I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

Well said @schoolsoutforever and furthermore most English people LIKE Scotland! We find the Scots funny, quick witted and self deprecating, and I know loads of people who’d quite happily move up there (if only it was a little warmer!). Scotland is beautiful and we’re all in this together.

My God! You’re making sweeping statements about Scottish people! That’s similar to us thinking all English are ignorant! I am not quick witted at all. And that’s really nice that lots of you would like to move up to Scotland, I’m flattered!🙄

" my statement doesn’t apply to any other other nation? You’re choosing to ignore my statement is factually correct & can apply anyone. Prejudice is prejudice. You’re also trying to put words is my mouth, appear to accuse me of being the guilty party of stereotypes you’ve mentioned & accuse me of ignoring when other people say them? Do we know eachother? I don’t agree with any of it, so not sure how I’m being ironic. Odd. Goodbye."

You are ignoring the cause of the ill feeling though. It won't be fixed by ignoring it. Just look at some of the comments on this thread.

Again you’re assuming and trying to label me. Amazing how I can have good positive intentions and still get jumped on with negativity. Plenty of comments on this entire thread that have said shitty things & you’ve not continued to jump on them? 🤔 i’ve read the entire thread, stop telling me to read as if i haven’t.

For avoidance of doubt I said I don’t agree with any of the negativity, regardless of who it is about. I won’t respond anymore, you’re out for an argument and I’m not interested.

‘Scotland is beautiful and we’re all in this together’

Yes it is, no we’re not! Other home nations do NOT support England sports teams, generally speaking. We don’t care how nice you think our countryside is

Well screw you then 😂

If Scotland (or Wales or NI) reached the World Cup final I reckon most Englishmen would be rooting for them to win. Unless it was against us, obviously.

Look, no normal person holds a grudge against ordinary English people. Anyone from a neighbouring country will have English friends, relatives, colleagues who we like and get along with.

England as a country has done some terrible things throughout history and to this day is acting with complete disregard to its neighbours (Brexit undermining the Good Friday agreement for example).

No other country has done the kind of harm to England that England has inflicted on others, except maybe Germany. There's been huge animosity towards Germany (and France for that matter) amongst the English press for decades. Nobody expects an English person to support the German football team (quite the opposite) but most normal English people can rub along well with German people they meet.

It's quite frustrating that the average English person has no clue about the less savoury parts of their country's history. I understand that it's not typically taught in schools, but when English people feel entitled to support from other countries, while totally ignoring their own history, it doesn't sit well.

A bit of grace and self awareness helps. The current English team is seen far more favourably than previous ones, and doesn't seem to have the same issues with arrogance and bad behaviour. The players are a credit to their country.

The history is still there however, and it's naive to think that doesn't play a part in who people choose to support.

I lived in Scotland for a long time and experienced a huge amount of anti-English comments. All 'banter' of course. But not really. From normal, professional people.

There are a number of my English friends who have since moved back to England, in no small part because of this.

That absolutely shouldn't happen.

Many of my family and friends have experienced anti-Irish sentiment in England. The days of "no blacks, no dogs, no Irish" are not that long ago in the grand scheme of things.

I've had an element of it myself. Not outright aggression but comments along the lines of me being stupid (because all Paddies are thick apparently). One delightful man who was in the British Army told me he couldn't possibly visit Ireland because if he walked down the street in his uniform he'd be shot.

There are bigots amongst all nationalities unfortunately.

Not supporting a particular country in football does not equate to being a bigot though.

You're right, it doesn't equate, but for me the two always occurred together. It would start with anyone but England chat when England were playing, in football or rugby, then move swiftly on. In theory they do not equate but in practice they very much do.

And yet most England fans I encounter want Wales and Scotland to lose in every other round (right up until the Semi Final, which is the furthest either have made it in a major tournament).

But we’re meant to believe that it would be different if we made the final, and therefore we’re big old meanies (or massive racists) if we don’t cheer for England from game 1 onwards.

Mañanarama · 14/12/2022 16:46

Its clear there’s a big mindset difference between the die hard England sports fans, and the normal English folk aka the majority. Most people would be bloody delighted if Scotland beat Argentina or Wales thrashed Germany. Or maybe it’s just the people I know who aren’t horrible racist bigots. Either way, none of us won, and I couldn’t give less of a shit who does, now.

These well-wishers were oddly nowhere to be seen when Wales knocked out the favourites, Belgium, in the Euro 2016 quarter finals.

English fans supporting ABW in the semi-finals weren’t quite so elusive.

And again…that really is fine. If your local rivals suddenly wanted your team to win, that would take some of the fun out of it.

This! The comments I’ve had slagging off my accent, asking if I have a TV/internet in Scotland from English people on holiday seen as banter. I’ve took it as a joke but I won’t be cheering on the football team! It’s all a bit of fun. And yes you get bigots and racist everywhere!

RaraRachael · 14/12/2022 20:11

And yes you get bigots and racist everywhere!

An English friend of mine has had this since moving to Scotland. She got the old, "You English people coming up here taking our jobs" and then a similar comment at a funeral tea of all places . But if they're challenged, it's all banter and you can't take a joke etc etc

To be fair I have had the same in England moving from Scotland

I actually got “I don’t want to speak to a Jock”. When I said “sorry what did you say” all I got back was “oh nothing, thought you Jocks could take a joke”

So as the pp said bigots are everywhere it doesn’t matter what country you are in

Themisthefacts · 14/12/2022 20:27

I was on holiday and the comedian asked the crowd who was from England , Wales etc. When he was asked who was from Scotland and people cheered . The English Dad from the family behind us . Shouted kick them all out and lots of the crowd clapped and laughed . So yes it happens to both sides.

The weirdest one I ever had (and I’ve never had another like it) was being in a pub and someone being quite friendly and striking up a conversation with me.

At some point, I reveal that I’m Welsh (I don’t have the accent) at which point they go off on an anti-Welsh rant and make clear they won’t be speaking to me any further!

Usually it’s just shit jokes.

Wow that person sounds like a total prick! (I’m English). Get these knobs everywhere unfortunately! For context to the person that replied to you, there are English on this thread that don’t agree with it and have said so including myself.

I’m pretty sure most people know when something is said in a lighthearted way compared to a nasty way. Especially if there’s a relationship there. I’ve been to uni, worked with and have family members with English people who I love. Still doesn’t stop me thinking the media are arrogant and I won’t support the team.

Nogbreaks · 18/12/2022 19:53

okay. Being NOT English we are all well used to dealing with your contempt.
we don’t care, anyone but England!

Florenz · 18/12/2022 19:58

Even Brazilians cheered Argentina winning the World Cup. I cannot see Scottish ever cheering England if they got to the final and won.
