My husband is absolutely convinced that your average person in the Uk will not have heard of the band Crowded House. This is entirely based on the fact he can only name one song by them. Despite me listening to them on a weekly basis during 16 years I’ve been with him…
I’m equally convinced he’s wrong but I do have to admit I grew up in New Zealand and didn’t move back to the Uk until 1998 so probably fairly biased. I’m willing to concede they probably weren’t that popular here and I don’t think they had many big hits but I refuse to believe they were as unknown as he claims.
So who’s right?

One of those bands everybody will have heard a few songs by ("Don't Dream/Weather with You" being the two most likely contenders) but relatively few will own any albums bar perhaps the best of.

My absolute favourite band as a teenager and Together Alone is still my favourite album. Just a shame the last album was so unbelievably shit.

I love them! reminds me of great times at Uni in the late 90's

I love Crowded House and both Neil and Tim Finn's solo stuff. They are wonderful. I think Woodface was the most popular album as it had both of them and their beautiful close vocal harmony singing. I do think Woodface has some fairly poor tracks though. I prefer Temple of Low Men and Together Alone.

I saw them many times in the late 80's and 90's. The most memorable was at Wembley Arena when there was a power cut and everything was reduced to emergency back up. Neil just went to the piano and just started playing (and singing) "Message to my Girl" (a Split Enz track) while they waited for the power to come back. It was blissful. He could have carried on like that all evening as far as I was concerned.

My 15 year old son loves CH too. His favourites are "Private Universe" and "Distant Sun". I love way too many to name individually Smile DP is not so keen though.

Ninabean17 · 08/12/2022 16:05

I love Crowded House. I'm 33 and grew up listening to them

Floralnomad · 08/12/2022 16:10

I’m mid 50s and have some of their music and our daughter is 23 and she’s heard of them and could name a few songs .

I agree that most people over 30 will have heard of them. However, I think you've skewed your results OP. Your thread title basically invites people who've heard of them in, however anyone who's never heard of them isn't going to think they can settle an arguments on them so will likely pass the thread by.

Hey now hey now, don't dream it's over - like that song but couldn't name any others! I think most people over 35 have heard of them

Watsername · 08/12/2022 17:44

Recurring Dream is one of my favourite albums.

Specksofwhiteallaround · 08/12/2022 18:35

@fdgdfgdfgdfg I get what your saying. There’s been a few happy to say they’ve never heard of them but of course your right and people who have were always going to be more likely to reply. I’m kind of seeing it more as reassurance that he’s not totally right about no one having heard of them.

Well I thought this was a thread about an overcrowded house Blush

So that should tell you

Carlycat · 08/12/2022 20:21

Love them. Got loads of their music

I8toys · 08/12/2022 20:38

Loved them. Was at Uni in the 1990's and played Woodface on repeat, along with Nirvana. 🤘

TankFlyBossW4lk · 19/12/2022 08:15

I've heard of them, went to a concert in Wembley in 2007.

MardyMincepie · 19/12/2022 08:49

I remember DH and I used to duet Crowded House when drunk back in the 1990’s when we were still students.
