To advocate for DD having a double bed?

xhelper · 13/12/2022 15:40

DD is in a cot currently, but will soon be moving into her own bed

I want to give her a double bed, H thinks it's ridiculously OTT?

Now, hear me out on this... I spent ages looking at all the super pretty Little White company fairy bedding sets, and couldn't wait to do all of that

But they don't come in double size and I think she might be more comfy in a double?

Who doesn't want a double over a single bed anyway?

H thinks I'm mad but says 'you do you darling'

Would you give your toddler a double bed? AIBU?

Double bed is great for young kid. I'd say definitely go for it.

My daughter has one for her youngster and many times I've been so glad of a comfortable place to sprawl whilst sharing a bedtime story or comforting the little one after a nightmare.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 13/12/2022 16:46

If you've got the space, why not.

But I'm glad DD only has a single, if she had a double I'd struggle to fit all our bedding into one washing machine wash. And I'd have to use the tumble drier more to dry it (no banister to hang anything over).

Get her a double bed with a single duvet? DW and I have a king bed for the two of us with a double duvet each and it is amazing!

gogohmm · 13/12/2022 16:48

Top tip for bedding op - Asda! And get two sets because you'll wash it a lot.

Greatbiggoldfish · 13/12/2022 16:50

I would keep the floor space at that age for playing . Just got 14 year old a double bed now his room is more about gaming and homework than Lego .. has worked out well - the single mattress needed replacing anyway and I sold on the bed

PinsetAndTwirls · 13/12/2022 16:51

Mine had doubles right from the start. They are now at university but still sleep in the same beds when they come home! Double was useful for sleepovers etc when they were little - you can fit three young children in a double and they think it's great fun.

gogohmm · 13/12/2022 16:51

@pointythings

Got 3 at university, no doubles aren't the norm, getting a bed that's actually comfortable is not a given. In 8 or 9 places I can only think of one place one of them lived with a double, but that was really mouldy and horrible! None of the halls (4 separate ones, don't ask Confused, had doubles.

PalmLady · 13/12/2022 16:52

The only downside is the taking up of floor space. It's great to have lots of room for toys and play. If you have a large room then it's not an issue.

PinsetAndTwirls · 13/12/2022 16:52

There was still floor space, but they didn't really play in their rooms when they were younger - they tended to want to be downstairs where all the action was and where I was.

Hankunamatata · 13/12/2022 16:52

We went for toddler bed. As meant they could get in and out easily (not far too fall when they rolled onto the floor in their sleep)

LuciferRising · 13/12/2022 16:53

DD 10 has a double. She absolutely loves it, and never really played in her room when younger. If you can afford it and have the space, I would. Who wants to sleep in a single?

minipie · 13/12/2022 16:55

I’m in with my eldest loads - she has always been a tricky sleeper, needs a cuddle to get to sleep, currently having a bad dreams phase too.

A single bed is plenty big enough for this.

My single bed saw me through to age 21 or so. Same for 6’3 DH. In fact for a while we shared a single Grin

Unless the room is enormous I’d definitely pick a single and keep the floorspace for playing.

Hugasauras · 13/12/2022 16:55

In terms of floor space for playing, DD would never want to play alone in her room. Granted we have a large playroom but even without she'd want to play downstairs where everyone else is. If we are in living room she will bring her toys in there. She's never shown an interest in playing in her room and she has no toys in it anyway. She's about to turn 4 so maybe there's a sweet spot when they're old enough to want to play on their own in their rooms before they get to teenage years!

We didn't have a playroom when I was a kid so I did play in my room sometimes but bed space just becomes part of the play area anyway IME.

No toddler needs a double bed. Don't be bloody stupid.

Well they probably don't but..
My friend got one for hers as there was no point in getting a toddler then single bed etc. her husband is 6ft 7 and child is so tall it's ridiculous!
Plus if he's unwell she can get in the bed with him if needed or swap about for guests etc
It's just more convenient and less cost then buying toddler bed, single bed and so on

WonderingWanda · 13/12/2022 16:55

I wouldn't, they may not want to share bed when they have sleepovers. A toddler doesn't need a double sized bed to be comfortable, neither does a teenager. I'm 5'9" and I can sleep in a single bed no problem. It only really makes sense if she is going to regularly have to give up her bed for relatives to stay in.

Sorry to clutch pearls but a tv in 3 yr olds room!

Itsonlyagame · 13/12/2022 16:57

Ds has had a double bed since 2. Mainly because he is autistic and sleeps badly, so I spend half my night in there!

bellsbuss · 13/12/2022 16:57

All ours have had doubles since a young age

Yumyumgin · 13/12/2022 16:57

My DS went straight into a double bed from his cot and I can't recommend it enough! As others have said, on occasions when you may need/want to join them you both get a much better sleep. If you can fit one in without compromising too much floor space then do it!

RewildingAmbridge · 13/12/2022 17:01

@Clymene a standard UK single mattress is 190cm or 6'2

Fifiellz · 13/12/2022 16:38

Buy an Ikea Hemnes day bed. Put the gorgeous duvet on it. Pull it out into the double when she is ill/gets older and wants sleepovers.

Mine now have small doubles but we did this option when younger.

This is a great idea OP! If I were you and wanted those bed covers (they're gorgeous btw) I would pick this bed. Great for sleepovers and if she wants extra floor space as she gets older too.

Yes I am aware of that. But my children have 2m long beds. Smile

RewildingAmbridge · 13/12/2022 17:08

@Clymene might get one for DH when his snoring drives me mad 😁
