I bought a JOIE 360° car seat which at the time seemed extortionate but when I look at how much ease it has given me over the years I think it was worth every penny.
Ditto expensive Dr Marten boots.

AIBU to ask what you've considered expensive when you bought it but in hindsight realised was worth it?

On a lighter note, those who mentioned Xmas bedding, can anyone recommend anything good for a superking! I should have sorted this ages ago but this thread has inspired me!

I really like the weight and balance of Porsche knives. It’s something worth shopping for in person so you can feel them before you buy.

Have to say this thread is uncomfortable reading given the cost of living crisis

feels … smug ?

Quoting Terry Pratchett

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

I’m hoping someone has said a Sage bean to cup machine. I’ve bought one for my dh for Christmas and I winced at the price of it.

Can’t believe people are so naive to not realise that just about everything in this world is unethical. How people love to jump on the band wagon they clearly know nothing about!

The people that have commented on the Canada Goose purchase haven’t actually bragged about any purchases though, let alone the most unethical ones 🙃🙃

OliverBabish · 18/12/2022 09:38

Heating the house!

I feel very fortunate that I can absorb the cost at the moment to keep my children comfortable. We are working class so this is my priority right now.

I do love reading these threads as it’s nice to have nice things!

Being vegan is now a protected characteristic @Vegay ? 😁

Hmm no, it's covered under this existing protected characteristic of belief if it can be proved that being vegan is a deeply held philosophical belief to the individual.

I spent 200 quid on an electric waterbath for canning, to be honest a large pan would have done the job just as well

I bought a 9.5 litre instant pot for a couple ton in October. Loved it so much bought a smaller one the week after it was a tad cheaper. I really want a third now.

CompletelyConfusedMummy · 18/12/2022 09:45

A Dyson vacuum cleaner! Best thing ever if you want clean carpets.

Letsrunabath · 18/12/2022 09:47

Dubarry boots, really expensive initially but I’ve had mine 12 years they look awful but are still warm and waterproof. I’d buy another pair in an instant when they finally fall apart.

LakieLady · 18/12/2022 09:48

Philips Lumea.

My legs were so hairy they practically got a 5 o'clock shadow, and needed shaving every day (well, every day that anyone was likely to see them), they're completely hair-free now, as are my pits. I occasionally get a few new hairs sprouting, but one zap and they don't come back.

I was surprised to see Molton Brown shower gel mentioned upthread. I was given some last Christmas, and find it makes my skin so dry that I can only use it approx every 4th day. I reckon it's just scented washing up liquid.

Lovely fragrances though.

I have another...

Many years ago, when broke, in a fit of deep depression and not in my right mind, I bought a coat in Selfridges that cost me the equivalent of three months salary. I put it on my credit card. To date it is the single most expensive item of clothing I have ever bought.

I put it on whilst on the bus home and wore it a couple of days before I came to my senses and burst into desperate sobbing at what I had done. It would take me about a year to pay for it. I was already broke and in debt and owed thousands on credit.

The coat was a three-quarter length scarlet swing coat made of cashmere, and lined with silk, with a wide red velvet collar which could be turned back and buttoned up against the cold. It was very light but very warm, and could be worn all year.

It fitted my hourglass figure as though it were bespoke because it had a loose tie belt and was generously flared out at the hips. As the years went on, and I grew from a size 14 to a 20, it still fitted me. It was so beautifully made that it never lost its shape and never bobbled.

It was worth every penny I paid, because not only did I look and feel like like a million dollars in it, but the coat lasted me for 35 years. In the end my arms grew too fat for the sleeves, but it was in such good condition that I sold it on ebay for £25.

@Ladyof2022 This is brilliant to hear.

Not least as I’m eyeing up a very spendy- though sadly not as glorious sounding - coat at the moment.

IClaudine · 18/12/2022 09:52

My cat. Best £90 I ever spent (bought from a rescue).

Glittertrauma · 18/12/2022 09:54

Big Hunter 'intrepid' outdoor padded coat - nearly £300 but so worth it for cold dog walks, football matches etc
Charlotte Tilbury makeup. I use drugstore most of the time but can notice the difference
Botox and fillers - actually made a difference to my forehead wrinkles and baggy under eyes after years of spending on pricey creams that didn't do much

RosesAndHellebores · 18/12/2022 09:56
