My husband is absolutely convinced that your average person in the Uk will not have heard of the band Crowded House. This is entirely based on the fact he can only name one song by them. Despite me listening to them on a weekly basis during 16 years I’ve been with him…
I’m equally convinced he’s wrong but I do have to admit I grew up in New Zealand and didn’t move back to the Uk until 1998 so probably fairly biased. I’m willing to concede they probably weren’t that popular here and I don’t think they had many big hits but I refuse to believe they were as unknown as he claims.
So who’s right?

Love them! I can name a multitude of songs.

Squeezedsquash · 07/12/2022 20:31

It felt like all the student bands at uni wanted to be Crowded House, so my first impressions of their music is other people singing them. There was a NZer in amongst the crowd, so they may have been early adopters.

Eixample · 07/12/2022 20:32

They were definitely on Top of the Pops more than once. You often hear their music on film/tv soundtracks even now

MasterBeth · 07/12/2022 20:32

Who on Earth has "a Spotify playlist"? Don't you have hundreds?

1dontunderstand · 07/12/2022 20:33

Weather with you is a favourite song of mine

BertieBotts · 07/12/2022 20:34

They are one of my favourite bands. I'm 34.

weegiemum · 07/12/2022 20:34

I'm 51, live in the uk and have seen them live.

BertieBotts · 07/12/2022 20:34

And yes, I probably know them through my parents.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 07/12/2022 20:35

Yes, very well-known!

WatchoRulo · 07/12/2022 20:35

I've been aware of their work for a long while - pretty sure Neil Finn lived in the UK for a while.
Not as obscure as Bic Runga or Strawpeople who I also love (saw Bic in Bristol once).
I am a brit but have been to NZ a couple of times.

rosemarysalter · 07/12/2022 20:35

Yes although they were big
In the 90s so younger generation may nof know

Avalovelace · 07/12/2022 20:40

Yep, loved them in the 90s. They released a greatest hits album back then with the strap line, “you don’t realise how many of their songs you know” or something. Also, there was a tribute act called Empty Flat.

lilybloom2 · 07/12/2022 20:40

Saw them live a few months ago

I love them

verdantverdure · 07/12/2022 20:43

My parents played Woodface on long car journeys and we all sang along and I used to sing snippets to the children when they were small. No NZ connections.

monkey42 · 07/12/2022 20:45

Like everyone said your DH is wrong. Early 90s UK v popular. I then went to NZ for a year in 1996 -even more popular. Came back to the uk then saw them in Hammersmith Apollo in 2010. I’m 53 and still love them.

woodhill · 07/12/2022 20:47

Nope neither of those you posted but my 33 year old husband started singing along haha

Famousinlove · 07/12/2022 20:56

I'm 30 and know who they are, only heard a couple of their songs though

JulesJules · 07/12/2022 21:22

I love Crowded House, have many albums and have seen them live (so brilliant live) multiple times.

NoraEphronsNeck · 07/12/2022 21:26

youcantry · 07/12/2022 21:33

Hesma · 07/12/2022 21:57

Love them… reminds me of my uni days and many parties with someone strumming a guitar and us all singing along

Mittens1717 · 07/12/2022 22:05

My friend was a big fan back in the 90s, so I remember a lot of their songs, Fall at your feet is gorgeous, also love Distant sun, also I'm Irish and one of the band bought a house about a mile down the road from me a few years back!
