It seems to be rife! Basically, bad cold / flu like symptoms, chesty cough (not Covid) BUT, it hits you like a freight train for about a week, then you feel better for a few days BUT IT COMES BACK WORSE?

I can’t recall ever feeling this rough, and it’s not just me there are 13 children off school in my child’s class with the same thing, and the parents in the group chat saying similar although some lucky ducks have dodged it.

Wondering if this is happening everywhere or just in our wee village?

We have all had a bad cold before but the fact it goes and comes back is weird, it’s really dragging on now I’m into the third week of it.

Yabu - no such thing happening near us
Yanbu - it’s everywhere and I’m sick of it now

I can't be bothered driving source then but I'm pretty sure there are also studies that do indeed show people exposed to bugs regularly become ill less often (school staff etc). Anecdotally it's definitely the case with both dc and new staff who generally have a run of illness when first starting. Anyway I've only had covid once despite working in a very high exposure setting and in an age group where the precaution s were much more lax (we did not wear masks when working with dc as it was seen as detrimental to that age/stage) so I'm happy to crack on and get this run of bugs out the way as I'm sure will happen rather than walk about masked

Rosebel · 17/12/2022 06:31

Sounds like flu and just a really nasty strain of it.
We've not had that but DH DD1 and me have all had some sort of sickness in the last week (am praying it's over now and DD2 and DS don't come down with it.)
DS has been wiped out the last 2 week with a virus am not sure he's got the same thing as you though OP. Horrible cough, probably sore throat as drinking loads but not really eating and tired all the time but no idea if he has other symptoms because he's non verbal. 2 weeks in and it seems to be starting to get better. I hope it doesn't come back even worse.
Why does it always happen at Christmas?

HappinesDependsOnYou · 17/12/2022 06:32

Yes been ill for a month. Started with rsv (met someone who didn't tell us their kids had it and a few days later wham!) them strep a confirmed and now I feel like I have covid again although negative test. All 3 have been horrendous and I'm expecting Xmas to be miserable 😕

ferntwist · 17/12/2022 06:56

DD and I have both had it and it’s awful! Worst illness either of my DC has ever had. She was tested at hospital and it’s Influenza A - this season’s strain of the flu. Our GP told me it has been particularly virulent this year and characterised by appearing to go away, then coming back worse the next week.

Twizbe · 17/12/2022 07:36

It doesn't seem to have spread in our house. DD is now a bit snotty but not unwell. DH and DS are fine.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 17/12/2022 09:54

3 weeks and 5 days for me now and I'm still very congested with a lingering cough. Thought DD had got away with it but she started coughing early this week. She's still gone to school each day but now they have finally finished for Christmas she has slumped this morning with a hacking cough, feeling sick and temp of 38.

Bicurator · 17/12/2022 10:07

I got the conjunctivitis part too and annoyingly increased appetite

Threadkillacilla · 17/12/2022 10:25

Eurgh just got a BFP on a lateral flow. Woohoo my first covid Sad

Donkeyotey · 16/12/2022 17:55

I've had it for about 3 weeks! Got better then got a lot worse a few days ago. Coughing fits so bad that I retch. Tight chest like someone is sitting on it. Fever started a few days ago. Weird clicking in my ears. I'm so fed up!

Just following up on this to say I just did a test and it's Covid. I have done two other tests in the last couple of weeks and they were both negative.

The description you quote sounds like Covid 101 to me.

Just wanted to pop back in to give people a bit of advice. DH got this on Sunday and has been ill with it all week. As he has a penis he hasn’t contacted the doctor. He’s not been getting much better. This morning his watch alerted him to an irregular heart rhythm, afib. Tried to call 111 and got cut off after an hour on hold.
We ended up in A&E where he was rushed into resus and ended up on a drip and with loads of drugs to get his heart back to a regular rhythm. He tested negative for Covid and flu. If he hadn’t have had the alerts from his watch then we wouldn’t have known how serious it was.

Oh my goodness! Are you ok? Must have been utterly terrifying. I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Have the doctors given any indication to what this might be?

Thanks so much for the update x

This is another strain of covid, has to be

Cornelious · 17/12/2022 20:45

I started to feel unwell on Monday with a head cold, which progressed to aching bones: shivers. Hot water bottles were my saviour. Then towards end of week the cough came. Woke up this morning and chest killing me, every cough was like razor blades. I had a fresh course of anti biotics that I never started for a sore throat last month. Since taking the tablets today my chest has cleared so much already. I burst into tears twice this morning with the pain./ breathlessness and dizziness.

Hopefully everyone feels better soon x

MollyQueenOfSocks · 17/12/2022 20:50

I caught it the week of Halloween and i've not been right since. Was awful over Halloween, even Covid wasn't as bad. Then got "better" but still had low level cold symptoms with a slight cough/clogged throat. 2 weeks later I got very sick yet again, because "better" but not really yet again then DH got sick a week or so ago and needed antibiotics.

I am still not well. Not terrible but it's sitting in my chest and my nose is stuffy. Just waiting for it to hit again as the kids are now sick with bad coughs (not strep).

TearsNReindeers · 17/12/2022 20:57

Three weeks in for me. Heavy cold and cough, and weird fevers that come on for an hour or two and then I feel a bit better again for a while.

I’ve managed to power through with work, although really should’ve stayed at home on some days, but I woke up this morning with a pounding headache and feel like I’ve got full on flu now. Covid tests negative. It’s miserable.

boatyardblues · 17/12/2022 20:58

Bicurator · 16/12/2022 20:16

Has anyone else had a sore/swollen throat for weeks?

🙋‍♀️ I’m nearing the three week mark. The unfolding kaleidoscope of headache and exhaustion, dizziness, dry cough, then productive cough, sinus pain and so on has settled. The sore throat just won’t die. I’m so fed up of it all.

H1Drangea · 17/12/2022 20:59

I took a covid test ( on day 9 ) negative
still feel bloody awful though

Amybelle88 · 17/12/2022 20:59

My poor little girl had the legs took from under her and she's not a sickly child at all. It's like the flu on acid.

boatyardblues · 17/12/2022 21:00

Actually, I lie. I was coughing again yesterday (dry) and I’m snotty again today. Fun!

ProserpinaProserpina · 17/12/2022 21:05

I think I’ve got it now! Felt really tired and under the weather for about a week then got a high temperature and felt a bit cold-ish at the start of the week, then got terrible sinus pain mid-week, yesterday started to feel a bit better, and now have got a terrible cough again. I can’t tell if I’ve had multiple viruses in a short time frame or if I’ve just had one prolonged bastard thing.

H1Drangea · 17/12/2022 21:11

I’m back on the coughing , with the added joy of nosebleeds

wrappednotasinglegiftyet · 17/12/2022 21:13

So I have had a weird bug, not as awful as some of you, but horrible and odd! Have had covid twice before, nothing like this (both times like a bad cold with a bit of extra tiredness but not extreme). I had my flu and extra covid booster, am under 40 and generally well on a normal day! Done a LFT every day for nearly a week now and all negative.

Day one woke up badly aching all over and with a terrible headache. Got up and showered, was so exhausted by it that I got back into bed still wet and stayed there all day. DH had to wake me to give me a drink and take some paracetamol. Had a fever.

Day two, not quite as severe aches but still there and awful head. Same exhaustion plus stomach cramps and the most disgusting wind (sorry) ever. Fever gone.

Day three, Still in bed all day but able to eat and drink a little bit. Upset tummy, cramps/wind.

Day four, sniffly nose and slight cough to go with exhaustion which was lessening but still enough for me to spend most of the day on the sofa. Tummy still iffy/painful

Day five, Pain all gone but still slightly dodgy and unpleasant tummy. Sniffly with slight cough. Ringing ears and dizziness. Still exhausted

Day six (today) Out of bed and more 'on my feet' but still very tired/wiped out easily. Tummy fine, but still no appetite. Slight sniffle, tiny cough. Still ringing ears and slight dizziness. Dizziness connected to movement (like labyrinthitus, not 'from not eating' dizziness)

I have felt rotten! But it doesn't seem coldy enough to be flu. No proper cold just a bit of a runny nose. No sore throat, no stuffy sinuses, no phlegm or bad cough. Not covid, tested six days in a row. But my god the fatigue, the aches, the grim stomach, the dizziness. I have not been sick like this for over a decade I don't think and honestly my immune system is pretty robust - I have young primary and preschool age children so I am exposed to every bloody bug there is!!

I hope it's well on its way out, and I sent get well soon wishes to you all!

boatyardblues · 17/12/2022 21:14

I forgot to say that I had the rolling nausea (week 1) and earache (week 2) too. It’s a really unpleasant bug. I’m strangely reassured to hear that others have had dizziness with this bug. It freaked me out.

Nicknack8888 · 17/12/2022 21:16

I'm almost 5 weeks in, some days ok, some days in bed 😭 hoping to be ok for Christmas 🤞🏻🤞🏻
