I love really good pop songs, by that I am not talking about lyrics, singing ability, deep relevance in terms of zeitgeist, I mean you hear it, you sing it, you want to hear it again. It makes you happy when it comes on.
Other Contenders for me are;
Love Sex Magic- Ciara
Sweet Dreams my LA ex- Rachel Stevens
Candy- Robbie Williams

I mean they're not up there with the White Album and Rumours but they're perfect examples of the genre.

Some Candy Talking by The Jesus and Mary Chain and This Is The One by The Stone Roses, just joyous.

Iamthewombat · 09/12/2022 09:44

Explain the bit about the walking primrose to me. I find it quite disturbing. Like a triffid. What am I missing?

JaninaDuszejko · 09/12/2022 09:44

Agree with lots of the above (including the Biology is the best Girl's Aloud song).

I'd suggest 'Don't Stop Me Now' by Queen, 'Come on Eileen' by Dexy's Midnight Runners, 'Common People' by Pulp and 'Mr Brightside' by The Killers.

"HAPPINESS" by the 1975

Sorry to disagree but I think you'll find
Don't leave me this way- The Communards, is far superior in every way.

yep

Cocopogo · 09/12/2022 09:50

@JaninaDuszejko nails it for me

Sorry Op but your choices are naf, STOP and Spice up your life by the Spice Girls are the best songs ever. Good luck trying to argue otherwise 💋✌🏼

Bit of trivia. Stop by the Spice Girls is their only hit to not reach Number One.

Loics · 09/12/2022 09:54

Better than any of the songs in the OP? Off the top of my head:
Anything by ABBA.
Anything by Erasure.
A good few songs by Madonna (e.g. Like A Prayer, Papa Don't Preach, Frozen).

Joannagorilla · 09/12/2022 09:57

Abba wrote some terrible songs too tbf

Adored - Stone Roses
Born of Frustration - James
I Feel love -Donna Summer (see also Blue Man Group ft Venus Hum....although that version is more rock than pop).

YABU. For a start, Biology is better. It's 3 songs in 1.

I fully agree biology is a far superior song from girls aloud.

I have no idea how or why I know this, but Primrose is a dog.

Spice up your Life is dire! I love cheesy pop but that's the one song I will actually get off my arse to flip the radio over for.

Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode is the actual best pop song :)

Some Candy Talking by The Jesus and Mary Chain and This Is The One by The Stone Roses, just joyous.

Sang This is the One with DP as middle aged throwbacks in Heaton Park a decade ago. Absolute joy! Shame it was an absolute shambles with no beer mind 🤣

Imnotswallowingthat · 09/12/2022 10:07

Kylie's Can't Get You Out of My Head must be a contender, its proper earworm stuff that sticks in your head for ages after you hear it.

There was actually a scientific study by a German university into the perfect pop song and the winner was Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da by the Beatles. The other 2 in the top 3 were Red Red Wine (UB40) and There She Goes (The La's).

Agreed. It’s such a great song.

Also, Rock DJ by Robbie Williams.

AngelDelightUK · 09/12/2022 10:09

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Steps yet! You can’t go wrong with a bit of “Better Best Forgotten” or “One for Sorrow”

Imnotswallowingthat · 09/12/2022 10:10

This is, of course, the winner though...

neverbeenskiing · 09/12/2022 10:11

She Drives Me Crazy by the Fine Young Cannibals is the perfect pop song. Nothing will persuade me otherwise.

VickerishAllsort · 09/12/2022 10:11

Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.
And I will hear NO argument.

Primrose was a dog belonging to one of girls aloud.

But I think the actual lyric is about walking in Primrose Hill.
"So here I am, walking primrose, wondering when I'm gonna see you again"

I guess either works.

Don’t Stop Moving by S Club 7
Keep on Movin’ by 5ive

(sensing a theme here)

PeaceJoySleep · 09/12/2022 10:20

I love pop music but that seems really basic. Like, often when you hear a song for the first time you know that the second time will be better, but this song is so basic that there's nothing more. I LOVE pop music, pink, taylor swift, dua lipa, katy perry, love a good pop song!

Beezknees · 09/12/2022 10:20

Sweet Melody by Little Mix for me. They were great.

PeaceJoySleep · 09/12/2022 10:21

I like something kind of oooh! though
