To advocate for DD having a double bed?

xhelper · 13/12/2022 15:40

DD is in a cot currently, but will soon be moving into her own bed

I want to give her a double bed, H thinks it's ridiculously OTT?

Now, hear me out on this... I spent ages looking at all the super pretty Little White company fairy bedding sets, and couldn't wait to do all of that

But they don't come in double size and I think she might be more comfy in a double?

Who doesn't want a double over a single bed anyway?

H thinks I'm mad but says 'you do you darling'

Would you give your toddler a double bed? AIBU?

Depends how much space you have. We have loads so DS had a double from about 3 and has had a kingsize since he was 13. He absolutely loves it.

If you have a big house, why not. If the room is small and if you have no separate playroom then maybe stick with a single.

You can use a single duvet in a double bed :-)

SamanthaVimes · 13/12/2022 17:10

My 2yo has a double bed, it’s great for when one of us needs to go in with her if she’s ill or something. We do have separate space downstairs to play though so bedroom is just for sleep.

Blocked · 13/12/2022 17:10

My kids have gone from cot to doubles. It just seems sensible if you have the space why not? You can always put a single quilt on if you want the fairy duvet covers.

electricmoccasins · 13/12/2022 17:15

My daughter went from cot bed to double bed around two. Great for if she’s ever ill so I can just bunk up with her. Also sleepovers with friends or her cousin. I do miss the extra floor space though.

Rainbowdrops2021 · 13/12/2022 17:17

Our dd has a double bed but she just so happens to have a very large room (not a big house just generously sized bedrooms) I think if your dd will still have a good amount of floor space to play then go for it. A double bed is really handy when they’re sick or even just when you want to cuddle and read together ect.

wildthingsinthenight · 13/12/2022 17:23

If you have plenty of space then I think it's a good idea

OhamIreally · 13/12/2022 17:28

What about a small double?

ShaunaTheSheep · 13/12/2022 17:30

Well, a double is only 12" wider than a single, so I wouldn't overthink it if you have the space.

kitcat15 · 13/12/2022 17:35

very individual decision…my oldest 2 GD both have double beds ( ages nearly 7 and nearly4) …..they’ve got big bedrooms so have space….so why not

Cosycover · 13/12/2022 17:35

Yep my 2 got doubles.
Their rooms are big enough to take them and DH and I inevitably end up in with them. So made sense.

That’s wrong🙄

What's your laundry situation? Washing double bedding is more of a pain than single. And I'd much rather wrestle a single duvet into its cover.

A thousand times this.

I had an antique 2.6'' bed til I left home..
Obviously have a double now, but still only sleep on the edge of it!

The6thQueen · 13/12/2022 17:39

I’m at a genuine loss as to why it matters what size of bed anyone sleeps
in. Why can a toddler (or anyone for that matter) not have a double bed? Why is that reserved only for adults? It’s such a bizarre thing to judge others for! Surely not many people go into your family bedrooms, so who cares? If you want a double/king or super king, just go for it. Genuinely wouldn’t occur to me to judge another person’s bed choice.

Those of you who think a child/teenager doesn’t need a double etc.?, when does it become appropriate? What’s the magic number? Would you judge an adult for having a single bed, or would you just shrug and say none of my business?

MilkyYay · 13/12/2022 17:43

The people i know who do this share/co-sleep with their child a lot.

I'm not a big fan of giving children double beds. A double bed is for two people.

It can make for spoiled adults who can't sleep unless starfishing in a huge space.... who then get a shock when their student room only has a single, or their first flat/budget doesn't stretch to a superking and they need to share a double with a partner.

Not to mention its totally unecessary, a child is perfectly comfy in a normal single.

That's a good point re getting used to a small bed.
As I spent the first 17 yrs of my life in a tiny 2'6'' bed, I am used to sleeping in a small space..
At someone's 40th recently, I had a camp bed, as narrow as anything, but was able to manage as never got used to ''Starfishing''.

MilkyYay · 13/12/2022 17:48

Also i know very few people in the UK with large enough rooms to fit a double, other furniture and still have plenty of space for a child to play. I think its a weird choice to prioritise a young child having a double bed over space to play.

Who made this rule up? I'd have a double minimum if I was single.

And not everyone goes to uni. If they do, having a single bed is one of many things that will be different.

The OP has asked for options. Having a different opinion to someone else is not "judging".

AWaferThinMint · 13/12/2022 17:50

Mine both have double beds. They love it. Great for sleepovers. Great if they need one of us in the night. Great if you have guests as my kids squeeze in together and guests get one of their rooms. Win.

The6thQueen · 13/12/2022 17:50

Really, @MilkyYay; double beds are only for two people? So should single adults who
live in their own home, only be allowed to
buy a single bed? I’m 5’6 and my husband is 5’10, we have a super king - is that too big for us, we don’t need that much space, we just like it, should we downsize?!

I had a single bed in halls at uni, two of my friends on the same corridor had doubles. In my second year, when we lived in our own house, I had the most lovely king size bed.
How ridiculous to decide for other people what size bed they should sleep in!

Testina · 13/12/2022 17:51

Odd use of the word advocate.

If you’re really so devastated you can’t get that White Company duvet in a double, then just buy 2 (or that + plain fabric) and make a double.

Perfect28 · 13/12/2022 17:51

My son is in a double mattress on the floor. It looks a little crack den vibe but it's immensely practical so I say do it. You'll have to upgrade when she's a teen anyway!

The6thQueen · 13/12/2022 17:51

The comments about a double bed being ridiculous etc. for toddlers is definitely judgemental!

Benjispruce4 · 13/12/2022 17:53

DD18 had a double bed for age 15-18. Has just asked for a single as she wants more space!
