I bought a JOIE 360° car seat which at the time seemed extortionate but when I look at how much ease it has given me over the years I think it was worth every penny.
Ditto expensive Dr Marten boots.

AIBU to ask what you've considered expensive when you bought it but in hindsight realised was worth it?

Have to say this thread is uncomfortable reading given the cost of living crisis

feels … smug ?

I don't think that's fair. I started out with nothing 20 years ago, sleeping on a mattress on the floor of a flat with no heating. My take was that the thread was about things that are worth buying that are good quality so will last which in the long run can save money and is more environmentally friendly. Nobody's saying anybody should go out and buy all of this stuff in one go!

I'm enjoying reading this thread, seeing things I may or may not consider for future purchases. I don't have a need for every one nor have the budget for some.

I do find it really annoying that there are posters who come on a pleasant, easy going thread to pick apart other people's choices, due to tone deafness or being unethical.

Are you this judgy to your friends and family or do you save it for when you can be on an anonymous thread?

I do speak out against foie gras, cashmere, down etc in RL. We might as well be farming and wearing fur. I inherited furs from my GM, there is nothing warmer. If people were posting about the furs they had bought, there'd be backlash.

Coffeetree · 18/12/2022 11:01

The Fold work wear. I have a couple of dresses and blazers. They are as comfortable as pyjamas but also look really structured and formal. Very spiffy, formal enough to wear in court. They wear well, too. Definitely worth the initial outlay.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 18/12/2022 11:03

please don't do this!

Twiglets1 · 18/12/2022 11:06

I’m enjoying reading this thread and it’s making me smile to think of people enjoying their luxury items or services- there’s so much doom & gloom in the world it’s lovely to talk about happier things for once!
Sorry if not everyone can afford luxury items (I can’t afford some of the things people have mentioned but fair play to those that can). It’s supposed to be a light hearted thread so let’s try to keep it that way.

SittingStillAgain · 18/12/2022 11:07

Real sheepskin slippers. Toasty warm, not sweaty and you can put them in the washing machine and they come up like new. I've had 3 pairs in about 20 years.

mrsg2019 · 18/12/2022 11:09

Best -
Childcare
Cleaner
Ghd straighteners
A good retinol and spf

Worst - mulberry Amberley oxblood bag. Mine is not that old and is really scratched. I have a toddler and am very clumsy though Blush

SnowlayRoundabout · 18/12/2022 11:11

Mini iPad. I dithered for ages about getting it, but the first time I took it on holiday it really justified itself - I didn't have to pack books, it had local maps and details of local attractions, I put films and podcasts onto it for the journey, used it for taking photos, and general netsurfing. It's brilliant.

Campervan
Dog
Good quality mattress, mattress topper and bedding
Salomon walking boots for my slightly wide feet
Rohan troggers (SO comfy on long walks!)
A Joules down filled coat that has lasted years- initially as a 'good' coat now perfect for fog walking and machine washes really well
A varied and interesting range of foods to cook from scratch
Shark cordless - best vac we've had and deals with dog hair brilliantly (Dyson cordless was rubbish in comparison)
Home maintenance- we live in a large old house and have had our lovely handyman for a few years now.

SuffolkUnicorn · 18/12/2022 11:22

I'm really loving this thread, reading everyone's little bits of luxury. We've recently gotten our family to a place of finally being able to purchase nice more expensive items, so the ideas are really welcome. Currently looking at buying some merino thermals for hubby for Christmas.

I must say I did feel very "posh" buying Starbucks hot chocolate mix in Asda the other week, simply delicious. Nowhere near as expensive as some of the items listed here but really made me feel that we had turned a corner in our life. 10 years ago we were homeless at one point with 2 kids, such tough times we have had.

So - my things apart from the Starbucks hot chocolate:

My education - expensive, but worth it for what it now provides.
Our little house 🏠 which I adore, needs plenty of work, but we are never moving again
Our dog - she brings us all such joy.
Our Dyson hoover has been fab and 20 years later is still going.
Stand mixer - simply love it
Separate tumble dryer - awesome in this weather with a family of 5

I procrastinated for ages over spending £250 on a Jack Wolfskin 3 in 1 waterproof jacket it was half price when I eventually bought it (I needed it everyday as I used to cycle to school.

I'd never had a 3 in 1 and the liner turned out to be mostly too hot so bought a lighter one and a gilet, so it ended up being quite a lot if I wanted to replace

Its 9 years old and still looks good might not be as waterproof

And yes to Arcteryx, OH has a few and they are really worth it

LaBellina · 18/12/2022 11:35

Chanel or Maison Margiela Perfume
Marriage Frères tea
Coach handbag (got it second hand but it’s still costly)

LaBellina · 18/12/2022 11:36

Also Ugg home slippers. Pure, pure bliss.

TildaRae · 18/12/2022 11:37

A set of pro cook pans…. Make cooking a joy now! Definitely worth the expense.

Burgoo · 18/12/2022 11:37

Add a good mattress to the list from me too.

I used to sleep on this mattress with springs sticking out all over the place. I had barely slept for a decade, then got a new high end one and not had a problem since and I feel much better in the daytimes and able to focus at work. Can't ask for more IMO.

High quality furniture is also one that I don't buy as much of as I should. I go for IKEA every time and either 1) bits break off in assembly 2) moving it is a bitch because once you move it it falls to bits or you can't get it back together!

Astrabees · 18/12/2022 11:38

Brora cashmere, for me it needs to be in the sale or secondhand but I have had some of my pieces for well over 10 years now and they get better with age.

whumpthereitis · 18/12/2022 11:42

The knives discussion made me think of the Tamahagane set I bought. Amazing, best ones I’ve ever owned.

Schoffel coat.
A Mugler blazer.
Dyson hairdryer.
Business or first class on long haul.
Nemo Paris perfume.

Hubcapdiamondstarhalo · 18/12/2022 11:42

Delcor and Multiyork sofas that we bought 30 and 26 years ago respectively. Planning on replacing them next year but they've had a good long run.
