Why is it taboo to discuss finances on mumsnet if your considered rich ?

don't want to make this a thread about a thread, but if your earning say around 90k etc, as an example why is it taboo to try to discuss spending priorities in the current climate ?

we live in a capitalist society, and their has always been different levels of wealth across all sectors of society,

So is it a case of everyone has to wait until a certain level has been achieved across society before the rich or perceived rich can discuss spending priorities on mumsnet ?

Many, many on here are on low or no income. This means there is a lot of bitterness towards those in a more favourable position financially.

Long gone are the days where MN was predominantly middle class, it’s not been that way for a good few years.

Hawkins001 · 17/12/2022 19:26

Unless you abolish being rich and make it so everyone has a set amount each,. their will always be various people's different levels of capital, it just seems almost taboo that you have to not ask just because their is always others that have different capital amounts.

That's what puzzles me,.It's almost like unless everyone is in the same boat, then you can discuss the topic, so then it's like when is it acceptable to discuss

I think many of us are simply astounded that someone earns 90k but doesn’t know the difference between your and you’re, and there and their. 🤷‍♀️

Sindonym · 17/12/2022 19:28

Of course you can. You can discuss anything you want. It’s just a bit tone death in the current climate given that this is a conversation that will he seen he people who are really struggling financially as well. Wrong audience and all that.

Cos some people can currently hardly eat or heat 🙄

alakwa · 17/12/2022 19:29

I have no problem with people discussing their finances.

I do object to those on large incomes making out they are poor!

If you are struggling in £90,000 you will have options to reduce your outgoings that those struggling in minimum wage could only dream of

Needarest22 · 17/12/2022 19:29

Also 90k not really rich in this day and age.....

I earn well in excess of that and don’t know my left and rights.

Sometimes you don’t need to be good at something to earn well

I can completely understand that perspectives, but that's always going to be similar situations, their will always be different levels of wealth. And mumsnet is ment to be a mix of those wealth levels via its member base.

So what's the alternative, none can discuss finances until all society is earning over x amout, then in that case how many years , if even at all can that even be achieved.

Since when did making £90k become RICH? 🤔🤔

teomama · 17/12/2022 19:31

Maybe lots of people don't feel comfortable with discussing their finances with strangers, whether they're on the lower or the higher range of earnings.

You are not allowed to talk about nice holidays either, even on the holidays board

It's like we all have to be part of a communist society where everyone is equal before anyone can discuss x

I have no idea why you have to discuss finances on mumsnet. If you must then do, but realise that you are going to be making some people feel a bit grim. And it doesn’t mean they are jealous either.

Would you stand in a mixed group with people you know are struggling and talk about how to spend wads of cash? Some do, but it always seems ignorant to me.

user2859453 · 17/12/2022 19:35

Though if you go to the property board you can speak of your huge property, massive kitchen, Quooker tap etc. very odd

It's a puzzledment, by human nature itself, their will always be some do well, some do great, some do different, some do x, so it's like why people try to try to minimise the debates by saying ect, not everyone can do x, ect it's like we always know but why should that prevent a discuss on it ?
