My husband is absolutely convinced that your average person in the Uk will not have heard of the band Crowded House. This is entirely based on the fact he can only name one song by them. Despite me listening to them on a weekly basis during 16 years I’ve been with him…
I’m equally convinced he’s wrong but I do have to admit I grew up in New Zealand and didn’t move back to the Uk until 1998 so probably fairly biased. I’m willing to concede they probably weren’t that popular here and I don’t think they had many big hits but I refuse to believe they were as unknown as he claims.
So who’s right?

I do...but id say those under 40 won't

They absolutely will if their parents were fans though!

AtomicBlondeRose · 07/12/2022 19:09

Not only have I heard of them, I immediate thought of this old advert … “you know more Crowded House songs than you think you do”!

RedLem0nade · 07/12/2022 19:09

Loved them. I’m 40 and Irish if that’s of any relevance. I reckon most of my peers would at least recall their name. I’m going to listen to their album now. Thanks for the reminder!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 07/12/2022 19:09

Of course

LunaTheCat · 07/12/2022 19:09

Love them too.. have been to a concert (but I am a kiwi so slightly biased 😉)

RandomPerson42 · 07/12/2022 19:11

I’ve heard of them but could not name a single song - not one of my genres of music. But… I detest the radio so also couldn’t tell you anything about todays current pop stars e.g. I could not name an Ed Sheeran song either.

OoooohMatron · 07/12/2022 19:11

I've heard of them. What my husband would describe as middle of the road music, but I quite like them.

Their "Best Of" had a tv ad that said "you know more Crowded House songs than you think!" then proceeding to play Weather With You etc (the etc indicates I can't think of any more off the top of my head, except Distant Sun, which is brill).

I came on to say this! I bought the Recurring Dream album as a mid-teen based on that advert!

I think Pineapple Head is my favourite, but Ilike lots of their other songs too. Their harmonies are just so singable!

Manchmal · 07/12/2022 19:11

Yes. And what’s more I remember the cds for Together Alone (1993 album) being heavily promoted in record shops and the like.

IntentionalError · 07/12/2022 19:11

Anyone over 40 will definitely know Crowded House. The band were very popular in the U.K. in the late 80s & early 90s. Their albums were best sellers and their best known songs were a fixture on mainstream radio channels, and are still widely played now.

Hopemax · 07/12/2022 19:12

I'm 40 and first remember listening to a CH CD owned by my friends mum when we will have been about 14, so in 1996 ish? Loved them ever since & would think I'd be at the low end of the age scale of their fans.

Trustmeimadoctor · 07/12/2022 19:12

I’d imagine most people 40+ would know of them. They had a lot of hits!

AuntieMarys · 07/12/2022 19:12

They played a good set at Glastonbury this year

miltonj · 07/12/2022 19:13

Ariana grande did a cover of don't dream it's over for the Manchester one love concert after the attack so a lot of younger people will know CH through that.
I also love fall at your feet, one of my fave songs. Busted of all people do a cover of it too!

SE13Mummy · 07/12/2022 19:13

I'm 45 and went to see them in Brighton as a sixth former. My 18-yr-old knows who they are too.

TellMeWhere · 07/12/2022 19:14

Heard of, recognize their songs but I wouldn't be able to tie the two together

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/12/2022 19:15

I own the 'Woodface' album - I'm in my late 40s and my early 60s DH 'knows of them'. They were massive in the early 90s.

DepIndoChridmadWidMe · 07/12/2022 19:15

My first thought was "Jump Around." Oops.
Turns out I've never heard of Crowded House.

Auntiepaella · 07/12/2022 19:15

I first knew their name through I’m Alan Partridge… although prior to that
I had been vaguely aware of their song about taking the weather with you.

JanglyBeads · 07/12/2022 19:15

Oh my goodness I need to get my CDs out! Thanks for the reminder.

I love them but must admit I was introduced by a BF who'd spent part of his childhood in NZ.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/12/2022 19:15

They were on the radio almost constantly.

What was he listening to at the time instead to have missed them? This is Aceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed snd Wicked, Wicked, Junglist Massive?

Honeybirds87 · 07/12/2022 19:16

I'm 32, I know of them because my mum made us listen to them in the car when we were young. Hated it at the time and I was desperate to listen to pop music but I might have a look on Spotify later

ditalini · 07/12/2022 19:16

Hey, don't look now
But there goes God
In his sexy pants and his sausage dog
And he can't stand Beelzebub
'Cause he looks so good in black

So. Good 😄

Igneococcus · 07/12/2022 19:16

My in laws live in the town where the Finn brothers grew up, but I knew Crowded House before I first set foot in NZ. I saw them opening for R.E.M in Auckland either in 1994 or early 1995.

VinoDino · 07/12/2022 19:16

NotSorry · 07/12/2022 19:06

yep, love them - Neil Finn played with Fleetwood Mac when I saw them in 2019 - he was brilliant

I saw this too!
