I bought a JOIE 360° car seat which at the time seemed extortionate but when I look at how much ease it has given me over the years I think it was worth every penny.
Ditto expensive Dr Marten boots.

AIBU to ask what you've considered expensive when you bought it but in hindsight realised was worth it?

Canada Goose coats are well known and loved by the luxury industry as being one of the highest-margin products out there, meaning the cost of materials is tiny compared to the cost of sale. The mark up is c600x. Does it make you feel good to know you’ve been utterly ripped off for your purchase, as well as the fact it’s also a brand well known for animal cruelty on a huge scale?

I doubt the poster cares about the 'mark up' on luxury purchases. If they can easily afford it, the cost is irrelevant. Whether it is ethical is a completely different argument.

Merino wool baselayers
Merrell Snowboots (I got them 12/13yrs ago and only this year am I paying to have zip replaced on one of them).
North Face waterproof warm winter coat.
Heat-Holders socks - lovely, soft and warm.
My four cats - the kids and I love them so much.
Tumble drier
Ninja Food Dual Zone air fryer - saves me a huge amount of time, and the kids can safely use it too.
Divorce - I'm still sad that things didn't work out, but I'm very glad to not be in such an awful situation anymore.
Thermomix TM6 and Friend - again, saves me a huge amount of faff. I love cooking but this does a lot of the prep, saves a lot of washing up, and means that I can get on and do other things instead of standing at the hob.
Eufy Robovac - saves a lot of time and keeps the place clean.
Kuddly (it's like an Oodie) - I bought the kids one each at Xmas last year, and then got myself one.
Kindle Paperwhite (it's 10yrs old and still going strong!)
Ipad, iMac and Macbook - they've all lasted years and have never given any problems.
Air con unit for the summer.
Velvetiser - something the kids can use themselves to have a nice hot drink. Real treat for me to have a "posh hot chocolate"!

I'm a single parent of 2, working FT, so basically anything that makes life easier (or warmer!) for me and the kids is a Good Thing. I tend to really research things and think/save up for ages before making a decision about buying something pricey.

A robot hoover and fake grass! And no I'm not worried about the environmental impact of the grass as we had a boggy mud patch before!!

TheOGCCL · 18/12/2022 14:25

Quooker tap for me. Most expensive single thing I’ve ever bought apart from the house itself.

blisstwins · 18/12/2022 14:32

Cactusprick · 17/12/2022 22:22

Oh gross :(
Can’t believe people still buy from Canada Goose.

I agree totally. Breaks my heart.

HootOwlStrikesAgain · 18/12/2022 14:32

Oh yes velvetiser! We use that so much in winter. Hot choc around the fire with a film. Such a cliché but they're clichés for a reason: because they are great!

Pandoralovegood · 18/12/2022 14:42

Vet bills, they have saved her life twice now and the furry little beast is still going strong. Thank god online pet pharmacy is so much cheaper than getting stuff from the vets though for her ongoing meds.

I do love Dr Marten boots and used to have several pairs in the 90,s when they were about £50-70 ,they were still expensive at the time but so worth it lasted for years ,sadly they are out of my price range now and can't justify the cost just for me but still love them.

@x2boys loads of DMs on Vinted - I sold a pair recently, in good condition (Not a fan of DMs)

Maddison12 · 18/12/2022 14:53

People saying laser eye surgery..

How much does it cost? Where did you have it done? Did you have any side effects? Would you recommend getting it done?

Would love to have laser eye surgery done as I'm very short sighted. But heard some horrendous horror stories so I chickened out 😬

Pandorapitstop · 18/12/2022 14:55

Mutti tinned tomatoes

stopbeeping · 18/12/2022 15:02

I use YSL touché eclat or whatever it's called?

Itstoocoldoutthere · 18/12/2022 15:03

My quooker tap
Merino silk nightwear
My cleaner

Benjispruce4 · 18/12/2022 15:04

@stopbeeping I used to. Try Trinny London BFF eye. It’s lush.

pocketvenuss · 18/12/2022 15:09

@thisisasurvivor Canada Goode no longer uses fur and only uses down sourced ethically. The people spoke and they listened. Why are you still boycotting them?

pocketvenuss · 18/12/2022 15:12

@Cactusprick @blisstwins you need to keep up. The people spoke and they listened. They no longer use fur and their down is ethically sourced. That's more than many other brands do. Why are you boycotting a brand who did the right thing?

BashfulClam · 18/12/2022 15:17

Decent shoes and boots. When I didn’t have as much money I had sore, wet feet throughout winter. When I was young my parents didn’t have much money either so i now make an investment in decent shies and boots every year. Having dry feet the last few years has been such a nice feeling.

This isn't exactly true though is it? I went on to their website a few mins ago and they're still selling fur.

What Canada Goose have done is stop buying fur at the end of last year and won't manufacture using fur from the end of this year. They're still using fur now and still selling it.

And don't kid yourself that the decision to "do the right thing" is anything other than commercial.

Our new to us car. It's a 64 plate Freelander 2 and the amount of wonderful things on it is amazing, the heated seats alone are a revelation.

Have you found the winter wiper setting yet? Hold down the wiper arm when you press the stop engine button and the wipers come up on the screen so when you turn on the heated screen it defrosts them.

Mine is going in March for an electric mini, but it is a very clever car.

pocketvenuss · 18/12/2022 15:32

@HundredMilesAnHour I don't care what the motivations are. I don't know the motivations of the other eleventy billion manufacturers out there so why would I treat CG harsher? I suspect most manufacturers make decisions for commercial reasons. They have decided to do the right thing. That's a good thing. Not a negative. The power of consumers voting with their purse. And yes. End 2022. Which is kind of now

Unfortunately they did wrong for a period of time so I don’t like them as a brand any longer. That’s fair enough.

longtompot · 18/12/2022 15:35

@RoyFuckingKent I think I read about that in the manual but I don't think dh has tried that yet. Probably could have done with knowing that this past week🤔 He loves his heated steering wheel

ArabianLeopardCub · 18/12/2022 15:49

Molton brown shower gel and Molton Brown travel fragrances and atomiser.

FairlyIncognito · 18/12/2022 16:05

NewToWoo · 17/12/2022 21:14

Cashmere sweaters. Cost £100-200 each about 8 years ago. Still good as new and so warm that I don't need to turn the heating up.

You must be so good at looking after it, I no longer buy cashmere as ours succumbs to either being shrunk , eaten by moths or getting holes some other way within months! My concession is cashmere gloves as so warm but they do always have holes in

Benjispruce4 · 18/12/2022 16:07

Have bought DH a Molton Brown bar soap in black pepper. He loves the shower gel as a treat but we switched to bar soap a couple of years ago and wouldn’t go back. Not I. The spirit of this thread but the magnetic bar soap holders are cheap but fabulous.

Benjispruce4 · 18/12/2022 16:11

Walking boots. I have Peter Storm Snowden boots since I got a dog and they are the best thing ever. Leather but waterproof and so warm. Bought some for DH for Christmas after I raved about them. No weather has been too much for them.
