I love really good pop songs, by that I am not talking about lyrics, singing ability, deep relevance in terms of zeitgeist, I mean you hear it, you sing it, you want to hear it again. It makes you happy when it comes on.
Other Contenders for me are;
Love Sex Magic- Ciara
Sweet Dreams my LA ex- Rachel Stevens
Candy- Robbie Williams

I mean they're not up there with the White Album and Rumours but they're perfect examples of the genre.

Explain the bit about the walking primrose to me. I find it quite disturbing. Like a triffid. What am I missing?

Grin that bit of the song was pretty creepy.

Well, Something Kinda Ooo is much better.
And then I'm going with:
Buck's Fizz, Land of Make Believe
Fantasy Island by Tight Fit
Dancing Queen and Lay All Your Love On Me, Abba.

We have the same taste!

'Higher' by The Saturdays

DepIndoChridmadWidMe · 09/12/2022 18:45

The pop songs I listen to most frequently are Everytime by Britney and Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears for Fears so clearly these are the greatest pop songs of all time.

God I bloody loved Girls Aloud! I'm just a love machine

She Loves You by The Beatles
Perfection and IMO one of the first real pop songs.

Do agree that Girls Aloud did pop really really well though.

Beatles so many to choose from. If I had to, I'd say I Want to Hold Your Hand.
But also Eight Days a Week
But equally She Loves You!

Vitriolinsanity · 09/12/2022 18:49

I can feel myself going to hell for writing "Reach" by Sclub7

I'll redeem myself by asserting I Love To Hate You by Erasure

And up the cheese ante with I'm Still Standing by Elton

faw2009 · 09/12/2022 18:50

The Cure have some great upbeat pop songs: Boys Don't Cry, Close to Me, Love Cats etc.

Also 80s classic Temptation by Heaven 17

DuncanBiscuits · 09/12/2022 18:52

Never Ending Story by Limahl
Karma Chameleon by Culture Club

kerstina · 09/12/2022 18:54

Sorry, got one wrong. I meant Delta Goodrem’s Lost Without You!

And also Carly Simon, You’re So Vain
Joni Mitchell, Big Yellow Taxi / Free Man in Paris
Agree too with Dolly and the Bee Gees. Also for the Bee Gees - You Win Again.
Simon & Garfunkel - 59th Street Bridge Song/Mrs Robinson

So many great pop songs !

kerstina · 09/12/2022 18:55

Oh forgot the cure Friday I’m in Love

most songs by Erasure.

Spot on.

A Little Respect is so perfectly pop, it is guaranteed to get big, burly, bald and beardy middleaged men singing and they've been known to dance as well. So is Sometimes. And Chains of Love. And Stop!

I made a mash up playlist of Erasure and Pet Shop Boys in 2019 for a Christmas do in a pub after a really loud guitar-y gig. Never saw ageing metalheads and punks so bloody happy before.

flowerycurtain · 09/12/2022 18:57

What's the one that goes:
"Five will make you get up yeah,
Sing it, 1,2,3,4 5 will make you get down yeah
Bring it, bring it on yeah,"

Or Blue All rise.

Take That pray.

Think my all time personal fav has to be The communards don't leave me this way though.

olivehater · 09/12/2022 18:57

I always loved “sweet dreams my la ex.”Just needed a bigger star singing it. It was apparently written with Britney in mind and would have been a mega hit had she gone for it.

Squirrelsnut · 09/12/2022 19:04

Tin Soldier by The Small Faces.

IHeartGeneHunt · 09/12/2022 19:09

Very glad to see the love for Land of Make Believe!

I've been having a think about this whilst out and about today and I'm going to add:

Back on the Chain Gang, Pretenders
Best Years of Our Lives, Modern Romance.

The 80s had some cracking pop music, never bettered.

takealettermsjones · 09/12/2022 10:57

What You Know by Two Door Cinema Club.

Oh yes this one is brilliant.

Also 'freedom' by george Micheal or everybody backstreets back by backstreet boys. Pure class.

tallwivglasses · 09/12/2022 19:21

While I love the Communards' version of Don't Leave me This Way, I'm afraid Teddy Prendergast has more emotion in his little finger than Jimmy in the original by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes.

I also love Ain't Nobody by Chakka Khan (I'm old!)

Sillybanana · 09/12/2022 19:32

Op you have good taste, agree with all your choices. Perfect well crafted pop songs.

dropthevipers · 09/12/2022 19:36

Get it on, t.rex, this town ain't......sparks, O, superman Laurie Anderson.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 09/12/2022 19:37

Another great Jimmy Somerville pop song is Smalltown Boy. A sad song but so catchy.

Hayliebells · 09/12/2022 19:43

Can’t agree I’m afraid. There’s oodles of better pop songs in existence, imo, such as:
Karma Chameleon - Boy George
Wake Me Up - Wham
Call Me Baby - Carley Rae Jepsom
Take on Me - Aha
Bad Guy - Billie Eilish
California Girls - Katy Perry

I could go on, but tbh, most pop from the 80s beats anything from Girls Aloud hands down. It was the best era for pop.

SergeiL · 09/12/2022 19:45

I have worked through some of these and added some suggestions from Spotify. It’s taking shape!

Thanks to whoever else is collaborating!

MMAMPWGHAP · 09/12/2022 20:09

Liking the Pulp, Wham, Communards, ABBA and Madonna ideas. But I also suggest Tainted Love by Soft Cell.
