To advocate for DD having a double bed?

DD is in a cot currently, but will soon be moving into her own bed

I want to give her a double bed, H thinks it's ridiculously OTT?

Now, hear me out on this... I spent ages looking at all the super pretty Little White company fairy bedding sets, and couldn't wait to do all of that

But they don't come in double size and I think she might be more comfy in a double?

Who doesn't want a double over a single bed anyway?

H thinks I'm mad but says 'you do you darling'

Would you give your toddler a double bed? AIBU?

I know some people who have done this, tends to be families where they end up sharing beds anyway so makes it more comfortable for parents when they have to sleep in child's bed! For me the downside is taking up too much space but if there's plenty of room....

DashboardConfessional · 13/12/2022 15:42

No, because I'd rather there was more floorspace for playing.

spangleswereace · 13/12/2022 15:43

We got our wee girl a double when she moved out her cot, best thing we did!
Took her a while to settle after moving from the cot and it helped that we could lie beside her to settle her, was also needed when she was ill and one of us had to sleep beside her.
I'd definitely say to go for it!!

nokidshere · 13/12/2022 15:44

Depends entirely on the room surely? If you have a large enough space then go for it.

Lkydfju · 13/12/2022 15:45

My DD has had a double bed since she was 4 due to various circumstances and it does make it much easier when she’s poorly and I sleep in with her but I can’t say she’s bothered either way and it does mean she has less room to play in her room

Quitornot · 13/12/2022 15:46

I would, if there's space. It means it's easier to move people around if needed for guests or illness.

Buy a really good frame and it should last her right through. She'll be asking for a double in 10-12 years anyway.

lanthanum · 13/12/2022 15:46

Plenty of us survived our entire childhood/teenage years in 2'6" beds, let alone ordinary singles. I never noticed any discomfort (except when they were bunked and I was on the bottom).
Giving kids double beds seems to be a new thing - but how do they cope when they go off to uni and only have a single?

I can see the sense in buying a double if occasionally your child is turfed out of their room when grandparents come to stay, but otherwise wouldn't they rather have the floor space?

Saltywalruss · 13/12/2022 15:46

She is only one person. A single bed has plenty of space for one person, even an adult one!

carefulcalculator · 13/12/2022 15:46

I wouldn't because learning to sleep in a single is useful and you lose all the floor space. They feel/look a bit lost in a single at first quite often, like Mrs Pepperpot in a double!

I agree with your DH on this one.

amicissimma · 13/12/2022 15:46

What's your laundry situation? Washing double bedding is more of a pain than single. And I'd much rather wrestle a single duvet into its cover.

Hugasauras · 13/12/2022 15:48

We have a double for DD. Much comfier if one of us has to sleep in when she's poorly, much more versatile for guests if we need too. We have a large playroom so bedroom is never used for playing anyway.

upfucked · 13/12/2022 15:48

My kids have small doubles. We are cosleeps, although they don’t cosleep now but it’s great for when they are ill and you need to stay with them through the night eg vomiting bug. Randomly I found ASDA do some quirky double duvet covers which are great for kids.

catbirddogchild · 13/12/2022 15:48

Nope. Because when they go off to uni and fined themselves in a single bed in halls, how will they cope??? 😂
Sorry I just don't get why children need double beds now.
But honestly it doesn't matter, if that's what you want to do and they have the space in their room just do it.

Askinforabaskin · 13/12/2022 15:48

That’s what I am planning on doing. I figure that it will be better on the occasion when I end up sharing with them.

me and DP have a super king, so DD can always share with us on the odd occasion and we can give the double to visitors.

its slightly less floor space but my thought was she’ll mostly be playing downstairs anyway

Hugasauras · 13/12/2022 15:49

We like big beds in this house though! Ours is a super king and a double feels small to me now.

Starlight86 · 13/12/2022 15:49

My DDs have a double bed, reason being, first DD we bought a cot, then a toddler bed, then a single bed and then a double bed. We realized we wasted so much money on bloody beds.

So for DD2 we had a cot then straight into a double bed, they love it, share beds on occasion and if they need us ( unwell etc) we can hop into their bed with no issues.

Double beds will take them right up to teenager and beyond.

If you have the space/money go for a double bed

CatherinedeBourgh · 13/12/2022 15:49

Mine have always had double beds, when they were tiny I often ended up in their beds which was a lot easier than bringing them into mine...

Hugasauras · 13/12/2022 15:50

Toddler beds are the biggest con going. DD did two nights in hers, fell out both times and couldn't fit her cuddly toys in with her and I had to perch awkwardly to try and read her a story.

stackhead · 13/12/2022 15:51

We gave DD a double when she moved out of the cot bed for 2 reasons:

  1. Shes a wiggle arse and frequently ends up the wrong way round, backwards, sidewards and all over the place. She'd fall out of a single constantly.
  2. We have to lie with her for her to sleep, it's WAY more comfortable doing it in a bed than on the floor.

Although DD's is classed as a 'small double' so not a full sized double, like a 3/4 bed.

No real floor space, but DD is an only and all her toys are in the living room. I don't really see that changing anytime soon, but if it does she can have the spare room which currently has a single day bed in it.

SallyWD · 13/12/2022 15:51

If you have soiace why not? Lots of teenagers want double beds. It'll save you buying another bed further down the line. We stupidly bought a toddler bed that was only used for 2 years.

HollyBerri · 13/12/2022 15:51

I works go for the double if you have the space. Much better for story reading, co sleeping and sleepovers for her as she gets older.
i don’t see why people have an issue with it?

Mine has a double bed (a small double so 4ft I think?) it's great! Best thing we ever did!

SirenSays · 13/12/2022 15:54

I think it depends on your child. Bad sleepers that want you in with them, then a double makes more sense. Good sleepers who will want the space to run around and play, then opt for a single.
