Radiator in kitchen

I had an incident yesterday and needed my neighbour's help. He noticed I had a radiator in the kitchen and said it was unusual. I said every house I have lived in has had a radiator in the kitchen. He's saying no one he knows has a radiator in their kitchen.
So AIBU to ask if you have a radiator in your kitchen?

I do

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/12/2022 22:00

Yes I do. I don’t think I’ve lived in one that doesn’t.. I live in Scotland - I need a radiator in every room!

Yabado · 15/12/2022 22:06

Yes I have one large one and 2 plinth heaters

SilverGlassHare · 15/12/2022 22:10

Ours does but the small terraced house I grew up in had the kitchen in the side return and was unheated. It was always freezing unless the oven was on.

Ivesaidenough · 15/12/2022 22:12

I don't have one. It's really cold!

StrawberryWater · 15/12/2022 22:19

Never had a radiator in any of my kitchens. My last house desperately needed one though as it was far too cold in there.

My current house doesn't need one as the back reception room and kitchen are open plan there are plenty of heat sources (3 if you include the oven. See pic below) and an extra radiator would overheat the place. I like it warm, not tropical.

We don’t and thought it was strange not to as it’s freezing, especially as it has a tiled floor!

MakingNBaking · 15/12/2022 22:33

I do, it's under the breakfast bar where nobody sits and there are no stools. So I lean on the breakfast bar and warm my bits.
Luckily, said breakfast bar overlooks the sitting room and I can see the telly so I hang out there a lot. It's like my standing sofa.

@AuntyMabelandPippin

Kitchens don't need radiators, if it's absolutely freezing, put a gas ring on for five minutes and that'll sort it.

Many people don't have gas hobs.

HollaHolla · 15/12/2022 23:10

I did. But removed it to put in a dishwasher in my very narrow tenement kitchen! It was never on, as with cooking, etc.
I don’t miss it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SKIPWAY · 15/12/2022 23:12

Previous owners had taken it out I've just put it back in! Only houses I have been in without one have that I can think off are old farmhouse kitchens with an aga.

It’s not even a sensible solution either. This site’s collective IQ drops on a daily basis I swear.

CrownTheTurkey · 15/12/2022 23:17

Yes. I have a large double one under the breakfast bar and a smaller double one by the back door.

Same. We’ve had ice on our back door most of the day, horrendous. If we ever have enough money to make our shitty house better I’m 100% getting a rad in there 🥶

Firkinhavinalaugh · 15/12/2022 23:18

Our “master” radiator (whatever the duck that meant) was in the kitchen.

we currently have two rads in our kitchen/diner

stayathomer · 15/12/2022 23:19

We do but it’s an old house and all the ones I can think of that have them are old too? Could this be it?

Pelo22 · 15/12/2022 23:21

No radiator. It's open plan and there's one in the living room but it's not really enough as one radiator for a big room

SingingSands · 15/12/2022 23:37

I do. It's a great big radiator perfect for leaning my bum on when it's a cold morning and I'm waiting for the kettle to boil.

TheTeenageYears · 15/12/2022 23:49

I was about to say always but thinking back to a small 2 bed new build in the 90's I don't think it did. Small kitchen with cabinets/room for appliances on 3 sides of the room and door on the 4th. If there was a small radiator on that 4th wall it would have been very close to area for fridge freezer so don't think there can have been. The boiler was in there and there was a hall radiator directly opposite the door so I think that's probably why I don't remember it ever feeling cold without one. Kick board heaters are quite common as space savers in kitchens as is underfloor heating so even if there isn't a visible radiator in a kitchen it doesn't necessarily mean there isn't a source of heat.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 24/12/2022 20:41

@EcafTnuc
Thank you so much for your kind words there. I'm talking about a kitchen, not an entire house. To warm a kitchen, a gas ring, or an electric ring worked for all four of my houses.

TheHateIsNotGood · 24/12/2022 20:52

Yes in most places I've lived in with central heating installed, the exception being a property with central heating upstairs only, but the kitchen was warm with the rayburn that heated it.

I now live in another older property that has central heating including a rather archaic rad in the small kitchen. It definitely gets warmer in there when I use the oven - alas no rayburn now.

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/12/2022 21:14

We do, but it was inherited when we moved in and I think it's bloody weird. We have to leave it off because it's in proximity to the fridge.

I've never seen a radiator in a kitchen before, with the exception of when the kitchen is massive and also technically has a dining area or similar. I do really want to get ours removed but it's one of those jobs where there are bigger priorities if we have spare cash and it's technically inoffensive enough.

Glittertwins · 24/12/2022 22:56

No, I've never lived in a house, with a radiator in the kitchen.

KimberleyClark · 24/12/2022 23:03

Yes we have one in our kitchen. The 1950s house I grew up in didn’t have one though, it had a wall mounted bar heater.

RuthW · 24/12/2022 23:09
