AIBU to ask mumsnet to settle an argument about Crowded House?

My husband is absolutely convinced that your average person in the Uk will not have heard of the band Crowded House. This is entirely based on the fact he can only name one song by them. Despite me listening to them on a weekly basis during 16 years I’ve been with him…
I’m equally convinced he’s wrong but I do have to admit I grew up in New Zealand and didn’t move back to the Uk until 1998 so probably fairly biased. I’m willing to concede they probably weren’t that popular here and I don’t think they had many big hits but I refuse to believe they were as unknown as he claims.
So who’s right?

vix3rd · 08/12/2022 07:56

crowded house were in the UK charts in the 90's so I think he's talking out of his bum

JoyfulGirl · 08/12/2022 07:58

Probably depends on age, but I’m 40 and would be shocked if someone my age didn’t know them.

CoffeeBoy · 08/12/2022 07:58

Mid 40s, I know of them, had an album, can name a couple of songs. Know they were from NZ and had 2 brothers (?) in the band.

Funkyslippers · 08/12/2022 08:03

One of my all-time favourite bands. Have loved them since the Woodface album. My OH knows of them but could probably only name a couple of their songs even though I've played them many times over the years

Funkyslippers · 08/12/2022 08:04

CoffeeBoy Tim Finn joined his brother Neil just for the album Woodface

stuffnthings · 08/12/2022 08:04

Haven't read the thread, and probably has been mentioned, but they played to a good crowd on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in June, so still very much popular.

Funkyslippers · 08/12/2022 08:05

NoAlexa that's Weather With You, not the song the PP mentioned

Thatiswild · 08/12/2022 08:06

I was completely obsessed as a teen in the UK and saw them live, still love their music.

Specksofwhiteallaround · 08/12/2022 08:12

@ingenvillvetavardukoptdintroja I don’t think it’s related to his age as he’s heard of them, he’s just vastly underestimated other peoples awareness of them. He just thinks they had maybe two songs played on the radio here and most people won’t have heard of them.

@isthismylifenow He’s taken it well and conceded that for once he got it wrong. Although he’s standing by his assertion that all their songs sound the same

@MargaretRiver I know! I had the special box set video of it, when I pointed that out his response was; "Yeah but I bet they were all from NZ and Aus." And to be fair he’s probably not wrong 🤔

I'm old and have never heard of them.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 08:14

I'm 52 and have certainly heard of them! I'd doubtless recognise the songs, if I heard them, but I can't name any.

Heavy metal, punk and blues fan here.

the80sweregreat · 08/12/2022 12:11

They are great

Tanith · 08/12/2022 12:17

Of course we’ve heard of them! The radio station used to stick “Weather With You” on every time the sun so much as peeped from behind the clouds.

I can remember when they were Split Endz 😊 (well, Neil was, anyway!)

autienotnaughty · 08/12/2022 12:42

I'd probably get through 3 in 10 with them.

HansSolo22 · 08/12/2022 12:46

I have and I think they're great! I'm 43 in case that makes a difference.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 13:22

Ah, Weather With You
I definitely know that one!

DailyMailReporterTellMeAllYourSecrets · 08/12/2022 13:27

I can only think of one of their songs but I’ve definitely heard of them.

funnelfanjo · 08/12/2022 13:44

Tim and Neil Finn have done some fabulous solo stuff on their own and together too. Disembodied Voices is one of my favourites, such an evocative song.

Pyjamageddon · 08/12/2022 13:49

Fall at your feet is one of my favourite songs! And of course Weather with you and Don't dream it's over. Can't recall any other titles but probably know more. Mid 40s.

PearlclutchersInc · 08/12/2022 13:50

They were quite popular in the 90s. One of my colleagues adored them.

Split Enz.....

FleasNavidad · 08/12/2022 13:50

Better be home soon is probably my favourite followed by Distant Sun.

They were massive here in the 90s, what's he on about? They played Glastonbury this year ffs

ReviewingTheSituation · 08/12/2022 13:53

Loved them. Great tunes for singing along to.... Altogether now, "Hey now, hey now, don't dreeeeeeeeeam it's over..."

I imagine their following is fairly niche in age though. Probably lacking the cut through to reach a non-Radio 1 audience at the time, and lacked the longevity to reach younger people now. I'm 48, and reckon I'm probably the sweet spot age-wise.

We were learning 4 Seasons in One Day at choir, and the vast majority of people had never heard of Crowded House (I'm probably the 3rd youngest in the whole choir, average age maybe late 60s...)

MumVUnicorns · 08/12/2022 13:58

I adore Crowded House...so much so, that when I backpacked in New Zealand, but of my itinerary was to go to Te Awamutu and do the Crowded House trail and see where it all started for the Finn Brothers...
