To advocate for DD having a double bed?

xhelper · 13/12/2022 15:40

DD is in a cot currently, but will soon be moving into her own bed

I want to give her a double bed, H thinks it's ridiculously OTT?

Now, hear me out on this... I spent ages looking at all the super pretty Little White company fairy bedding sets, and couldn't wait to do all of that

But they don't come in double size and I think she might be more comfy in a double?

Who doesn't want a double over a single bed anyway?

H thinks I'm mad but says 'you do you darling'

Would you give your toddler a double bed? AIBU?

If you have the space it's brilliant. Plenty of room to snuggle up for story, or when they are ill, lots of room for pillowfights or when they fill the bed with books.

depends if you need the floorspace.

Why would I want a double sheet and not a double bed?

I'm referring to the whinging about washing and drying bedding.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/12/2022 22:09

DS has had a double bed since he was about 5. He's always been a terrible sleeper so it helped us to encourage him to stay his room as one of us could comfortably be in there until he fell asleep. I have no concerns about him moving to a single bed as he currently has 18 teddies taking up 3/4 of the space and he sleeps hovering on the edge 🙄😁
He's lucky enough to have always had a good size room so no issue with floor space either. I'd go for it if you have the space.

Ooh a single cover takes up much less space in the WM and you could wash everything together

I wouldn't want to wash a kingsize duvet and bottom sheet all at once despite having a large drum on my WM

I don't get it... once you have kids the washers always on. It's no hardship tbh. I would rather have a double.

It's a struggle for many people to get washing dry this time of year. I have small bath towels for this reason, fitting things in the machine then drying it. More washes, tumble drying if no space to dry (luckily we don't own one) are more money when energy bills are unaffordable.

IKEA Hemnes Day bed. Brilliant as a single or double. My teenage dd uses it as a double now but I think it looks much cuter single and done like a little sofa!

QuinkWashable · 14/12/2022 06:03

I gave mine a double - because it meant that if we had guests, they could go there and he could come in with us, or if he was sick there was room in his bed, or when his brother came along, they eventually both went in together (sounds weird, but they really liked it, and even now they're older, and have their own beds, they'll happily share on holiday or whatever, which is very convenient)

toogoodforthisworld · 14/12/2022 09:27

Out of experience- yes! Do it
We had 2 DD's- 3 years apart. They shared the double bed- they slept so well together! I used to climb in between them and read and cuddle them- happy days
We always had their friends staying over easily!
They liked playing in the bed too - so no real lack of play/floor space.
Also if one child was sick - we moved one child to our bed and one of us slept with the sick child and the other slept with the well child ( if this was necessary)
Best thing we ever did.
Don't buy bunk beds - Bain of my life! Hate everything about them- the squeaking, the difficulties changing the top AND bottom bunk.

So yes - double bed is a fab idea !

Wow, a lot of people really can’t fathom that you’re actually allowed to put a single duvet on a double bed 😁

No, I just don't think it'll look as nice

I actually put a king size duvet on a double bed (for teenagers though) because I like the way it drops over the side and feels more luxurious!

Then get a throw, like I said a bit of an imagination. It doesn't all have to be lots of washing and drying.

But yeah, double beds are ace for littlies. They go into singles later on. I've even got a single and it's fine.

RealBecca · 14/12/2022 13:04

Comfort, sleepovers and sex. Obviously.

Moonatics · 14/12/2022 14:11

MilkyYay · 13/12/2022 17:56

Just my opinion.

Clearly double beds were invented with the intention of two people sharing!! Lol that people can't work out that double = ×2

By that reasoning a king size is only for kings?

And the super king that I desire and will one day have when I move to a house with bigger rooms is only for super kings?

pointythings · 14/12/2022 16:56

@Moonatics quite. By that reason I shouldn't be allowed a double either, as a single-and-intent-on-remaining-so woman. Fuck that, I want to starfish.

MavisMcMinty · 14/12/2022 17:02

I was nearly 30 before I got a double bed, having always lived in rented furnished accommodation, so go for it! In fact the next single bed I slept in (at a friend’s house) I rolled over and fell out, so maybe a double would make it less likely for your toddler to fall out of bed?

ConsuelaHammock · 14/12/2022 17:04

I did for both my children. Went straight into a double bed from a cot. I recommend double beds to anyone who has the room. Buy a good bed and be done with bed buying. Also they can double up if you have guests.

Bobcatbobby · 14/12/2022 18:26

Mine will go straight into a small double when she outgrows the cot. Mainly because it’s what we already have going spare and I don’t see the point spending money on a toddler bed that she will outgrow in 2 minutes when we already have a perfectly good bed! She has a playroom downstairs so floor space isn’t an issue and I like the idea of being able to snuggle up and read stories, get in with her when she has a bad dream etc. So I would say double all the way!

VitaminX · 14/12/2022 18:30

Toddler beds are not a scam though. They're a great idea for saving space. DS has a small 70x140 IKEA bed because he's a small boy and he has a small bedroom. When he's older he'll need a high bed if we're still in this house because otherwise the furniture would be way too cramped.

At 5, he's not really old enough for a high bed so the small bed is perfect. My 7 year old still fits in it with no problems too. He's had it since he was 2 so it's done him 3 years and it'll easily do him for several more years yet. Not everyone has huge strapping rugby player sons who are pushing 6 foot as preteens!

Just get what suits your needs and be happy there are so many options these days.

Athenen0ctua · 14/12/2022 18:57

DS had a cot size toddler bed. We mostly coslept but he used it for naps, when I needed to temporarily stop cosleeping to nightwean him, later on for hot summer nights when we wanted our own space. He still fit in it comfortably when he started school, so used from age 1 to 4. I got a single at that point (toddler bed passed on to be used by someone else) in case he was seen to have a 'babies bed' by friends. It was great as it easily fit in my room (he preferred not to sleep alone). Space is another reason why I wouldn't go for a bigger bed than necessary. We have always privately rented so a bed has needed to work with any space when we've moved.

I think "plenty of room" is a bit of a stretch. They are ok in an emergency, but would you seriously choose to sleep in one? I wouldn't.

Yes of course I would sleep in a single (3ft) bed. They're hardly tiny!

Exactly, three feet is plenty. Last time DS and I stayed somewhere on holiday we had a room with three single beds, they are a perfectly normal size for a single person.

Yes, and strictly speaking even in a king size you only have 3ft per person .

King size are 5ft wide and usually 6ft 6 long, so you get 2.5ft per person
Super king are 6ft wide and 6ft 6 long

Other bed sizes are 6ft 3 long

Not including
Texas king, Wyoming king, family bed or Alaskan king and other similar extremely large beds. I do not know how they get bedding to fit.

Oh wow, that's a lot of different sizes! I meant super king size then 😀
