin 27 years ago and it's still going strong. Almost as good as new apart from a tiny dent in the lid. Seems the Germans know how to make bins as well as cars. 😀

The lid is looking very battered and tired and the metal handle to pull the plastic bin out is bust - but some genius earlier on this thread told me I can get replacement parts direct from branabtia - so for £22 for a new lid I’ll have another happy 15 years! 🙏

I’ve not worn much makeup beyond lipstick in the last three decades, but can’t imagine paying so much for farding my face. You are probably right about the new formulations, but the prices are terrifying for a tiny dab.

I’ve bought 2 frying pans in a set from Ninja recently. They are fabulous and not actually that expensive.

I'm planning on a low spend January after a fairly disastrous Oct/Nov/Dec but I might just bite the bullet and do it.

Furries · 19/12/2022 11:21

@BadShepherd - excellent, hope your bin gets a new lease of life!

FaceLikeASmackedArse · 19/12/2022 11:22

My Phillips Lunea IPL device.

As a PCOS sufferer (more body hair than the average non-PCOS woman that is growing back with an hour of removal) with super sensitive skin to boot, meant shaving, waxing, epilating, creams etc, all left me with constant sore rashes, lumps, ingrown hairs and infected sores. It made me so miserable. I couldn't go swimming, or to the beach, on a whim, because I was either too hairy or covered in unsightly hair removal sores.

This device changed my life

Solar panels

Iamwhatiam52 · 19/12/2022 11:27

Dyson Airwrap - cuts drying time by half, literally.
Dyson Straighteners.
Burmese cats - bloody expensive but oh so worth it.

Tigger85 · 19/12/2022 11:33

A decent mattress

Woodburner- keeps living room and dining room warm so we are not freezing this winter

Quality musical instrument if that's your main hobby. Inspires you to practice more

Ivf cost us around 50k in loan's and lots of heart break but we now have two living wonderful ds's.

Good quality warm waterproof coat and boots, last year's keep you warm, dry and comfortable.

riceuten · 19/12/2022 11:37

A Wenger mini rucksack. I used to go through about 2 or 3 a year with ones bought from the luggage shop (ca. £20-30), but I bought a Wenger at TK Maxx for £50 and it has lasted me 3 years - no zips are broken, nor is it torn internally.

woodhill · 19/12/2022 12:26

Radley purses or the older ones are very good and their bags

Iwouldlikesomecake · 19/12/2022 12:53

(Off to google replacement parts for brabantia bins)

woodhill · 19/12/2022 13:51

My bin lid from Brabantia was replaced free with 10 year guarantee

Still going strong

Deal of the day: Philips Lumea Prestige IPL - Hair Removal Device with 4 Intelligent attachments, Hair Removal for Women and Men (Model BRI948/00) amzn.eu/d/5187BF0

Is it this one?@FaceLikeASmackedArse

I hate waxing and get terrible ingrown hairs from shaving so was considering something like this. How painful is it? I'm a bit of a wimp!

That's the one. And no pain whatsoever. It has intensity settings, so if you feel anything at all, you just lower the intensity. But even if you feel something, it's only slight discomfort and couldn't be described as pain.

Quite literally the best money I ever spent. Wish they'd been around when I was a lot younger.

gillybean89 · 19/12/2022 14:49

Interesting to read some of these. Money is tight here so I often go back and forth with myself over whether something is worth the money. Glad to hear about the Ugg slippers, I will have a look in the sales next week as I practically live in slippers.

I agree r.e. Dr martens not being as long lasting these days. I have 3 pairs which I love but have never paid full price for any. My dad wore the same pair of Dr martens every day for 25 years. He still wears Dr martens every day but has to replace them about once a year now.

I've just ordered a new lid from Brabantia - it cost me £34 but I've had it for years and the rest of the bin is in really good nick! I was going to spend the same amount on a new bin from Dunhelm until DS2 pointed out that it's probably a false economy 😁

BadShepherd · 19/12/2022 16:09

@gillybean89 My finances have fluctuated enormously over the years - but when times have allowed, I’ve bought “better” - eg the aforementioned brabantia bin, cashmere, good leather and furniture I bought in 2000 i daren’t even consider the price of in modern times. It’s very unfair that real quality really will last and hold its value. Le sigh.

Verv · 19/12/2022 16:21

A good automatic or mechanical watch
Tempur mattress and pillows
Uggs

If you’ve got fairly small feet, then it’s worth looking at the kids slippers. I’m a size 5 and got my current pair from the kids section - half the price of buying adult slippers. Going by my last pair, they’ll last me a good few years.

Flixon · 19/12/2022 17:43

My horse. saved my sanity literally over covid and the utter chaos that is running a NHS business. i love her and couldn't be without her.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 19/12/2022 17:45

I'm glad I went for the more expensive cooker a few years back. Could have got one for half the price but they all seemed to have dodgy reviews (even allowing that people who are unhappy are more likely to tell you), or something wouldn't be right, like a combination oven and grill. The Belling I chose in the end cost more but has been great.

SouthernComforter · 19/12/2022 17:49

Celtic Sheepskin slippers (with the outdoor sole) - they have lasted years and are deeply warming!
Coffee from my local cart, a bit of a luxury but it is good coffee from a lovely man who also supplies bread, pastries, homemade soup etc and I value having him around the corner (especially on endless days working from home).
New extra thick mattress (half price in the sale at M&S so a good price really. It'sjust that mattresses are expensive items).
My gym membership (only a council gym but includes tennis courts and our town's swimming pools).

AndAway · 19/12/2022 17:50

Love this thread.

My good winter coat, bought for £250. Into its 8th year and I still love it. So warm.
Mattress. Got a new one 2 years ago and spent a lot on it. Sore backs cured instantly.
Our shower. Replaced it last year and have an amazing one now. Better than any hotel I've been in. I love it.

We live a very working class life but I love these little luxuries and they've been worth every penny.

MarkHemmings · 19/12/2022 17:52

I always buy cheap and buy twice ... bollocks to it ...
