To think the British royal family has had its day?

I had a lot of respect for the Queen, may she rest in peace… But now she has passed away I just feel like the UK Royal family/ establishment should just be abolished.

The younger generations are not the same standard as Queen Elizabeth was. There’s so many rumours and so much scandal in recent times. And what have these people really done in order to justify leeching of UK tax payer money to fund their privileged lifestyles?…

Am I the only one who thinks the members of the Royal family should give up their royal roles and get real jobs and earn their own living like anyone else in the country?

YANBU but after Brexit I’m very wary of constitutional change

Fair enough, Jamaica's moving onward and upward. What are your thoughts on the other 13 commonwealth countries with the king as head of state? What should they do?

We're already an ex-EU country. Do we want to instigate the dismantling of the commonwealth, or do we think they'd figure out a way to carry on without us?

But why wouldn’t they figure it out without “us”? These are modern democracies who can democratically elect their own heads of states. They don’t need a monarch, who lives thousands of miles away, to be their nominal leader. The monarchy represents empire, which was never a good thing, the constitutional monarchy is a symbol of that, in many ways. Why would thriving democracies want to hold on to something so archaic and out dated, and find a much more better and effective?

Why we are hell bent on destroying our own culture perplexes me. Most of us would not in a million years suggest that another culture should ditch its traditions etc. But when it comes to ours, we’re happy to just say fuck it!

I wouldn’t swap places with any of the royals and I don’t think they’re privileged. Yes of course in terms of money etc - but would you like to be Kate and have death threats regularly to your family? would you like not to even be able to go to Tesco without getting papped? Would you like to be judged and criticised for every outfit you wear? They bring in far more money and interest than they cost. They attract interested tourists from all over the world. They don’t even rule us - politicians do.

When tourists come to this country I am pretty certain that 99.999% never see of any of the royals. Yet, they still come in droves.

The Palace of Versailles and Lourves, for example, are one of the most visited palaces the world and yet the monarchy there was abolished in 1789. The tourists will always come.

AnotherLogOnTheFire · 13/12/2022 06:17

But who would the tabloids feast on? Megan and Harry like his mother make our gutter press very rich - they are vital to the hoards of people who need daily updates on how badly they are handling their lives. We need someone to hate (btw- I don’t hate them, don’t love them - just can’t seem to get away from the hate everyone spews about them) it’s too easy.

Remaker · 13/12/2022 06:25

I’m Australian. I would find it embarrassing if you got rid of the Royals before we did! But we’d get over it.

Australia tried to become a republic but it all came unstuck because we couldn’t agree whether to elect or appoint our head of state. Those kinds of details are boring but necessary.

I feel like it’s a bit unfair complaining about William and Kate being dull. The Queen wasn’t exactly the life of the party either. It’s not part of the job description to be opinionated and exciting.

Henrysmycat · 13/12/2022 06:27

So many here are so shortsighted and absolutely clueless or fundamentally uneducated.
Abolishing the RF, the monarchy, and not replace it with any other constitutional system of power?
It’s this stupid attitude that go uk in this brexshit mess.
Also, have a look at other countries with head of states. Is US, Germany, Greece any better with “elected” head of states?
At least here, you train them from birth unlike the idiots these countries vote for.
And I’m an immigrant here, I got no skin in this game. I just know that the grass is not always green on the other side, I’ve been there.

KimberleyClark · 13/12/2022 06:34

And what about other countries with the king as head of state... Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica etc. Would we be forcing them into a constitutional crisis? Do we just not care about how we impact them?

Isn’t it a bit patronising to think these countries somehow need to have our monarch as their head of state and couldn’t manage without them?

magicthree · 13/12/2022 06:46

I think all the former colonies are probably more than ready, and will be very happy, to brake away from the commonwealth and elect their own heads of state. They are ready to move forward away from the archaic system they find themselves in.

Do you live in one of these "former colonies" and have canvassed all the people living in them? If the answer is no then I really don't understand why you think you are important enough to be able to speak on their behalf!

Other countries seem to manage perfectly fine without some privileged royal to sign off laws they have no power to change anyway…

Im sure we would manage too

Other countries…. Yet Norway; Sweden; Denmark; Netherlands; Belgium all have monarchies and are considered leading liberal democracies. Is there a regular clamouring for their abolishment?

I don’t think Barbados had a democratic referendum for removal.

Prescottdanni123 · 13/12/2022 06:54

@SnoozyLucy7

A big draw for the Americans is that we still have a monarchy. Other countries too. Tourists coming over to visit a few castles after the monarchy is abolished won't draw in the same amount of money as it does while we have the monarchy.

Is it not patronising to say “WE in the “civilised, liberal, progressive ” (sic) West know better than you?

Theunamedcat · 13/12/2022 07:00

The country is in crisis is this really where our focus should be?

It's not a dysfunctional family it's Harry and his wife no-one else is Jeremy Kyle they are all carrying on like he doesn't exist

TodayInahurry · 13/12/2022 07:01

I, like tens of millions of UK citizens, like the Royal Family. I find it pathetic people moan about them.

I am sure there are many royalists in all these countries, but when you have royal family loving Brits seriously worrying, and fretting, about how are all these former colonies are going to to “survive”, without Charles being their of head of state, when they clearly could and eventually will - what makes the Brits think they are do very important that they seriously think these countries won’t survive with out them? It’s such arrogance!

Lampzade · 13/12/2022 07:09

The Queen was definitely the glue that held the family together.
I don’t think that any of them are fit to take her place tbh.
The monarchy will survive but in a weakened state. I suspect that more secrets will be exposed about the Royal family which will have an adverse effect on the monarchy

Exactly. There’s so many people who believe that some how these nations will crumble without the monarchy. Indeed, very patronising.

I like them too. They won't go, the monarchy will survive.

LlynTegid · 13/12/2022 07:14

I can understand and would support countries outside the United Kingdom choosing to have a person resident in their country as Head of State. Much more likely since the Queen died.

Different from keeping the monarchy in the UK, which I support, albeit a smaller one and with no political role at all, even in theory. For example, the House of Commons voting in the Prime Minister.

Virginiaplain · 13/12/2022 07:14

Well if harry and m had quietly moved to the US to live a comfortable but quiet life we wouldn't have all the headlines.

I think it's the media as shit stirrers that mean we are all getting fed up with the royals. If the media didn't fan this attention seeking by H&M then life would have quietened down and we'd see W &K opening the odd hospital etc and that's it

lollipoprainbow · 13/12/2022 07:16

Agree, it can never be the same again now the queen has gone. Charles doesn't have the same star quality and I have zero interest in him or Camilla. Catherine and William dull dull dull. The stuffiness, curtsying, etc. bye bye !!

Tinseltosser · 13/12/2022 07:18

Sorry, this is probably a stupid question…

But couldn’t the prime minister, whoever it was at the time, be the head of state during their time in office?

I thought that the royal family had no actual power/say over anything important anyway?

Bestcatmum · 13/12/2022 07:23

I feel its come to an end with Andrew, Harry, Charles swearing at pens, William and his affairs. I feel disgusted by them. They are not behaving like people in their position should behave. They are losing respect hand over fist.
