I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

@Whatmarbles don't have the talent ? Some amazing players in that team wanted by lots of teams in europe.
At least say the truth and they are not an arrogant team, most a young squad
Who is arrogant and what did they say ?

Why don’t we have a UK team? That would make more sense and prevent the England / Scotland / Wales divide.

I think there are a couple of reasons.

As I understand it, each of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales currently has a voice/vote within UEFA and/or FIFA. Team UK would likely have just one.

Also, it’s likely that the first team would be dominated by England players, so it would be more difficult for players from the other home countries to get a great deal of international experience. I’m assuming this could also affect their asking price and fee for transfers. And that’s before you start to factor in national pride and possible political issues.

All that said, it’s not something I know a great deal about, and I’m probably massively over-simplifying matters.

I’m English and I wouldn’t blame anyone for the Anyone But England approach tbh. It’s the relentlessness of the coverage, the moronic jingoism and “it’s coming home” and the constant whining about losing.

I have tons of respect for this particular England squad but most England fans are pathetic.

And it's this.

Gilmorehill · 10/12/2022 22:12

I’ve just been messaging my friends about this. It’s utterly pathetic. Scotland haven’t bloody qualified for almost 25 years but they are very quick to mock when England get knocked out.

To think the anyone but England mentality is cringe?
pollutemymind · 10/12/2022 22:12

It's the same mentality when say Man Utd plays against some Italian team in the champions league and all Liverpool arsenal fans support the Italian team.

@Thepeopleversuswork pathteic is looking down on others
So what about coming home its just a song thats stuck and a joke
Any other nation supports their team and have their own traditions etc and no one would put them down
Guarantee in morocco and france there not all saying omg im so embarassed everyone is getting behind our team

VinoDino · 10/12/2022 22:14

@DdraigGoch yeah, I feel pretty impartial. I probably feel a bit slightly disappointed if they lose. But generally, I don't really care. I don't have any real affinity to those countries. My lovely BIL is English so I feel a bit sorry for him right now!

Pidgeonslipshit · 10/12/2022 22:14

Helpyou · 10/12/2022 21:45

And I'm welsh but have links to England and was rooting for them today because I know my English links would be chuffed. But many Welsh and many English wouldn't!

My children have a Welsh Grandma and we live in South East of England. We are massive Welsh Rugby supporters and travel to Cardiff to watch the rugby.
We 100% would have supported Wales through the World Cup ..just annoying they were in the same group!

Davros · 10/12/2022 22:15

I want any country of the U.K. to do well. If England and Wales were playing each other then I would be supporting England being English, but apart from that I would be supporting any country team that makes up the U.K. playing in any international tournaments.
Me too. And most English people I know. I always send my Welsh friend or Irish relatives a good luck message, at least for a good game if they're playing us

Coconut212 · 10/12/2022 22:15

The fans and the media ram it down everyone’s throats. If I heard it’s coming home one more time I would have poked myself in the eye. Even my local Asda had its coming home gifts (they’ll be down to 10p now). I’m glad England are out, I’ll never cheer them on but one thing I’ve never done is have that attitude in front of my son I’ve never said anything again the English football team and he’s 11 and hates the team too

Patronus · 10/12/2022 22:16

VinoDino · 10/12/2022 22:05

I support England but wholeheartedly cheer on any home nation if they’re playing and that’s my default - am always surprised that isn’t what everyone does. Born in England, Irish heritage/passport.

I don't support England, NI or Wales because I am Scottish. End of. I don't care that they are home nations. And I'm not even a nationalist.

Great for you. I presume you take no pleasure in many sports then once your team is out of a competition if you only support your own nation exclusively.

I support home nations over other teams because they are culturally and geographically closest, but some people are just Anglophobes.

healthadvice123 · 10/12/2022 22:16

@pollutemymind no that is a different mentality
Team allegiance is very different and some big rivalry against certain teams
I support a small championship side so mostly want any english or british club to do well in europe, but our one big rival I would never support.
Its not the same as the uk nations football.

We will have to agree to disagree on that one I'm afraid 😂

I agree - he is a great supporter of female tennis players and coaches, and actually quite funny.

It’s not in jest, it’s people like you that “they” hate

Wheredoallthepensgo · 10/12/2022 22:18

@Daydreamer12345 it fucking well is true. There's been media studies on this that prove it.

SoupDragon · 10/12/2022 22:18

It's pathetic.

healthadvice123 · 10/12/2022 22:18

@Coconut212 hate is a pretty stong word against a team and an 11 year old hating a football team, he is pocking that up from somewhere?
You also don't have to buy the merchandise but its the workd cup so it will be for sale, bit like all the xmas stuff and xmas and easter eggs at easter
Normally in a couple of aisles so easy to walk on by

Yes i think it's an accepted form of anglophobia.

Nothing to do with that song.

So not very nice really.

GrandTheftWalrus · 10/12/2022 22:19

I'm in Scotland and for the whole of last week the news has been about England playing France. Every time its euros or world cup its shoved down our throats.

I went into a shop here and even the Mars bars were decked out for England.

Wetherspoons last year ordering a bud light came in an England glass, in Scotland!

Yes Scotland never get anywhere but its so annoying for it to be everywhere. Go on BBC news website and there was a build up to the game starting last week!

Mañanarama · 10/12/2022 21:41

VinoDino · 10/12/2022 22:20

@Patronus my cousins are Italians, so if they had been in it I'd have maybe been rooting for them. My close friend is French, I spent every year as a child in the school holidays for a few weeks in France and I love France so have more affinity to them so I'm pleased they won. I don't care that Wales and England are closest, I just have no affinity to them. I'm not an anglophobe.

I was cheering on the lionesses and cried when they won (but that symbolised more than just a win for me but that's another thread).

healthadvice123 · 10/12/2022 22:21
