The Promise by Girls Aloud is the most perfect pop song in the world. Change my mind

I love really good pop songs, by that I am not talking about lyrics, singing ability, deep relevance in terms of zeitgeist, I mean you hear it, you sing it, you want to hear it again. It makes you happy when it comes on.
Other Contenders for me are;
Love Sex Magic- Ciara
Sweet Dreams my LA ex- Rachel Stevens
Candy- Robbie Williams

I mean they're not up there with the White Album and Rumours but they're perfect examples of the genre.

Taking me back to my Manchester days 😀. I wanna give you devotion I don’t know who sang it though

louderthan · 10/12/2022 01:03

EachandEveryone what a banger. Nomad.

Sorry to disagree but I think you'll find
Don't leave me this way- The Communards, is far superior in every way.

I adore this song too! It's just perfection

The PSB's have some wonderful pop tunes that you can sing along to and with some clever lyrics.
Chris and Neil have stood the test of time

SequinsandStilettos · 10/12/2022 05:31

Indeed. Which is why my favourite Girls Aloud track is the underrated but sublime The Loving Kind, written by Neil, Chris with Xenomania.

Girls Aloud had some bangers, they really did and I will always be gutted I never saw them live.

Various Human League. DYWM is very famous, but what about (Keep Feeling) Fascination or Open Your Heart?

DuncanBiscuits · 10/12/2022 08:16

Pure Shores by All Saints.

LikeTearsInRain · 10/12/2022 08:19

Sugababes - too lost in you
or
Sugababes - freak like me

both fantastic for pop songs imo (yes I know freak like me is a cover and uses a Gary numan sample)

Their Glastonbury set this year was amazing 🤩

the80sweregreat · 10/12/2022 08:23

It was funny when Chris went missing at Glastonbury! Plus they did the hits , which is what Leone want at gigs

the80sweregreat · 10/12/2022 08:23

People not Leone !!

MokaEfti · 10/12/2022 08:25

Harry Styles - As It Was.
Perfect pop song!

Funkyslippers · 10/12/2022 08:28

Rhythm of the Night by Corona (?) always gets me dancing

Oh yes when the screen thing failed and Neil was standing there all alone. 😂
Those drummers are brilliant too.

(Girls Aloud and Harry Styles can get in the bin in comparison.)

the80sweregreat · 10/12/2022 08:32

Left to my own devices is a banger ( as Sara would say )

’I Wouldn’t Normally do this Kind of Thing’ has everything you need in a pop song. 😃

the80sweregreat · 10/12/2022 08:40

I admit that I'm a fan of the hits, but I don't know much about their lesser known songs or album songs.
I did have ' actually ' on a magnetic tape years ago.

Sparklingbrook · 10/12/2022 08:45

I miss the days of dashing into Virgin to pick up a vinyl album on the day of release and getting it home to listen all the way through a million times.

Or finding out a B side is better than the A side on a single. 😂 <ancient emoji>

As a musician who came of age in the Seventies, I should probably name change for this but…

…the best full-on, untouchably-well constructed, inescapably hummable, absolutely golden pop song of all time is probably ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears.

If I’m ever outed on this, I shall be banned from Blues Nights at every pub in London and the SouthEast.

And quite rightly too. ‘ Toxic’? Really? It hurts my ears. ☹️

Does it? Gosh - sorry. I’ll think of another one.

Yes, you can do better 😂

Choconut · 10/12/2022 08:55

Starship - Nothings going to stop us now. Super upbeat pop that you learn the words to in 5 seconds, perfect.

Or Tiffany, I think we're alone now - speaks to every teenage girl (and 47 year old women remembering when they were young).

I am a big fan of The Promise though and it always makes me feel Christmassy.

SergeiL · 10/12/2022 08:56

Thanks to everyone who has added to the Spotify playlist. I can see there has been some serious movement over night. I know what I’ll be listening to, doing the cleaning today.
