I bought a JOIE 360° car seat which at the time seemed extortionate but when I look at how much ease it has given me over the years I think it was worth every penny.
Ditto expensive Dr Marten boots.

AIBU to ask what you've considered expensive when you bought it but in hindsight realised was worth it?

As a teenage mum in the 1970s I adjusted to never spending any money on me that wasn't essential. I struggle to change but I have an urge to buy a Ninja saucepan set. Is it mad?

I’ve bought 2 frying pans in a set from Ninja recently. They are fabulous and not actually that expensive.

@KangarooKenny try pukka (my favourite is mint and liquorice, or bedtime blend or elderberry & echinacea) or tea pigs (all are incredible)

I now buy a bag of dried liquorice root and a bag of dried peppermint that I mix together in a tea caddy. Makes lovely tea in one of those infuser tea pots.

Ah yes, quality cookware! I bought my Le Creuset pans almost 30 years ago (in the sale, as a fairly new grad...carrying them home nearly killed me!) and have stuck with Le Creuset ever since. But during lockdown, a friend lent me his Staub casserole and OMG I loved it! The dimples in the top make a difference to the food and I became a convert and bought my own Staub. Worth every penny!

Can anyone recommend a good quality knife?

I have a mix - down now to five knives that we use all the time. A Breda knife, a Sabatier cleaver, two Ikea cooks' knives and a Global vegetable knife. Every Saturday morning, I soak my whetstone and sharpen them all. I try to tell myself the Global one is best because of how much I spent on it, but really, I prefer one of the Ikea knives. Learning to use the whetstone was key - the way my old knives glide through a tomato makes me glad I learned every time.

I offended a flouncer poster upthread suggesting that instead of owning a large plastic unit to seal their cat's poo in individual plastic-wrapped portions, they could buy corn litter and flush it. Some people might not know about this and it makes our cat-owning much simpler, it helps to have choices. And in real life it's not always easy/polite to say hey, that's not that green/ethical you k'now so it is useful to be able to say on here. Not necessarily judgey-pants.

Fair enough, it might not damage your pipes or clog up your loo.. Good for you!
But

"Cat excrement is a very dangerous substance, and most water treatment plants can not make it safe. It is classed as a pollutant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency(opens in new tab) which states that the group of polluting materials it is included with "…can harm fish and wildlife populations, kill native vegetation, foul drinking water, and make recreational areas unsafe and unpleasant."

It can also contain the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which won't be killed by water treatment centers or septic tanks. This means it will then continue into the water system or surrounding water table and infect other animals, including humans. Although typically dealt with by our immune systems, it can be deadly, especially for those with compromised immune systems. Marine and river life is already showing high levels of this kind of parasitic infection near waste outlets, and the likely cause is – yep – cat litter being flushed down the toilet."

You must be so good at looking after it, I no longer buy cashmere as ours succumbs to either being shrunk , eaten by moths or getting holes some other way within months! My concession is cashmere gloves as so warm but they do always have holes in

Once a year, when knitwear season is over, bag up all your wool and cashmere and stick in the freezer for 48 hours.

Moths will be dead.

Either that or get into visible mending.

Can I ask what mattress? We bought a Domeo octosmart recently and it's bloody rubbish! I'm desperate to replace it but don't want to make another expensive mistake 😕

A padded waterproof coat from Barbour. Cost me around £200 in a sale 8 years ago. Worn it every autumn/winter since. It still looks good and was worth every penny.

Perfumes from Miller Harris, Penhaligons and Byredo. Last well and I've never found anything that comes close.

@TicTac80 ooo what air conditioner have you got? I'm desperate for one for next summer!

blisstwins · 18/12/2022 18:09

pocketvenuss · 18/12/2022 15:12

@Cactusprick @blisstwins you need to keep up. The people spoke and they listened. They no longer use fur and their down is ethically sourced. That's more than many other brands do. Why are you boycotting a brand who did the right thing?

This makes me so happy. Thank you for letting me know of the change.

Yep I said that earlier. I love it!!!!
