I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

I'm English and I certainly would support Wales!

Me too- as long as they weren't playing against England!

BMW6 · 10/12/2022 22:34

ganachee · 10/12/2022 21:49

I want any country of the U.K. to do well. If England and Wales were playing each other then I would be supporting England being English, but apart from that I would be supporting any country team that makes up the U.K. playing in any international tournaments.

Exactly my sentiments !

MichaelFabricantWig · 10/12/2022 22:35

I am Scottish but I do support England. I have an English parent.

BMW6 · 10/12/2022 22:35

ABE is just puerile I think

AbsolutelyFuckingSick · 10/12/2022 22:29

@Travis1 Chill out! I was having a laugh replying to another comment, it wasn't a dig because he's Scottish 😂 I think you've proven a lot of points made on this thread.
I hope your evening gets better so you can cheer up a little Smile

I’m having a fucking brilliant night to be honest. Chilled af and happy as Larry. Would like to know though…… Since when did ‘having a laugh’ equate to being downright rude about a person?

Couldn't be less true. Not jealous at all.

It's the media and commentators that are the issue really. The current players and Gareth S I have absolutely no problem with. They seem to be a decent bunch, work hard, very few scandals.

But it's the commentators and media whanging on and on about it's coming home / 1966 / the curse of penalties / best team ever / England expects / insert ridiculous over-egging and playing up their greatness stereotype comment here is what gets everyone else's backs up. And not just Scotland/Ireland/Wales.

But they’re cheering on the home team what exactly would you expect the press to go on about?

Hardly going to print articles saying they’re shite and they’ve got no chance, are they?

Really don’t understand these comments about going on about it/ramming it on our faces etc

Do you not think if Scotland/Wales/Ireland had won/were the most likely to win again it would be the same for them? Of course it would

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/12/2022 22:38

Im half English half Scottish married to a Welshman. I support any Uk teams but this ABE is just racist crap.

ScissorsPaperStone · 10/12/2022 22:38

Helpyou · 10/12/2022 21:41

I can't see England supporting Wales if Wales had got further in the world Cup do you? (Note, I'm not a football fan at all) but it works both ways.

I think this did happen once or twice though - maybe Euros and World cup - and we supported the "nearest" team, once maybe Scotland and once Ireland! So it really doesn't work both ways.

I'm English living in Scotland, married to a Scot and our local pub has a banner outside saying "We support 2 teams - Scotland and the one playing England." Yep really welcoming, mate. Thanks for that.

DdraigGoch · 10/12/2022 22:39

VinoDino · 10/12/2022 22:14

@DdraigGoch yeah, I feel pretty impartial. I probably feel a bit slightly disappointed if they lose. But generally, I don't really care. I don't have any real affinity to those countries. My lovely BIL is English so I feel a bit sorry for him right now!

Indifference is fine. I don't care about football either.

What is moronic is willing a team to do badly, out of some petty tribal mentality.

walkinginsunshinekat · 10/12/2022 22:39

England (men) just aren't good enough to win a major footie trophy, so who supports who against who doesn't matter.... there will always be petty rivalry but the UK isn't a high quality football nation, so always lose against the top tier teams, the men lack the hunger or pride that other countries have.

England beat no one of note before France & have done quite badly recently, yet were supposed to be a favourite (according to English pundits) - its ridiculous.

The women, once again, lead the way!

flflflf · 10/12/2022 22:40

BashfulClam · 10/12/2022 21:30

Throughout the World Cup the England campaign has been rammed down our throats. I’d like to know about some other teams.

of course it is, if you live in the UK! what did you expect?????? go stay somewhere else maybe if you are unhappy about it?

Patronus · 10/12/2022 22:40

Some of the comments on here are comical - it’s Anglophobia wrapped up in ‘not humble enough’ type comments and the ‘coverage is annoying’.

100% this

VinoDino · 10/12/2022 22:42

@DdraigGoch and I've never done that. Like I said, generally speaking it's the media coverage, not the team that people are disliking IMO. Of course they are morons in all areas of life, that can't be helped.

glamourousindierockandroll · 10/12/2022 22:42

Scurryfunge12 · 10/12/2022 22:31

Nothing to do with being better at football, it’s the superiority complex and arrogance that makes people hate them. They’ve always been the same. You would swear they were a dead cert to win every tournament the way the media, pundits and the fans bang on.

The collective are very lacking in self awareness if they don’t realise this. If they were a bit more humble about it then maybe things would be different.

See, I don't recognise this.

It is certainly talked about a lot and there is always excitement but the tone and level of expectation was really quite muted and sceptical this time from what I picked up. They'd not been doing well in the warm up matches leading up to it and from what I understand the likes of Kane, Rashford, Maguire haven't been doing amazingly for their clubs.

I can't recall ever talking to anyone about England men's football and there being a conviction about them being the best team in the world. There's always hope, but rarely much belief. The three lions song is literally about how it never "comes home" but oh, here we go again.

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/12/2022 22:41

Jealous of what? Can't be English success lol!

tobee · 10/12/2022 22:43

All I've heard has been endless Mbappe and Messi and Ronaldo. Brazil showboating and doing endless un spontaneous dancing; disrespectful to South Korea but "oh dancing is in their culture"

I like the fact some surprising results have happened like Morocco etc

The media have been pretty restrained about England for once. I don't think there was a huge sense of expectation unlike previous tournaments.

I always support home nations against other countries. Don't hold any grudges.

I agree we are not the same standard to win. I don’t think that has anything remotely to do with pride and hunger, sometimes the other team is just better.

Cricket all the way!

DisneyPrincesss · 10/12/2022 22:43

VinoDino · 10/12/2022 22:32

Definitely this.

If Scotland, Ireland or Wales were good enough to stand a chance then perhaps the media coverage would be a more even spread.

ExcuseeeeMe · 10/12/2022 22:44

I wouldn’t mind England winning and I’m Scottish but to say we don’t get it stuffed down our throats is laughable . We can’t even enjoy any of the other World Cup games without them making every halftime about England regardless of who is playing. One game I watched(not England) they didn’t even discuss the first half but instead ran a montage about the England football team playing later in the week. I get constant emails from random companies saying It’s coming Home buy this or that .
