To advocate for DD having a double bed?

xhelper · 13/12/2022 15:40

DD is in a cot currently, but will soon be moving into her own bed

I want to give her a double bed, H thinks it's ridiculously OTT?

Now, hear me out on this... I spent ages looking at all the super pretty Little White company fairy bedding sets, and couldn't wait to do all of that

But they don't come in double size and I think she might be more comfy in a double?

Who doesn't want a double over a single bed anyway?

H thinks I'm mad but says 'you do you darling'

Would you give your toddler a double bed? AIBU?

My two have had a double bed each for years! DD when she was 3 and her brother came along. DS since he was 7. It houses many teddies and when needed they're double beds for extra family to stay over as we're all split across the
Country and having 4 double/king beds, a single and a sofa bed mean we can have big meet ups

The biggest bed/mattress you can reasonably easily buy in the UK is an emperor. At 7ft by 7ft it's really really big but still dwarfed by the Alaskan king at 9ft by 9ft.

You can have a bed and mattress made to any size or shape you want. But it'll cost you thousands, then you will have to arrange bedding made to size.

MavisMcMinty · 15/12/2022 20:59

Wow! My ex-BIL was 6’5” and always complained he was too tall for a super-kingsized bed, but I didn’t know you could get emperor or ‘Alaskan king’-sized ones! Often the supermarkets bed-linen only goes up to kingsize, nothing bigger, and we have a super-king.

On the subject, any recommendations for a good but not expensive mattress? We need something that comes compressed, as our stairway is too tight to get a normal mattress up it, macman had to take up the bedroom floorboards and living room ceiling to get our bed upstairs. I’m far too embarrassed to tell you how old the mattress is, but it’s certainly a LOT older than the 6-8 years google tells me is the lifespan of a mattress.

Can you get a zip link up? If it's a king size zip link, it'll be like two singles.
Then as the name implies zip together.

I cant say where to get one from but they are not unusual

MavisMcMinty · 15/12/2022 21:46

Thank you! Didn’t think of that.

Fbearsmum · 17/12/2022 18:29

If you've got the room for a double then go for it, my ds has been in a double since he was 7 and he sleeps far better in a double then he ever did in a single.

We moved our DC from cotbed to a king size - because we already had an unused king sized guest bed and waste not want not. DC is comfy, I'mmfier for co sleeping when they are unwell or unsettled and we don't have to upgrade size again in the future.

Pupinski · 17/12/2022 18:39

Bonkers!

Wow, a lot of people really can’t fathom that you’re actually allowed to put a single duvet on a double bed 😁

We do the opposite! In the winter - double duvet on a single bed is very warm for my DC!

Fluffmum · 17/12/2022 18:53

I had a double bed from the age of 3. Loved it

See, I get this, I only get doing it the other way around if you already have a double bed but don't need the space so want to save on washing. A single quilt means you can't really use the full space or you would get cold.

Wishawisha · 17/12/2022 18:58

And I wouldn’t personally because we don’t have big bedrooms.. but if you do have big bedrooms, less wastage as you never need to buy a single bed?

Our issue really is that our walls are not straight in our (very old) house and we have space from the old chimneys in every room which mean that there is so much wasted space in each room if we try to get big beds in. I’d be tempted to ask a carpenter to make something bespoke.

It’s a huge amount of waste to buy a cot, cot bed, toddler single, single, double etc (although I appreciate most people don’t buy all of these stages) - the fewer stages the better. I’ve always co-slept perfectly fine in a single bed though 😊

Athenen0ctua · 17/12/2022 19:05

DS 16 has only had a cot size toddler bed then a single. I needed the toddler bed to fit in my room so no option for just the one bed. Toddler bed was cheap and I already had been given cot sized bedding. Needs can change.

Plenty of us survived our entire childhood/teenage years in 2'6" beds, let alone ordinary singles. I never noticed any discomfort (except when they were bunked and I was on the bottom).
Giving kids double beds seems to be a new thing - but how do they cope when they go off to uni and only have a single?

I can see the sense in buying a double if occasionally your child is turfed out of their room when grandparents come to stay, but otherwise wouldn't they rather have the floor space?

My kids in their 40s...we gave them all doubles from the age of 8....

Skynorth · 17/12/2022 20:43

A child does not need a double bed.

TimeLimit · 17/12/2022 20:46

My daughter is 2 and has one! Best decision we ever made. She sleeps better, doesn't fall out, and if she wants one of us in the night, we can lie next to her and sleep too 🙈

Next do lovely kiddy bedding for doubles

N1no · 17/12/2022 21:28

My parents did this and DP and I will sleep in this bed when we are visiting. I’m 39 now!

Squeakybits · 17/12/2022 21:34

I've just done this for my 10 year old. Best decision ever

MrsPetty · 18/12/2022 00:35

My DDs had cots that turned into mini beds, then bunks with a double and a single on top and have both now progressed to doubles. I’m with you OP - given the choice I think most would opt for a double bed…

KettrickenSmiled · 18/12/2022 00:36

H thinks I'm mad but says 'you do you darling'

Then why do you need to advocate, or ask PP what to do?

changedmyname23 · 18/12/2022 00:41

I bought my DD a double bed after spending 6 months of lying on the floor trying to get her to sleep in her cot bed .... I then slept in with her for the next 3 years. If she had a single I would have tried harder to settle her during the night but as there was space for me to jump in beside her that's what I done.

If you value sleeping in your own bed don't do it

prescribingmum · 18/12/2022 06:06

Sibling and I had a double as soon as moved out of cots for practical reasons - there was no other space in our childhood home and often had guests to stay so needed to double as guest bed. Surprisingly enough for many on here, I had zero difficulties adjusting to a single in my 4 years at university🙄

We have done same for both DC. DC1 had double in their room from before they were born and we kept this. Bought DC2 a double as they came out of their cot. As many others have pointed out, lovely for stories and when they’re unwell and want to keep an eye on them. Plus they have sleepovers in each others rooms and when cousins come to stay. We have the luxury of a separate playroom which is larger than they need and I prefer it this way. I also prefer play dates not going upstairs so having no toys in the bedroom keeps it all down

Katemax82 · 18/12/2022 07:43

Nothing wrong with a child in a double bed. My daughter has been in one since she was 4
