To think the British royal family has had its day?

I had a lot of respect for the Queen, may she rest in peace… But now she has passed away I just feel like the UK Royal family/ establishment should just be abolished.

The younger generations are not the same standard as Queen Elizabeth was. There’s so many rumours and so much scandal in recent times. And what have these people really done in order to justify leeching of UK tax payer money to fund their privileged lifestyles?…

Am I the only one who thinks the members of the Royal family should give up their royal roles and get real jobs and earn their own living like anyone else in the country?

@Livingtothefull - Slimming down the Monarchy for starters and those who are working royals. Change that should have taken place years ago but the Queen did not like change.
His coronation will be slimmed down as he recognises the CoL crisis right now and it wouldn’t be appropriate for large scale.
He’s personally supporting foodbanks across the country (combatting austerity caused by government)
You never saw QE do this..

'Andrew’s in exile in Royal Lodge, the only person who ever supported him was the Queen. The Sussexes have frozen themselves out, they chose to fuck off'.

Well I think it is a matter of opinion whether a luxurious life in a grace and favour mansion in Windsor qualifies as 'exile'. And the Sussexes didn't just choose to 'fuck off'; they tried to negotiate a modified role supporting the monarchy but the RF were having none of it; so they felt they had no choice but to leave. Just to quote their initial statement:

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen'.

Anyway, regardless of the facts and whatever you think of them, are they not entitled to leave if they want to? They are just doing what millions of people do every day in making career changes, I just can't see they deserve the vilification they have got and most of it from monarchists.

Livingtothefull · 13/12/2022 20:24

I appreciate what you are saying @good96 and of course any such support is welcome. It is a shame though that food banks were closed on the Queen's funeral day.

We know he made a 'generous' contribution to food banks which of course is appreciated although we don't know how much it is; any more than we know the precise details of his personal wealth including what he inherited from the Queen (her will is sealed for at least 90 years).

tigger1001 · 13/12/2022 20:28

I didn't particularly respect the queen either, and she had her share of turbulent times where people questioned whether we should have a royal family and they were seen to be out of touch.

They seem more out of touch now.

Crikeyalmighty · 13/12/2022 20:32

No I think we should have a very low key monarchy, like Denmark, Netherlands etc - take out anything political too

Lampzade · 13/12/2022 09:06

Lol When you put it like that

He expressed that wish in a private telephone call which should never have been recorded and it’s disgusting that that conversation is used against him on here, I’m pretty sure these posters would be up in arms if H&M’s private lover’s telephone calls were recorded and released for the world to hear.

Totally agree, I've got lots of different friendship groups and have literally just one quite vocal anti monarchist friend. She sticks out so much as very unusual. We range from 40-70 years old .

Really! Or perhaps some of the other people are privately agreeing with her. I tend not to voice my opinion on things that I know are not worth the aggro of getting into with friends.

greenhousegal · 13/12/2022 21:08

Probably a personal insult to them, but I don't care.... William and Catherine have zero charisma.

William's smile never reaches his eyes and it can look false and goofy.

Catherine is muted, but her frocks make up for that.

Cutting ribbons and travelling to the former Empire is a ridiculous way to describe your job.

Charles never had a job apart from a stint in the navy which gave him the right to wear magnificent medal ribbons on his big hairy chest. Great grounding for an indolent life as King, perfect in fact.

But we are stuck with them. That won't change.

LadyKenya · 13/12/2022 21:13

Honestly I just do not see what they do, that is of any real benefit to anybody.

EdithWeston · 13/12/2022 21:17

We need to remove them because we are a modern society that does not truly believe in divine right to rule. Without that belief the monarchy doesn't work

Divine Right was abolished in Britain by the Glorious Revolution in 1688

I don't know if it's ever in other European monarchies (or if it did, when it was abolished there too)

Cornettoninja · 13/12/2022 21:26

In all honesty I can’t be arsed to replace one lot of over-privileged people with another set of egotistical, probably elected, over privileged people. At least a monarch is an international representative that’s a politically neutral, known quantity who has to carry their actions along the length of a lifetime instead of doing whatever the fuck they like then waltzing off into the sunset (Blair, Cameron, Johnson).

Whomever or whatever replaces the monarchy will be raised to similar levels with the same privilege that brings. The royal family will still retain their status and family wealth so what does it actually achieve?

PurpleButterflyWings · 13/12/2022 21:37

This! The OP and people with the same views are hilariously deluded if they think ANYONE ruling the country/at the top of the food chain in the country won't be over-privileged ... This 'The Royals Need To GO' mantra that some posters keep spouting is tired and tedious and boring. It's been said a thousand times on here, no-one is taking any notice of you, and it's NEVER going to happen. The Royal Family are here to stay. Sorry and all that. Wink

Oh no we all have very open, lively and frank discussions about everything under the sun, honestly, believe me, I'd know if they didn't like the Royals!

StoneofDestiny · 13/12/2022 21:53

Absolutely had their day and should have been abolished with the Feudal System.
We need a model of an elected Presidential System that suits the UK. One person, no extended family and endless offspring to support in the grandeur they have been accustomed to. One residence, no endless palaces and mansions laughingly called 'cottages'. No bowing and scraping, no courtiers, ladies in waiting, butlers etc. Tight control of budget and the end of the bottomless clothing allowance.
Charles talked a good talk about 'reducing the size and cost of the monarchy' then spent billions of taxpayers money on his mothers funeral and simply renamed 'ladies in waiting' as 'ladies of the palace' or some similar title, with no staff reductions.
Giant piss take.

Foodbanks weren’t closed in our area. I opened ours at 11am on the day of the funeral. The Trussell Trust closed in our area but other food pantries/banks opened.

We can choose the model we want and can vote them in and out.
With royals we are just obliged to pay for whatever they foist on us - Kate and William have 3 kids and we are forced to house and pay for their upkeep for life. If they had 10 kids we'd have to do the same. We've had to tolerate Philip embarrassing us all over the world with his racist and misogynistic insulting behaviour and pay to keep Andrew safe despite his odious conduct the Royals paid to keep out of court!

Piss Take

Royal Pantomime, not just for Christmas.
Of course they need to go!

Blossomtoes · 13/12/2022 22:09

Nobody knows how much the Queen’s funeral cost. Thatcher’s cost over £3 million which I begrudge far more - a decade of actively causing misery to millions of people being rewarded with state honours offends me much more than burying a head of state after a lifetime of service to her ungrateful country.

PurpleButterflyWings · 13/12/2022 22:10
