I bought a JOIE 360° car seat which at the time seemed extortionate but when I look at how much ease it has given me over the years I think it was worth every penny.
Ditto expensive Dr Marten boots.

AIBU to ask what you've considered expensive when you bought it but in hindsight realised was worth it?

Aveda products - don't always use the shampoos but do like them

Jo Malone room diffuser. Got it as a gift. Amazed at how lovely it is.
1000 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets.
Lily Blanche Memory Keeper Locket.

Top quality pans and knives. Got an original carbon steel sabatier set of knives, over 50 years old, brilliant to use and sharpen well. My parents have a sofa, 70 years old, been recovered 3 times and the upholsterer always comments on how well made and solid it is. Not like modern ones, may be more stylish but not made to last.

BornAgainCountryBumpkin1 · 18/12/2022 22:51

A decent coat every 5-6 years. Current one might even last longer. On year 4 & still looks immaculate. Swedish brand I think & even though over £300, year on year cost makes up for it. Been through some tough, cold weather & I'm all snug & bone dry underneath. Other than that stingiest person alive.

Private hearing aids. Cost over £2k but SO MUCH better than the NHS ones.

Apple iPhone, iPad and Netbook - Originally I was a denier but I’m converted after years of struggling with Android and Windows.

My skin care (Sunday riley, Kate Somerville and perricone) are ridiculously expensive but absolutely worth it. Especially as I can spread the payments with Klarna!
I kid you not these products deal with those wrinkles and firmness!

But don’t you get bored of it? I have at least 3 new ones each year and about 12 in my wardrobe at any one time. Surely most people don’t just have one coat for years and years? Why are you stingy? What are you saving it for?

Ofcourseshecan · 19/12/2022 00:10

Silk thermal underwear. Not sexy undies but plain long-johns, short-johns and a variety of vests and camisoles.

In this wintry weather they’re more a practical necessity than a luxury. In any British season they make clothes hang better and let you go longer without a coat. They’re light as a whisper and so thin they add no bulk at all, while providing very effective insulation.

I buy from patra.com. Not cheap, but I’d never be without them now. I machine wash them on the gentlest setting, in padded bags, and they last years.

Mamai90 · 19/12/2022 00:22

Meile hoover- I've always used a Dyson but there's no comparison.

Icandy buggy -When DD was born I paid £850 for a cosatto giggle pram. I was clueless and just liked the look of it. It was OK but bulky and couldn't put more than a change bag in the basket. After 9 months we bought the Icandy and it's fantastic in comparison.

Agree on the ninja too.

@KimberleyClark Most expensive makeup manufactured in US/UK/EU/Japan/Australia contains the same quality ingredients found in drugstore brands like Cover Girl and Revlon. My organic chemistry professor told the class this over thirty years ago.
My Shifman mattress is great. It’s one of the firmest mattresses available commercially, and it’s lasted 16 years with little wear.
My classic sealpoint Siamese. She is a great companion, and even helps me choose shoes.

Ooh yes, definitely Siamese cats 👍

When I was younger and I was out and about more, mixing in different circles etc, one coat might have been limiting. Maybe still. But I have never had a coat or jacket that wouldn't last two or three years, and most would last a lot longer. I've never been able to afford three new coats a year, and would never want twelve - have always had three or four in regular use, and maybe a couple used occasionally. But now, I think I would rather have one I loved than twelve, simply because I am tired of having so much stuff.

If you enjoy clothes and fashion, that's fine, but for a lot of people owning less is about making mindful ethical choices while for others the choice is down to economics. Now, I prefer to own less and do more, but it's a personal choice.

I’ll second divorce, but also bins. I spent over £100 in 2008 on a brabantia and I fear it’s finally ready to be replaced.

What’s happened to it?

I was coming on to say my Brabantia- have had it 21 years and still going strong!

Furries · 19/12/2022 01:53

My iPhone - had it almost 10 years
My Dreamland faux fur heated throw - year 5 and still love it
Ninja dual drawer air fryer - cooks quicker than the oven
Dualit toaster - had it around 13 years
Smeg fridge - replaced it earlier this year, but got 20 years out of it
My cottage - I love it, won’t be moving again, am forever grateful that this is my home
My 2 cats and dog - sadly no dog and just one cat now, but they all were/are the best companions
My Bosch cordless mower - in its 6th year and so easy to use
My mirror TV - a complete extravagance, but suits my interior way more than a normal tv
Little Greene paint - expensive, but it goes a long way and the pigmentation etc is great
Paying for a garden waste bin/collection. So much easier than trips to the dump
Pre-lit Christmas tree - the joy of not untangling and then winding sets of lights!
Cook frozen meals - much prefer them to Charlie Bigams

Sferra bedding. Hideously expensive but somehow helped my insomnia.

My university text books.
So expensive but saved me the constant worry that I wouldn't be able to borrow them from the uni library (more students wanting them than copies available), or that if I did that someone else would reserve it so I could only have them for a short while.

Collins & Hayes sofas when we first moved into our flat. 30 years and a family later and they still look good. We had to buy them on 6 months credit at the time, but well worth it.

FoodologistGirl · 19/12/2022 09:17

Dualit toaster, husband was given as a first house present from work. 30 years later and still works well although we did have to change the elements once. It’ll see us out!

whilst the ingredients may be similar I suspect the quantities will vary causing a difference in quality.
An eyeshadow from Mac is much more pigmented and applies better than one from Revolution for example. It also has a much better staying power.

You do get what you pay for with make up and it’s taken years of buying cheap end stuff for me to realise this.
