I bought a JOIE 360° car seat which at the time seemed extortionate but when I look at how much ease it has given me over the years I think it was worth every penny.
Ditto expensive Dr Marten boots.

AIBU to ask what you've considered expensive when you bought it but in hindsight realised was worth it?

Divorce.

@Justmuddlingalong - I hope this doesn’t offend but I spat my tea out at this!

ancientgran · 18/12/2022 09:59

Four kids but I didn't think of the 4 partners and 6 GC and growing. Christmas has got very expensive.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 18/12/2022 10:00

@Andsoforth you make a very good point about it being cheaper in the long run to be able to afford the best quality items, but that less well off members of society can't afford that initial outlay so spend more overall. "Buy cheap, buy twice" as the saying goes. I'm a bit uncomfortable with these sorts of threads too for that reason.

The good thing is that with ebay and Vinted etc, people have half a chance of picking up bargains and owning expensive items at a fraction of the cost.

Expensive perfume is not worth the money. They spend far more on branding than the actual perfume.

I find that most cheaper perfumes smell chemical and weird on me. Even some more expensive ones do, too (Rive Gauche especially - lovely on other people, smells like toilet cleaner when I wear it).

Guerlain perfumes never seem to do that, neither do most Dior scents, so I stick to those now.

I also find this is more of problem with more modern perfumes. Old favourites are fine, but Flower Bomb smells like cheap sweets, as do all versions of Daisy that I've tried.

Have to say this thread is uncomfortable reading given the cost of living crisis

feels … smug ?

I don't think that was OP's intention to be fair. There are one or two boasty posters, but many of things mentioned are not massively expensive and some will have been bought years ago, like the boots and coat mentioned.

Cleaner. She makes my life 1000x easier, she goes above and beyond (this week she took it upon herself to wash all my make up brushes!!) she has been with us for years and I love her. Multiple dogs (I need my cleaner because of them but they are the BEST thing in my life). Fisher Paykell dishwasher drawer. Boiling/chilled/sparking water tap. Horribly expensive to buy but I use it 20 times a day.

How does the sparking element of your tap fare? DH drinks a LOT of sparking water, but the soda streams don’t last as well as you’d hope (2 in 10 years) and the canisters can be tricky to get hold of. New kitchen next year and seriously considering it.

ronaldthefeline · 18/12/2022 10:06

@NewNovember baby was never once left unsupervised in her baby pod or left to sleep overnight but I'm afraid it was well worth every penny.

Baby is also 18m. So don't worry, I didn't cost my baby my life. Hmm

Tempur memory foam pillow
I was very lucky that a now ex partner bought me one for my birthday 18 years ago. Every night I enjoy putting my head on it, I love it. Just as well it was a present as it would cost me over a day's wages if I had to buy it myself now!

2 in 10 years is amazing frankly! You need a big space for the sparkling water box.

I'm enjoying reading this thread, seeing things I may or may not consider for future purchases. I don't have a need for every one nor have the budget for some.

I do find it really annoying that there are posters who come on a pleasant, easy going thread to pick apart other people's choices, due to tone deafness or being unethical.

Are you this judgy to your friends and family or do you save it for when you can be on an anonymous thread?

PonyPatter44 · 18/12/2022 10:20

My divorce

Cashmere / merino jumpers

Super-wide-calf knee length boots from the Netherlands (cost almost as much in duty as the boots themselves cost, but they are AMAZING)

Bacon and sausages from the local farm shop. Minimal food miles, traceability, high welfare standards, and taste good. Supermarket bacon is the pits at the moment, even Waitrose's!

MillyMollyManky · 18/12/2022 10:21

My Smythson diary. It has the perfect layout for me and withstands heavy use (in and out of bags etc) without any issue. It is my most used item and I buy one every year.

I offended a flouncer poster upthread suggesting that instead of owning a large plastic unit to seal their cat's poo in individual plastic-wrapped portions, they could buy corn litter and flush it. Some people might not know about this and it makes our cat-owning much simpler, it helps to have choices. And in real life it's not always easy/polite to say hey, that's not that green/ethical you k'now so it is useful to be able to say on here. Not necessarily judgey-pants.

I’d agree with apple products. I’ve had various MacBooks since studying at university and all have been reliable. Same with the phones. It just works for me.

Mulberry Alexa. My perfect handbag. Perfect size and style for me.

Mac eyeliner. A reasonably recent discovery. I was sceptical of its staying power but it really did last.

I guess being a single parent cost me a lot - but was so worth it.

But materially my Peloton Bike plus - worth every penny.

Window cleaner. We have a lot of glass. He does all my windows, inside and out, and the whole house seems brighter. It takes me ages between visits and I always miss spots or find streaks.

@HootOwlStrikesAgain do you have the details of the Italian shoe company?

I've not ordered for years now as they last forever! But I have 3 pairs in different styles. All beautifully made and a perfect fit.

Can anyone recommend a good quality knife?

Global knives are the very best. They will literally last a lifetime, and need to be left to someone else in your will!

As a teenage mum in the 1970s I adjusted to never spending any money on me that wasn't essential. I struggle to change but I have an urge to buy a Ninja saucepan set. Is it mad?
