I love really good pop songs, by that I am not talking about lyrics, singing ability, deep relevance in terms of zeitgeist, I mean you hear it, you sing it, you want to hear it again. It makes you happy when it comes on.
Other Contenders for me are;
Love Sex Magic- Ciara
Sweet Dreams my LA ex- Rachel Stevens
Candy- Robbie Williams

I mean they're not up there with the White Album and Rumours but they're perfect examples of the genre.

If we’re talking Beach Boys, God only Knows surely?

Best song of all time. It will never be matched.

Lykia · 09/12/2022 22:46

I'm loving these. Here's my eclectic mix to add to the list:

Liberty X - just a little bit

S Club 7 - Don't Stop Moving

Sugar Babes - Round Round

LeAnne Rimes - Can't Fight the Moonlight

Spice Girls - Say you'll be there

Alisha’s Attic were tragically under appreciated…

The King of Rock n Roll by Aztec Camera.
Need You Tonight by INXS.
Teardrops by Womack and Womack.
They Don’t Know by Kirsty MacColl.

i seriously hate that Girls Aloud song. It’s such a mishmash, it sounds like it’s been in a blender.

DeadDonkey · 09/12/2022 22:53

I have your top 3 on my current playlist!

I’d probably say Tainted Love by Soft Cell is the best ever pop song.

DeadDonkey · 09/12/2022 22:55

The above was in response to this post!

declutteringmymind · 09/12/2022 23:02

Loads of Pet Shop Boys songs. Go West/Always on my Mind covers come to mind.

Katy Perry - Chained to the Rhythm

Bananarama -Venus/Cruel
Summer

Meh to Girls Aloud 😂

lightisnotwhite · 09/12/2022 23:48

Pop you say?

To me this means you dance to it, sing to it and relate to it. Must be acceptable to everyone between 3 and 103.

Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen
Can’t get you out of my Head - Kylie
Genie in a Bottle - Christine Auilgera

Most of Britenys back catalogue.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 09/12/2022 23:56

Mel and Kim - Respectable

EachandEveryone · 10/12/2022 00:00

Sparklingbrook · 10/12/2022 00:09

I’m just watching some 80s countdown thing that’s
come on the tv and Culture Club had some great tunes as did David Bowie in the ‘Let’s Dance’ era.

louderthan · 10/12/2022 00:19

Never Ever by All Saints is up there because it's so cool
Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode
Like a Prayer by Madonna.

But the most joyous, transcendental, fundamentally uplifting, beautiful song ever is Set You Free by NTrance. I almost cry every time I hear it because it's the soundtrack to so many happy memories .

EachandEveryone · 10/12/2022 00:26

Taking me back to my Manchester days 😀. I wanna give you devotion I don’t know who sang it though

itsnotmeitsu · 10/12/2022 00:35

I think 'Take Me to Church' by Hozier is brilliant in the way it tells a story, but the accompanying video is pretty horrifying.

IntentionalError · 10/12/2022 00:35

Biology is brilliant, but it’s maybe a bit too clever to be the perfect pop song. You can hear what GA & Xenomania were trying to do : ‘Let’s do a pop equivalent of Bohemian Rhapsody & see if we can get it to No 1’. And that’s exactly what they did, of course, but I still prefer The Promise, because it’s more sing along pop.

itsnotmeitsu · 10/12/2022 00:38

But I also think Stevie Wonder's 'Yesterday, Yester-me, Yester-you' is an example of an ideal pop song.
