I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

This squad is very likeable . I do feel sorry for them

Your second point- sorry but that is just not true

It absolutely is.

Andy Murray winning - British.
Andy Murray losing - Scottish.

Wineat5isfine · 10/12/2022 22:22

English family here - we are die hard supporters of any UK team in whichever sport we are watching!

Fully aware of the “ABE” bitterness. It’s a shame, but we do us and you do you 😁

I’ve watched most thanks. In your post you didn’t say they’ve talked about the 1966 win all through World Cup footage. (Which is obviously very likely they will, isn’t it. Duh)

you said the media ram it down our throats at every opportunity- which is just nonsense

You’re taking my comments very personally, are you in Scotland? Watching coverage on Scottish TV? Seeing Scottish news channels and listening to Scottish radio stations? As we’re not in the tournament I expect neutral coverage on our tvs so we can enjoy the tournament not whinging lineker and wright. The only decent coverage has been when McCoist has been commentating.

@Helpyou well it shows as england fans always used to wiish the other nations to do well, unless playing agains them

This is bollocks.
I was living in London during the 2016 euros and watched the wales v portugal match in a pub there, every single english person in my workplace and in the pub were rooting for portugal.

I really don't care about football at all but there are so many things that if you are english you wouldn't even notice, like the bbc blatantly supporting england during the 6 nations despite it being a BRITISH broadcasting service not a regional one, big shops only selling england merch for tournaments even in their stores in wales, etc. So not surprised people get worked up about it.

I love that people don't get Andy Murray's dry sense of humour and wit!

Completely Agee, I think even at one point Andy quoted ABE!!!

Coxspurplepippin · 10/12/2022 22:23

Andy Murray is a stone cold jester. He's very funny in a dry, understated way, and a real advocate of women in sport. His put downs of journalists who laud men and forget about the amazing women in his sport are pure class.

Our house proudly support any home nation in any tournament, felt sorry for England tonight, but well done for getting into the quarter finals - no mean feat, as we felt sorry for Wales last week.

bibetyboo · 10/12/2022 22:23

The best ones are the ABE camp members who are ardent Manchester United/Arsenal/Liverpool fans. How can you hold such contempt for England but (in the case of my family) travel hundreds of miles from the west coast of Ireland to Old Trafford and Anfield.

I'm second generation Irish. I was reared with a strong Irish cultural identity. I watch a lot of hurling (Irish national sport) and I am fiercely proud of my heritage. Equally, I was brought into this world by the NHS, educated off the back of the British taxpayer and London is my home. I love England. And I love England tournament football.

Anglo-Irish history is complicated. It's painful and it's marred with tragedy. England football isn't British colonialism and that's why I enjoy it.

I find ABE very archaic and quite thick to be honest. Bukayo Saka and Gareth Southgate probably couldn't tell you the first thing about the Plantations.

healthadvice123 · 10/12/2022 22:24

@GrandTheftWalrus so is it jealousy then ? You can switch tv over and why not ask for another glass, pretty surprised they give a England glass though as don't seem to get that in England pubs even .
Plenty of people who don't like football manage to just ignore if

Abouttimemum · 10/12/2022 22:26

I don’t understand it either! We live close to the border (in England) so basically neighbours. Yet there’s people we know who say things like ‘oh all the Scots hate us’. All of them? Really. It’s all that bollocks stereotypical and misplaced patriotism. Not just with this but with all / most countries (which actually are just another man made nonsensical thing humans created)
it’s one of those things that really irritates me.

7eleven · 10/12/2022 22:26

It’s just jealousy

Travis1 · 10/12/2022 22:26

AbsolutelyFuckingSick · 10/12/2022 22:00

As an English person I wholeheartedly disagree.

Andy Murray anything = A whinging pain in the arse with the personality of a lump of jelly.

And as a Scottish person I’d say you do not understand him or his humour 🤷🏻‍♀️ he’s dry, sarcastic and witty af. Not his fault you don’t get him

Grendalsmum · 10/12/2022 22:27

I'm English but l was rooting for Wales - you'd need a heart of stone not to, it's their first time having a go for ages.

Turned on bbc breakfast today and rammed down our throats was about right...at one point they were 'interviewing' the dog in the pub about who would win tonight...

I was very amused by the fact that the dog was a Dogue de Bordeaux.

healthadvice123 · 10/12/2022 22:29

@latetothefisting well its not bollocks as i know lots of english who support other nations but on saying that its changed over the last few years due to how the other nations speak
Complain to the shops if you have an issue but its prob because english people live in wales like wales people live in england
My sports direct sells lots of wales kits ? I just walk passed , very easy
Bbc maybe british its audience is a high percentage of english is it not ? And the team is supported and watched by loads
Its called supply and demand its as simple as that

AbsolutelyFuckingSick · 10/12/2022 22:29

@Travis1 Chill out! I was having a laugh replying to another comment, it wasn't a dig because he's Scottish 😂 I think you've proven a lot of points made on this thread.
I hope your evening gets better so you can cheer up a little Smile

So I shouldn't watch the news at all while England are in?

In a busy pub am I meant to refuse and ask for another glass?

And I can assure you it was an England glass. As my other half collects them and asked the barmaid for one and she gave us 2.

glamourousindierockandroll · 10/12/2022 22:30

@latetothefisting i wonder, though, if that is a reaction to the ABE attitude rather than an inherent desire to see them lose? The fact simply is that England usually do better in these tournaments than the other nations - it is rare that they don't progress past the group stages.

So when England lose and social media is flooded with gleeful memes from Scots and Welsh posters then it is easy to see why some English fans might take the opportunity to get their own back when it presents itself.

I can only speak for the English people I know, but they are always happy to see a home nation doing well.

Scurryfunge12 · 10/12/2022 22:31

Nothing to do with being better at football, it’s the superiority complex and arrogance that makes people hate them. They’ve always been the same. You would swear they were a dead cert to win every tournament the way the media, pundits and the fans bang on.

The collective are very lacking in self awareness if they don’t realise this. If they were a bit more humble about it then maybe things would be different.

Coxspurplepippin · 10/12/2022 22:31

Coconut212 · 10/12/2022 22:15

The fans and the media ram it down everyone’s throats. If I heard it’s coming home one more time I would have poked myself in the eye. Even my local Asda had its coming home gifts (they’ll be down to 10p now). I’m glad England are out, I’ll never cheer them on but one thing I’ve never done is have that attitude in front of my son I’ve never said anything again the English football team and he’s 11 and hates the team too

Coconut, where do you think your son learned that 'hate' from? I find it a bit sad that such a young child hates something and would question his understanding of the hate he feels. It seems a bit, I dunno, extreme.

Davros · 10/12/2022 22:31

ABE = prejudice pure and simple

Is rooted in crippling jealousy, ime.

Couldn't be less true. Not jealous at all.

It's the media and commentators that are the issue really. The current players and Gareth S I have absolutely no problem with. They seem to be a decent bunch, work hard, very few scandals.

But it's the commentators and media whanging on and on about it's coming home / 1966 / the curse of penalties / best team ever / England expects / insert ridiculous over-egging and playing up their greatness stereotype comment here is what gets everyone else's backs up. And not just Scotland/Ireland/Wales.
